Bob, According to his marriage record, his parents were Cyrus and Rose Crooker (no maiden given) and he was born in Poland, ME(?). He was 22 at the time of his marriage. He was a farmer. Etta was 18. She was the daughter of Henry and Ellen L. Baker and was born in Fitchburg. They were married by Rev. F.H. Allen, Shrewsbury, Pastor Congregational Church Aug. 23, 1885. The recording of his death, as recorded in Shrewsbury and Worcester are essentially the same. The differences are that the Worcester record gives his middle initial as "H." and his occupation as farmer rather than stage driver. However, the item of contention, his age, is identical. You'll need to check with the clerk in Poland. Also, you could post a query for Androscoggin County. You can find a link at the bottom of the page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~susan/ Good luck. Hi: I need a proof-reader for my transcriiption(s) which I do for the USGenWeb Project. Currently, I am working on 1930 census for Springfield, Hampden County. A proof-reader would need access to the Census records (Ancestry or Heritage Quest). Please let me know if you can help out! Thanks. Ruth Hakala tis_herself@cox.net or herself1224@yahoo.com
Dear List Members: I'm seeking information on the birth date, place and parentage of Alvah W. Crooker who died on July 2, 1897, following an accident that occurred while he was driving the stage coach across the Lake Quinsigamond causeway between Worcester and Shrewsbury. According to a story appearing in the Worcester Daily Spy on Saturday, July 3, 1897 he died the previous evening at the City Hospital from injuries received Monday by being struck in the head by a block and pulley attached to a rope which the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. had strung across the Shrewsbury road near the lake. As a result of being hit by the block and pulley he was thrown from the stage and never regained consciousness. He was married to Etta L. Baker. At the time of Alvah's death, he and his wife were residents of Shrewsbury and they had 4 children. His death certificate recites his age as 32 years, 2 months and 26 days (measured from July 2, 1897) which according to my calculation would mean he was born circa April 6, (or 7,) 1865. His gravestone in the Mountain View Cemetery shows a birth year of 1863. If anyone can furnish additional information on his date and place of birth, as well as the names of his parents, plus the significance of the middle initial "W," (no presidential puns, please) I would be appreciative. Regards, Bob Bartlett

When reviewing early Town and vital records for New Braintree, I came across two entries worded similarly to the following: "To the Town Clerk of New Braintree: I hereby certify and give notice that on the (date) I took into my family to reside a young woman named (name), daughter of (name), from the Town of (name), State of Vermont. (Signed) (Dated) (Attested by Town Clerk)" Has anyone else ever seen similar entries in other towns? What does it mean? Why was it done? One notice was dated Jan. 1791 and the other Jan. 1793. Thanks. Katherine
Good evening, Katherine. :-) This was similar to our current laws regarding immigration from foreign countries. Basically, we don't want people coming to America and becoming a welfare case. In those days, towns took care of their own. If a stranger came to town, they had to be vouched for by a resident. That resident would also have to guarantee that the person would not become a burden on the town. This could come in the form of lodging and/or putting up a bond. Anyone who allowed a stranger to come into their home, had to report it. I don't know if there was a minimum time limit. Should a person, not of the town, need aid, it was common for the town to actually bill the person's home town. At the same time, the town constable would show up at where ever the person was staying and officially warn them out of town. Warnings out were very common. Here is an example: In the records of the town of Alstead, New Hampshire, is found this:-- State of New Hampshire, Cheshire ss. to Saml. Kidder one of the Constables of Alstead, Greeting: In the name of the Government & people of said state you are hereby Required forthwith to warn Jacob Benton & Hannah his wife, Mabel, Jacob, Reynold, Mary & Samuel Benton, thier chil- dren to Depart out of this Town Immediately & no longer make it the place of their Residence under the pains that will follow. Hereof fail not & make Return of this warrant with your doings thereon as soon as may be. Given under our hands and seal of office this 26th March 1783. [Three signatures of Selectmen] April 7, 1783 Servd. this warrant by reading the same in the hearing of sd persons. Saml. Kidder, Const. There is a book available from Higginson Books titled "Warning Out in New England." It makes for very interesting reading. I have a copy and wiil, if I every have time, transcribe it and put it online. It will make a wonderful adjunct to the vital records project. I can't answer the question directly, but I do recall a few years ago working with a book in the Worcester Public Library that contained a great deal of information on the business lives of many Worcester area photographers from the 1800s onward. I don't recall the name of the book, but it should be known to the librarian on the third floor near the genealogy department. Greetings I'm new to this list and I'm trying to find the official name of the cemetery in the churchyard behind the church in the center of the village of New Braintree. At least one of my ancestors is buried in the churchyard, Elijah Norton, d. 6 Nov 1815. Thanks Marilynn Wright

I've "rescued" an old photograph of George CHASE of Elgin, Illinois. The photograph does not indicate where the photograph was taken of the name of the photographer. I would guess that it was taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with Mr. CHASE appearing to be in his 40's or 50's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research and thanks to the assistance of a CHASE Family Researcher I was able to gather the following information regarding George CHASE and his family: George CHASE was born in 1849 at Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts, son of George & Anne C. CHASE. He moved to Elgin, Kane, Illinois before 1880 and worked as a plate fitter at the Elgin Watch factory. He married Belle BASHFORD (born 1861 in Iowa) on November 29, 1882. She also worked at the watch factory. In 1880 he was staying with Thomas Bird WHEELOCK and his wife Ada Edith SCARSBRICK. Isabelle W. CHASE, his sister, married Russell A. WHEELOCK and had a daughter, Edna WHEELOCK born in 1878. Both of the WHEELOCK brothers also worked at the watch factory. I could find no record of any children by George and Belle CHASE. Census records provide the following information: 1850 census of Leominster, MA Name: George S Chase Age: 1 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849 Birth Place: Massachusetts Gender: Male Home in 1850(City,County,State): Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts Household Members: Name Age George H Chase 22 Ann O Chase 20 George S Chase 1 ================================== 1860 United States Federal Census Name: George S Chase Age in 1860: 11 Birth Year: abt 1849 Birthplace: Massachusetts Home in 1860: Lowell Ward 5, Middlesex, Massachusetts Gender: Male Post Office: Lowell Value of real estate: View Image Household Members: Name Age Geo H Chase 32 Ann C Chase 30 George S Chase 11 Edgar Chase 8 Isabell W Chase 4 Frank Chase 2 ============================ 1870 United States Federal Census Name: George Chase Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851 Age in 1870: 19 Birthplace: Massachusetts Home in 1870: Lowell Ward 4, Middlesex, Massachusetts Race: White Gender: Male Value of real estate: View Image Post Office: Lowell Household Members: Name Age Olive Chase 54 George Chase 19 Annie O Badger 24 Lottie Chase 20 Melborne Prescott 25 Charles Griffen 26 Ada Tom 25 Nellie Badger 7 1880 census of Elgin, IL: Russell WHEELOCK, age 28, a Watch Factory Worker, born MA, parents born MA Isabelle WHEELOCK, wife, age 24, Keeping House, born MA, parents born MA Edna WHEELOCK, dau, age 2, born IL Thomas WHEELOCK, age 24, a Watch Factory Worker, born MA, parents born MA Ada WHEELOCK, wife, age 22, a Watch Factory Worker, born WI, parents born England George CHASE, brother-in-law, age 30, a Watch Factory Worker, born MA, parents born MA 1900 census of Elgin, IL: (boarding in the home of Augustine & Anna GUSTASOW) George S.
