(VIII) Asa Hammond WHITNEY, son of Asa WHITNEY (VII) was born in Boston on June 17, 1819. He married onOct. 3, 1842 to Laura Leffingwell HENSHAW, who was born June 23, 1820 at Warren, Ohio and died April 20, 1886. He prepared for college in Boston schools and was graduated at Harvard College in 1838. After leaving college he made a voyage to the Mediterranean for his health and subsequently went to Rio de Janiero. On his return he became the junior partner of the firm of HENSHAW & WHITNEY, wholesale druggists of Boston. He resided in Cambridge. Later he became interested in railroad business and removed to Norfolk, Virginia, where he managed the financial afairs of the Seaboard & Roanoke Company, as its treasurer. He was a man of great energy and earnestness of character. He resided late in life at Vicksburg, Mississippi where he died, Oct 7, 1858. His children were: #1 Laura L. WHITNEY born June 15, 1843, died Jan. 24, 1870 #2 Anna Henshaw WHITNEY, see forward #3 Richard Sullivan WHITNEY born June 19, 1846, died Aug. 23, 1847 #4 Catherine Dean WHITNEY born June 17, 1849 and married Robert George LAWTON, of Hudson, NY, on the English frigate " Narcissus", off Havana, Cuba on May 31, 1871. He was born Aug. 12, 1839 and died Dec. 2, 1904. He was a resident of Havana and member of the banking firm of LAWTON Brothers. Their children were: (4a) Robert Henshaw LAWTON, born in Havana on April 3, 1872 and died at Lacaster, Mass. on Dec. 10, 1881 (4b) Sydney Allen LAWTON born at Lancaster on Nov. 2, 1873. He is a graduate of Harvard Univ., 1895, now with the firm of WRENN Brothers, brokers of NY City. He married on June 29, 1901 to Harriet Sheldon LAWTON of Hudson, NY, and they reside at Rye, NY and have 2 children, Sarah born Oct. 19, 1902 and Katherine born Oct.14, 1904 (4c) Ethel Whitney LAWTON born Lancaster on Oct. 4, 1875 and married Chester PARKER of S. Lancaster, Mass. at NewYork City on Oct. 5, 1899 and reside in Lancaster, and they have 3 children: (4c1) Chester PARKER, Jr. born Sept. 29, 1900 (4c2) Felton PARKER born Jan. 14, 1902, died March 21, 1902 (4c3) Lydia PARKER born Nov. 4, 1903. (d) Richard Henshaw LAWTON born in Lancaster on March 23, 1888, resides in Rye, NY. #5 Hammond Moore WHITNEY born at Norfolk, Virginia on June 28, 1851 and resides in Brookline, Mass. He married at Boston on Nov. 13, 1879 to Catherine Howard REED and their children are: (5a) Catherine born at Longwood, Brookline, Mass. on Sept. 28, 1881 and married on Sept. 30, 1903 to Theodore W.
