    1. [MAWORCES] Railroad Accidents
    2. Starting in 1910 the Interstate Commerce Commission required railroads to report accidents, which the ICC then investigated. The ICC was abolished in 1994 and some functions were transferred to the Department of Transportation (DOT). Reports of investigations from 1911-1993 are on the DOT site at _http://dotlibrary1.specialcollection.net/scripts/ws.dll?toc&ds=0_ (http://dotlibrary1.specialcollection.net/scripts/ws.dll?toc&ds=0) . Click on the year, then on the name of the railroad. The ones I've looked at don't have people's names, but are good descriptions of what happened. Local newspapers are often the best source of info on railroad accidents. For example, digitized copies of many years of the Fitchburg [MA] Sentinel are on Ancestry.com. I've found that when searching these Ancestry newspaper databases, you get better results if you do not put the person's name where it asks for the name, but instead put the name in quotation marks in the Keyword box. 3. Hi Liz, Because of my interest in the history of Billerica, MA, I know about a place in the town which is called, "Iron Horse Park." It started out around the mid-1800's being the "Repair Shops" for the B&M Railroad. I recently read on one of the NH Lists that there might have been RR "Repair Shops" in Manchester, NH. Fitchburg is not that far from Billerica, but there might have been "Repair Shops" there, also. Maybe 5 years ago I found out there is a "Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society," and it has an office in Lowell, MA. (I believe the office is in one of the buildings of the "Lowell National Historical Park.) Perhaps the volunteers there have a record of "train accidents" and "railroad-yard accidents" in New England. One reminder is that sometimes a person is killed or seriously injured because of being on the "tracks" when I train is approaching - whether on purpose or by accident or by "don't know why I did it." (We just had a news report this summer about 2 girls in New England who decided to take a nap on some RR tracks. If I remember the story correctly, the tracks were on a bridge, and they had no easy way to wake up and escape the train.) And, I'd like to know whether you contacted the Fitchburg Library. If you sent them a slow-mail letter, the Reference Dept. probably would try to find the article for you. http://www.fitchburgpubliclibrary.org/about/contactus.htm Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: My great-grandmother and her 4 siblings all arrived in Nova Scotia ~1875 as "British Home Children." She and her 2 sisters married in Truro, NS, between 1879 and 1882. Her sister who remained in Truro married a Charles McNUTT and they had 10 children. Unfortunately, a couple of years after the 10th was born, Charles was killed "in a railroad-yard accident." A helpful researcher in NS told me about it several years ago. I don't remember the details, but he was a worker in the Yard. There was a very large -container- hanging above where the train cars would sit, and it accidentally tipped over, dumping the contents on top of Charles. He was killed instantly. (Sorry I'm not a train person so I don't know the technical words to use.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "elizabeth burke" <lizburke48@hotmail.com> To: "massachusetts genealogy" <genmassachusetts-l@rootsweb.com>; "MAWORCES-L@rootsweb.com" <maworces-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 25, 2008 11:40 PM Subject: [MAWORCES] Railroad accident Hello Listers, I am searching for a newspaper article about an accident that took place sometime between 1904 and 1915, I believe. My great Aunt Mary Burke married Alan Cameron in 1904. In 1915 Alan Cameron died of appendicitis in Fitchburg (Fitchburg Sentinel, June 14, 1915) and the article states that he lost both his legs "some years ago" while employed as a clerk in the B (?) and M East yard. Boston and Maine Railroad? I have been searching Fitchburg Sentinel on Ancestry but no luck so far. Do you think there is good site of railway accidents that is easily searched? Thanks for any help. 2. Vital Records Project
    3. Dan, The record is in Vol. 214, page 143. Walter was born in Worcester, but the birth is recorded in the Swansey records. There is an asterisk after the town's name in his record. No informtion on the page about the asterisk. It could be just that he was not born in Swansey. His parents' residence was Swansey. His father was a carpenter and was born in Arm??gh Ireland Eu. His mother was born in Rehoboth. I can put this image online for you to download. It is a MrSid image and requires a plugin to view it. It can be viewed locally once downloaded.
