I have a copy of an 1870 map of Uxbridge, that I obtained at the Cornet John Farnum House a few years ago. It shows the names of the people who lived in Uxbridge, and also a list of businesses. Alison, There are similar 1866 maps for the towns in Tompkins Co, NY, which have been scanned by Bill Hecht, and are available on line at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~springport/pictures161/1866tompkins.html Two of us are transcribing all the name and businesses and putting them on line too. The way I do it is to open up a scanned map in Adobe Photoshop Elements, and then I open an Excel spreadsheet, and put them side by side on my computer screen, and "type" the names from the map into the spreadsheet, by map section number. I can enlarge part of the map to make it easier to use. If I can not read a name, I try to find it in a book I have, "Landmarks of Tompkins County", by Selkirk, 1894. If not, then I use the search engine on the Tompkins County GenWeb site, and I can usually find them there. This work will be placed there soon.
