The reservoir is known as the Quabbin Reservoir. The towns flooded were Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott. If you query "Quabbin +history", it will return a number of sites with info on the reservoir. Here is just one: http://www.westfordcomp.com/quabbin/ Katherine ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marcia Payne" <etexgal@webtv.net> To: <MAWORCES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 8:57 AM Subject: [MAWORCES] Need some help, please > > Would someone enlighten me on the names of the towns that were flooded to > make way for the Lake and water reservoir for Boston, in the northern part > of Worcester County? Jan, The MA vital records, 1841-1910, don't quite agree with your records. The only record for Adolphus Shaw was the marriage to Cynthia. Adolphus Shaw m. Cynthia C. Chase on April 7, 1848 in Winchendon. He was 25 and a mechanic. She was 22. Both were single. The record does not give whether this was 1st or 2nd marriage. His parents were Joseph & Anna and her's were John & Eliza. (MA Archives, vol. 31, p. 253. There is a death record for Cynthia. Return of a Death for Cynthia C. Shaw - She d. Nov. 3, 1908 at the age of 81 y. 3 m. 19 d. in Worcester. The cause was chronic valvular disease of heart. She had this for years. Contributory was entero-colitis, which had lasted for 6 weeks. Signed by Charles D. Wheeler, MD, on Nov. 4, 1908. Cynthia's address was 1183 Main St. Worcester. She was a widow. Her husband was Adolphus P. Shaw. She was b. Danville, VT to Loren Chase, b. Danville, VT, and Eliza Bolton, b. Danville, VT. There was no informatn. The information came from "Home Records." She was buried in Worcester on Nov. 5, 1908. Geo. Sessions Sons Co. undertaker. (MA Archives, vol. 107, p. 92) There are way too many births to check them out without having more information. The only Emma Shaw was the daughter of Albert. There are no births of a Warren Shaw. I double-checked the records on Cynthia's parents. They are correct as I've given them above. Dear Listers, I have come across 6869 pages of related material concerning Mass.'s Civil War men. The volumes are divided up by Regiments first, then their related Companies follow. The reading is wicked, print is almost microscopic (but I enlarge) and it is hard to pass this opportunity up. I will continue with the North Brookfield men of course but I want to add more military as I gather anything relating to Worcester County. I can't pomise I'll ever be near the finish, but I sure will give it my best for as long as I can. Also these records are much more abbreviated and don't mention parentage, where living and etc.

The information that Marcia is putting up is all important. As she sends it to the list, it is archived and the archives are indexed by the search engines. But, I'd like to see it all laid out on the web. To that end I have offered Marcia a free sub-domain of the Vital Records Project. There are a couple problems. First, Marcia has WebTV and is somewhat limited with what she can do. Second, I'm just too darn busy with the project and another project to do the formatting. Is there anyone who can work with Marcia in creating the web pages and uploading? I have already talked with Marcia about this and she's willing if a way can be found. Jenny, Clara is using the free Massachusetts Archives Vital Records database, http://www.sec.state.ma.us/vitalrecordssearch/vitalRecordsSearch.aspx , to look for entries. I'm using the New England Historic Genealogical Society's website, www.newenglandancestors.org, to actually look at the digitized registration and sometimes individual death records. There is a subscription, $75 US, to view those databases, but they do have some free material. As this is your first foray into US research, I might suggest you checkout the NEHGS's "Programs & Events" and then view some of the free On-line presentations. There are a number of differences between US and Australia research with the prime one being our censuses. Yours were destroyed and most of ours, except the 1890, are still around. We do not have the big CD collections the Aussie's have for research, but Massachusetts actually has some of the best records in the US for research. The death record that Clara posted is: 1905 volume 43 pg 224 registration number 197 Dennis Sugure, Fitchburg, Mass, 51 Granite St, date of death June 1st, 1905, Residence same as place of death, age 42 years with no months or days give. He was married, born Ireland, father Thomas Sugrue also born Ireland. Mother Nora Reardon, born Ireland Dennis' occupation was laborer, informant was his wife. Cause of death was Pulmonary Tuberculois Burial was St. Bernard Cemetery on 3 June 1905. Undertaker was James J. Phelan at 156 Water St. I don't suggest you subscribe to the NEHGS database as most Massachusetts County Rootsweb lists have a number of people, like Clara, who willing do lookups. If you had more family to search here, it would make sense, but not with the little bit you have. This Dennis does not appear to be a match, but I've found some errors in Australian records when hunting for my Aussie cousins in the Melbourne area, with some different names to the parents. Best of luck in your search. Good Morning, Jenny from Australia sent the following message to the Clinton messageboard. I suggested she join the Worcester messageboard. I have found the marriage of Dennis Sugrue in the massachusetts vital records, if someone could check to see if this is the Dennis Sugrue she is looking for it would be appreciated. Parents Timonthy Sugrue and Margaret Teahen. If it turns out this is the right Dennis Sugrue, his death is listed in 1905. Thank you. Marriage, Dennis SUGRUE, Fitchburg, 1899, volume 490-266 Death, Dennis SUGRUE, Fitchburg, 1905, volume 43-224 I am new to researching in the US and would welcome any assistance.
