    1. Re: [MAWORCES] Shoe makers
    2. Vital Records Project
    3. Hi, Marcia. The leather would most likely have come from the family's own cattle that had been slaughtered for food. Quite a few shoes could be made from a single hide. At one time shoe maker's were like travelling salesmen. One difference is that they would stay with the family that was getting the shoes. They didn't have fixed sizes and each person would get several pairs of shoes made at one time. I don't remember when left and right shoes came to be, but there were no right or left shoe in colonial times. 1. [MAWORCES] A Narrow Escape - Electric Car accident @ Channing & Kendall - 1907
    2. Discovered this item that mentioned my great grandfather HERBERT J. RUSSELL and am hoping the other names in it might be of interest to this list. Worcester Daily Spy February 7, 1907 A NARROW ESCAPE An electric car dashes down Kendall Street and is completely demolished Its four occupants escape with slight injuries. The electric car on the Grant Square line of the Consolidated Street Hallway met with serious mishap at the corner of Oak Avenue and Kendall Street at about 8:25 oclock yesterday morning. The car left Grant Square on time at 8:20 A.M. and ran down Channing Street, stopping to take passengers. Just before reaching Catherine Street the brake, which was set tight, refused to check the car, which continued at a lively rate down Channing Street. It rounded the curve at the corner of Channing and Kendall Streets all right, but the steep grade on Kendall Street increased the momentum and the car bounded forward at a fearful rate of speed which could not be checked. The curve at the corner of Kendall and Oak Avenue is one of the sharpest on the line, and when the car reached this point the wheels left the tracks and the car continued across the street and sidewalk, bringing up very abruptly against an electric light pole and a maple tree opposite the residence of FRED S. DEARBORN, part of the car being on the lawn at his house. A large limb of the maple tree extended over the sidewalk, and the momentum of the car was such that this tore the roof of the car off, completely wrecking it. The left side of the car was smashed to kindling wood. There were four occupants of the car, A. M. S. BUTLER who lives at 20 Channing Street; HERBERT J. RUSSELL who lives at 20 Catharine Street; EVA and BERTHA MCKENNA, daughters of JOHN F. MCKENNA, of 10 Edward Street. MR. RUSSELL and MR. BUTLER perceived the danger as they rounded the Channing Street curve, and ran to the rear platform. They jumped just before the car reached the lower curve. MR. BUTLER fell and rolled over on the ground several times. He returned home and is confined to his bed with a dislocated shoulder. He suffered considerably from the shock to his system caused by the rolling over on the snowy and icy pavement. As MR. RUSSELL who is the Exchange Street carriage manufacturer jumped, the momentum carried him up against MR. DEARBORN's fence, scraping his leg considerably and shaking up his system. He returned home and remained in yesterday. The little girls remained in the car throughout the excitement. One of the doors fell on MISS EVA MCKENNA, who is 11 years old, but MR. RUSSELL lifted it up and took her out. Both were uninjured and continued on their way down street. The motorman, JAMES EVERETT GARLAND, showed great courage sticking to his post until after the car struck. He stood with one hand on the tightly set brake and one on the controller. The car was not overturned and was wedged between the electric pole and the tree. If the pole had not been there it is probably that the car would have crashed into MR. DEARBORN's house. The debris was collected soon afterward by a truck team. There is very little of the car left that is of use above the trucks. One of the Quinsigamond Lake cars was used for the rest of the day. It is much larger than the old car and the passengers of the road hope that the new cars will be as large, as the patronage warrants a larger car than the old one for many trips. ======================================================= Jacqueline Sleeper Russell Website: _http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=otsegoroad&id=I23240_ (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=otsegoroad&id=I23240) **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. 2. Vital Records Project
    3. Jackie, I was unable to find a Delia Lucius/Lucus. I checked all of the births for 1861 in Deerfield and Greenfield. The closest I could find was the following: Elnora Lucous, June 29, 1861, in Greenfield, to ---- & Mary (Field). (There is another name written in here, Shandrew or Shandren. Can't tell if it really belongs to this record or not.) The father was a harness maker and was born in Montreal, Can. Mary was born in Sorell, Can. Good luck. :-) John & Jodi Massachusetts Vital Records Administrators - http://MA-VitalRecords.org If you find this site of value - http://MA-VitalRecords.org/Donate.html Quoting Jackie <jp55@wt.net>: > Looking for the birth record of Delia Lucius (often misspelled as Lucus) in > Deerfield or Greenfield.
