There is much written about John Oliver and his large family in the Athol history books. John died in 1811 and the following was written about him in 1940. "At Christmas time in 1811 there was an accumulation of snow of such depth that it was 8 days after Capt. John Oliver died at his home on Lyons Hill before his body could be transported to the Old Pleasant Street Cemetery where it was buried near the entrance gate." He was close to 88 years old when he died; nearly blind and aided by a cane when he walked, local children were very fond of him and referred to him as "Old Dap". Children of John and Mary Aaron, born 1748 Jemima, born 1751 Moses, born 1753 Rachel, born 1755 Hannah, born 1758 Tirzah, born 1760 Mary, born 1762 Anne Durham, born 1764 John, Jr., born 1766 Rachel (2nd), born 1770 Elizabeth, born 1773 These children had many, many descendants as you can imagine. Many of them remained in Athol and many descendants removed to other parts of the United States. An article on Captain John Oliver written by William Lord in 1935, reads as follows: "He was a native of Ireland who came here as a pioneer in 1736 settling east of Petersham Rd and northeast of the golf course which is now there. At the time of the Burgoyne alarm in 1777 he went out from here as Captain of the third company to be sent from here on that campaign. In 1786 he joined with Captain Shay in his ill-fated campaign against the Courts of the State". Dr. James Oliver, Grandson of Capt. John Oliver, Practicing Physician for 50 years in Athol (including Civil War physician) and wrote book entitled Ancestry, Early Life and War Record of James Oliver, MD Born in 1836, died in 1918. Children of Lt. William Oliver (son of William 1) and Anna Forbes (married December 30, 1767 in Barre, Worcester county, Mass. ) Jenny, born 1769, died September 3, 1777. Forbes, born December 2, 1770 James, born 1773, d. September 13, 1777. * William Tertius, born 1775 Anna, born 1778 ** James, born 1780 William, Jr. was listed as a Selectman of Athol for the years 1763-1769 and was instrumental in establishng that town. He died between 1780 and 1783 and his widow Anna is referred to several times in William Sr.'s Will. He refers to her as his "daughter", which was often used as a term in those days for daughter-in-law. It is obvious that William, Sr. was quite fond of her and even left her his house. William, Jr. also fought in the Revolutionary War and was often referred to as Lt. for many years after. * William Tertius Oliver (above) married Susannah Lilley in 1802, Barre, Mass. They had the following children: Lydia, born June 17, 1802, Twins: Willard and William b. February 8, 1804, John, born January 18, 1806, Anna, born May 28, 1808 and Julian, born August 25, 1810. ** James Oliver (above) married Sarah Lilley on April 7, 1806 in Barre, Mass. They had the following children: Forbes, born May 20, 1806, Eliza Walker, born August 12, 1807, David Lilley, born June 26, 1809, Lyman, born Deptember 26, 1810, Harriet Adams, born October 2, 1812, Susan, born February 14, 1815, Submit Lilley, born January 21, 1817, Lydia Lilley, born January 11, 1819, Sarah Caldwell, born September 15, 1820 and Martha Jane, born December 3, 1822. (Middle names were important to these generations, and here once again, the name of "Caldwell" appears, used as a middle name for Sarah, showing a connection to the Caldwell family spoken of previously). Children of Isabella Oliver and James Caldwell Sarah, born 1754, married Reverend Josiah Dana James, born 1756 Anna, born 1758 William, born 1760 Submit, born 1763 James Caldwell was the son of William Caldwell and Sarah Morrison, who were closely related to the Olivers through several different marriages. After James Caldwell died about 1763, Isabella married Nathaniel Jennison in 1769. As mentioned previously Isabella died before 1786 as her children are given legacies in William Oliver's Will. Children of Elizabeth Oliver and Hugh Holland Oliver, born 1752 Ruben, born 1754 Sarah, born 1756 child, born 1759 Anna, born 1762 The Hollands did not die in Athol, as no records can be found in either Athol or Pelham for any Holland deaths. The unnamed child above was born in Pelham, MA, so it is assumed that this family moved to Pelham and then elsewhere. There are several Pelham marriages for a Holland family between the years of 1781 and 1801, obviously descendants of Elizabeth & Hugh. _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~celeste/firstgen1.htm_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~celeste/firstgen1.htm)
