    3. Dora--not related, but will try to muddle you a bit. Genes are funny things. If we were to listen to the anthropologists we'd have to accept that at one time tens of thousands of years ago all peoples had dark skin, hair and eyes. That being said the genes that transmit skin, hair and eye color--the darker hues are generally dominant while the lighter hues are recessive. Simply put, in any match up the off spring are more likely to exhibit through natural selection the characteristics of the dominant unless recessives match up. Genetics is far more complex than that, but this explanation is the easiest way to begin to understand. During the ice ages, populations which had migrated north--northern Europe, Scandinavia, and west into the British Isles etc. and caught by them underwent genetic mutations towards the lighter skin, hair & eye colors traditionally associated with those areas today. Much later on via invasions, conquests, occupations etc--just a couple of more recent history, the Romans, Huns, etc. the gene pool became more mixed--no longer was the blonde/red hair, blue/green eyes, and lily white skin of the northerners was diluted through intermarriage etc. as the migrants settled in. I understand that your question really is of a more recent nature than all of that and doesn't really answer the question you are asking as to attempt to pin-point the exact relative--you very well may not find that answer. Dora Smith wrote: > My great grandmother adn her mother had very dark skin and hair. The trait is found elsewhere among the descendants of William Raymond and Mercy Davis of a broad area of Worcester County, Massacusetts. My great grandmother was descended from William Raymond and Mercy Davis three times via a chain of first cousin marriages. Looking at family photos it further looks that as much as ancestors in Dorsetshire may possibly have had both dark skin and hair, and long faces, the long face came down the Raymond line, and the dark skin and hair came from the Davis line along with a distinctive but more ordinary looking face. One of the less inbred descendants of this set of marriages had Morgan eyes and eyebrows blended into the same look. > > I am dying of curiosity. Which line or lines really contributed the dark skin and hair? All lines in this part of my family tree are of English origin. Mitochondrial DNA is consistent with the notion that the dark skin and hair came straight down my maternal line from Anne the wife of Thomas King of Sudbury, but that isn't necessarily true. Particularly as teh face shape appears to be that which was typical of Dolar Davis's descendants, and he was from Kent, and of male line Saxon descent. Some of my Raymond relatives had a face typical of the Bishop clan. Could be partly that 19th century George Bishop clan hair, beard and sometimes glasses they had on. 1. [MAWORCES] Which of these old New England lines had dark skin and hair?
    2. Dora Smith
    3. My great grandmother adn her mother had very dark skin and hair. The Davis line were a clan of families that started out in Sudbury, which is in Middlesex County. It includes Hubbard and Rice, though those aren't the only families that fed it. 3. HI! >From the Windham County Transcript, published Danielson, CT Dated 6 Mar. 1862 Struck by Lightning.--Mr. Wm. Goddard of Petersham, while on his way to Hardwick with a loaded sleigh, last Monday, was struck by lightning and rendered insensible. On recovering his senses he found his horse, which was a very valuable one, dead in the road. Mr. Goddard received serious injuries, but is now recovering.--Barre Gazette. 27 Nov. 1862 - Counterfeit five dollar bills on the Southbridge Bank, of Southbridge, Mass., are in circulation in Providence. 19 Mar. 1863 - George Holmes of Southbridge was accidentally shot by Daniel Clifford of Worcester on Saturday, and was instantly killed. Clifford pulled the trigger of a pistol, supposing it to be unloaded. 26 Mar. 1863 - Counterfeit five hundred dollar bills on the Central Bank, Worcester, are in circulation, so the papers say. We hav'nt seen any of them. 4 June 1863 - A company of men over 45 years of age, called The Worcester State Guard, has been organized in Worcester, Mass. The legislature at its recent session authorized the formation of such companies. Any spelling errors are exactly the way it was spelled in the paper. 1. [MAWORCES] Clayton in Upton MA
    2. Robert Clayton
    3. The town of Upton was formed from parts of four contiguous towns in southern Worcester County, MA by charter from the governor on June 14, 1735. My earliest identified ancestor, Alexander Clayton, appears in Upton Vital records on 26 December, 1741 when his intentions to marry Miss Smith of Ranthumisic, Wrentham were published. Also in Upton vital records is the announcement of the birth of a child, Mary Clayton, b. August 26, 1744 to Alexander and Susanna Smith Clayton. I do not know whether Ruth and Susanna are one and the same. Some 23 years later, my ancestor, Jonathan "Claton" published his intention to marry "Susannah Wartkins" on 26 February 1767. According to the DAR Patriot Index, Jonathan was born ~1745, which suggests that he, too was a child of Alexander and Susanna. Subsequent entries in the Upton v.r list the birth of children to Jonathan and Susanna in 1767, 1769, and1771. In June 20, 1753, The governor of New Hamshire colony chartered a new town to be named Townshend west of the Connecticut River. Alexander Clayton was listed among the 69 partitioners. At the FINAL listing of proprietors on October 7, 1782, Alexander had been replaced by Jonathan who moved to Townshend between 1771 and 1776. It was there that Jonathan served in the army. Between 1776 and 1782, five more children were born to Jonathan and Susanna. ------------------------------- These are the bare bones of my knowledge of my Worcester County forebears. Other fragments are too poorly documented to include in my planned genealogy. Any suggestions from Massachusetts searchers would be appreciated. RobC Rob Clayton rhclayton@earthlink.ne

    2. Hello List, I am helping someone trace the family of Dominick O'Dowd and wondered if someone could do a few look ups for us? Mary (Henry) Sullivan died Worcester 1891, Dominick was her first husband. If someone could check on a date of death for her there might be an obituary on genealogybank.com. I'm trying to determine which of her children are still alive especially her daughters. Also there is a Peter O'Dowd who died May 26, 1905 Worcester. I suspect him to be Dominick's brother and am hoping his parents are listed on the death certificate. I can not find a marriage for him but he did have among other children, Ann O'Doud (note spelling) born 1855 in Hopkinton. I was hoping someone could do a look up to see if it states his wife Bridget's maiden name so I could look for a marriage using her name. Peter O'Dowd states he was naturalized so we are hoping he is Dominick's brother. Thank you for any assistance, The Other Cheryl **************New year...new news. 1. [MAWORCES] HARRY D. RAWSON of Des Moines, Iowa
    2. Lisa Lepore
    3. Hi Rawson researchers - If you belong to the Mendon list, you probably saw this, but I thought I should post it here as well. Debbie Clough Gerischer posts these bios to the Iowa mailing list and the Iowa genweb project. I have her permission to repost them to any list where others might have an interest in the subject. Her only request is that you keep the information free for all to use. Lisa llepore@comcast.net A Narrative History of The People of Iowa with SPECIAL TREATMENT OF THEIR CHIEF ENTERPRISES IN EDUCATION, RELIGION, VALOR, INDUSTRY, BUSINESS, ETC. by EDGAR RUBEY HARLAN, LL. B., A. M. Curator of the Historical, Memorial and Art Department of Iowa Volume IV THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Inc. Chicago and New York 1931 HARRY D. RAWSON is a native son of Des Moines and for over thirty years has practiced his profession as an architect. He is a member of a firm that in the individual and aggregate of attainments of its members and in the work accomplished of its members easily stands in the front ranks of architecture in the Middle West. Mr. Rawson was born at Des Moines, September 1, 1872, member of an old and well known family of this city. His parents were A. Y. and Mary (Scott) Rawson, both of whom were born at North Craftsbury, Vermont. A. Y. Rawson came to Iowa in the early 1850s and founded what has been known for many years as the Iowa Pipe and Tile Company. He was active in that business until his death. He was also a coal operator and in other lines of enterprise. He died in 1895 and his wife in 1900. They were members of the Plymouth Congregational Church and in politics the father was a Republican. There were four sons: Charles A., of Des Moines; J. Scott, in the insurance business at Des Moines; Hollis A., with the Iowa Pipe and Tile Company; and Harry D. Harry D. Rawson attended public schools in Des Moines, Grinnell College and was graduated in 1896 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For two years he had practical training with a firm of architects in Chicago and in 1898 started practice at Des Moines as member of the firm Hallett & Rawson. He has been in practice continuously, has had a number of different associates, and is now of the firm Proudfoot, Rawson, Powers and Thomas. His professional skill has been employed in a great variety of architectural work, but chiefly public buildings, including schools and office buildings. He was architect for the Polk County Courthouse, the Equitable Life Insurance Building, the Liberty Building and Valley National Bank Building at Des Moines and has handled a great deal of the work for the State Board of Education, including building groups at Ames, Iowa City and Cedar Falls. The Memorial Union, Home Economics and Dairy Buildings on the campus of the Iowa State College at Ames, the University Hospital and medical group at the State University at Iowa City. Mr. Rawson married, in 1902, Miss Louise Gilmore, who was reared in Des Moines, and was educated in that city and in Bradford Academy in Massachusetts. Her father, Charles Gilmore, was with the Rock Island Railway for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Rawson have two children: Charles Gilmore, who was educated in the Boston Institute of Technology and the School of Applied Fine Arts in Paris and is now practicing interior architecture in New York; and Mary Scott, wife of Richard R. Rollins, connected with the Bankers Trust Company of Des Moines. Mrs. Rawson is a member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. Mr. Rawson is a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, the Wakonda Country Club, Des Moines Club and the American Institute of Architects. Hi Michael - I can't help with the NEHGS, but the church would have been St. Mary of the Assumption http://www.stmarymilford.org/ There are only 2 catholic churches in Milford, and St. Mary is the oldest. the other one is Sacred Heart of Jesus. http://www.sacredheartmilford.org/index.php You might also be interested in this page on the church in Hopkinton - St. John the Evangelist http://stjohntheevangelisthopkinton.parishesonline.com/scripts/HostedSites/org.asp?p=18&ID=1005 They didn't have a resident Catholic priest until 1866. The page above also explains that most Hopkinton residents went to church in Milford before that date. Also, I just posted a biography of HARRY D. RAWSON to the Mendon MA list. Harry lived in Des Moines, Iowa, and the bio was posted to the Iowa list. I'll post it here. 3. Hi Marilyn, The "Tidbits" are an interesting feature of the list. Thanks for sharing. Have you ever run across the article of the murder of J.B. Girouard in the late 1800's, in an ice-house. Have tried to find out who his wife was, to see if there was a connection to our Girouard clan, but it doesn't seem to be in the info available on the Internet. 3. Hi Marilyn, Thank you for all your "history / genealogy work." This is an off-topic request. I'd just like to ask if you could keep an eye out for my John and Mary "Molly" DEXTER family, and their 3 daughters, one who died Age 2 and one who died Age 14, and the surviving daughter, Mrs. Clara YOUNG. (And a name, Daisy WATROUS.) I have become curious how the 14-year-old daughter died. (I know you already found a few newspaper articles about them. For others, they lived in Killingly, CT, during 1800's. Information on them is on the CT Lists. Thank you for your time. Happy New Year. 3. Hi! >From the Windham County Transcript published in Danielsonville, CT Issue of 11 June 1863 Webster.--We learn that on Thursday afternoon, last week, a young lady residing in Webster, Mass., named Ella Stockwell, aged sixteen years, attempted suicide by taking muriatic acid. On Tuesday afternoon she was alive and it was thought she might possibly recover. She refuses to give any reason for the rash act. It is said she struggled against the use of antidotes, and expressed her determination to destroy herself if she recovers from the present attempt at self-destruction. At last accounts she was speechless fromthe effects of the drug, the membrane of the throat and stomach being much inflamed. She has conducted herself strangely of late, one of her whims being to purchase and wear articles of mourning. Southbridge -- The temperance men of Southbridge, Mass., possess some of the Putnam pluck in fighting the Rum Demon, and they are determined that he shall be, and stay, squelched. The proprietor of the Edward's House has been prosecuted for vending the "critter," and in revenge he has shut up shop. The Southbridge Journal goes in strongly for law, order and temperance, and the editor thereof has been honored by the rummies in being hung in effigy. They doubtless since receive much aid and comfort from that source. Issue of 18 June 1863 Webster -- We learn that Miss Ella Stockwell, of Webster, who attempted to poison herself, has so far recovered as to leave her bed. The Webster Times in speaking of this affair says: "We are not aware how much reliance can be placed upon current reports; but if the half we hear is correct, its saddest and most cruel features yet remain unwritten. The girl's character and life are said to be faultless, but it would seem that her existence has been by unnatural causes made burdensome beyond her wish to endure." As the girl has so far remained silent concerning the pre-disposing cause, it is very likely that all surmises are wide of the true cause, and may be injurious to innocent persons.
