    1. [MAWORCES] (no subject)
    2. The following was written by Tim Sullivan, CEO of The Generations Network, Inc. and is posted here at the RootsWeb blog: _http://bigfile.rootsweb.com/newsroom/?p=111_ (http://bigfile.rootsweb.com/newsroom/?p=111) this came to me from our Web-Master.Patrice of. Fl. As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world's oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow. As part of this goal, we have decided to "transplant" RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www. rootsweb.com to www. rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing. The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa. Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future. All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to <mailto:feedback@rootsweb.com> feedback@rootsweb.com. 3. Dick; I think that you mean WWII since radar was not developed until then. During WWII Whitin Machine Works in Whitinsville did radar work. I have a tape from my Grandfather where he described that Whitin Machine Works shifted from making textile machinery to military use - including radar. He stated that folks were bused in from Worcester to add more labor. Sorry that I don't have more information, but I hope this helps. 2. Hi Dick, I checked with my husband, Ralph, who has worked on radars and still has some of those old ones. He has many books regarding them. He suggested that it might be Western Electric who made most of the early units. The other suggestion was ARC (Aircraft Radio Corp) who started out on the east coast, just outside of Worcester, and were later bought out by Cessna and moved to Wichita, Ks. (The old radar units that he is looking at in his shop right now were manufactured by Western Electric.) Some early radar parts were manufactured under J.A.N. (Joint Army Navy) endeavors, He said he didn't think that Raytheon got into that field until late in the war. Hope this helps and gives you a starting place in your search. 3. Here's more info from my husband Daniel on radar manufacturers in MA during WWII. "I think your company in Massachusetts is in fact Raytheon. The following link, associated with that which you had sent before, is much more illuminating regarding their involvement in Radar. I doubt others existed in the area or if they did, almost certain would have been a spin-out of Raytheon directly as MIT professors were also engaged in their business" http://www.raytheon.com/about/history/leadership/index.html Sandy Sandra Lee Blakley 336 South 30th St. Philomath, OR 97370 541-929-2259 --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Not all 100 percent complete because this is beta to help them debug any problems. You can help them. I found one bug and reported it. Images were not linked to Utah death certificates when they are supposed to be. 1. [MAWORCES] Vacuum Tube Manufacturer
    2. Sandy Blakley
    3. Could this be your answer? Sylvania With roots in Massachusetts in 1901, the lamp and vacuum tube manufacturer adopted the name Sylvania Electric Products, Inc., in 1942 and merged with General Telephone to form GTE Sylvania in 1959. The Semiconductor Division based in Woburn, MA developed high frequency transistors and introduced the first commercial TTL family in 1963. This doesn't say where they were making the tubes in MA, but Sylvania was definitely one of the 5 leading US manufacturers of tubes--others were RCA, GE, IMAC, etc. My husband tells me that during WWII there were other small companies around the country who operated as a joint venture with the military to fill the need and tubes made were issued a JAN # (Joint Army Navy). You might possibly check with a local museum there or research librarian. 1. Re: [MAWORCES] Problems ?
    2. Iain McNeill
    3. Hi Susan Well spoken. I have steadfastly not put family tree details on websites OR signed up to anything Ancestry or Ancestry-related. They are obviously now in such a strong position that they think they can openly dictate to the genealogy community, for pots of money for their shareholders or else............................. Happening all over the world too. I recently noticed they run the South African Family tree site. I think they should be stopped. Do families not have the right to demand their ancestors details be removed from their sites, or at least, not used for commercial purposes. The other thing it begets is INACCURACY. Who cares if the infromation is even vaguely correct as long as people will buy it. That is already a problem with some who will accept whatever they are told, provided it fits their preconcieved ideas. Someone should start a list of "genuine" sites, as well as simply commercial ones like Ancestry and their associated enterprises.
