I've been searching for an ancestor, Minnie (Mary) Simington whose married name was Newell. She was born in MA about 1855. On Ancestry.com in the 1920 Census I found her name (not yet sure if it is the one I'm looking for) in Yonkers Ward 1 Westchester NY along with about 20 or so other people. She was listed as an 'inmate'. As I looked at the other people most were listed as 'inmates' however, there were small children some as young as 4 years old also listed as an inmate. Some of them didn't seem to be connected to an adult and others appeared to be whole families, mother and father and children. I was wondering if anyone has come upon this and can tell me more about it. Was it a prison? A Jail? Were the children the ones in trouble? I would love to know about this from anyone who has some answers. Thanks so much! A Message for you from JUDY!
Judy: Just reviewed the census image. Minnie is a teacher in an Orphans home. Possibly live in so listed as inmate. This Minnie born NY in 1868.
