In 1852, when Worcester was a city of 18,000 population, the citizens decided that there was a need for a Young Men's Christian Association in the city. After careful planning, an organization was effected and the second YMCA to be formed in the United States was the one to be located in Worcester. This organization continued for a period, and then resolved itself into the Young Men's Library Association from which sprang our Free Public Library. In 1864 a determined effort was made to re-establish the YMCA which resulted in success. It was incorporated in 1869. In 1868 there were 511 members. In 1933 there were 5,384 members.
