I was looking at the Library of Congress' American Memory map site, specifcially at a panoramic map of Webster in 1892, when I saw an inset illustration of the A. J. Bates Shoe Factory, as well as A. J. Bates' summer home and his cottage. I have done some search to determine just who A. J. Bates was, as I have a Bates line that is scattered throughout Worcester County, but I haven't been able to find anything on him, yet. Anyone know who A. J. was? Gary
