While not exactly behind City Hall, it was in the area. I know there were families living on Orange St and I do recall one of the students being a Paul Lavallee and I think he lived in the area. I lived in Greendale and later off Park Avenue so I did not know a lot of the families that lived in the area. The school has been gone for quite a few years but you might check with NotreDame Church records to see if they might have info on your Lavale or Lavallee family. Notre Dame Church is located across the square from the Commons and served Catholic families in the area. Also you might want to check the 1920 and 1930 census for Beatrice. Ted Richard

    1. [MAWORCES] Web Update
    2. Ray Brown
    3. I have added more marrage records to my web site. The newest two are for Rutland and Sutton, MA. Both have a lot of marrages of people from other town's. They include some from New Hampshire and it looks like in Sutton they did not always record the State as a lot of Northeast CT towns are listed, but not the State. I am not that fimalier with eastern MA to know if there were towns with those names in MA. Some of the other new ones are: North Branford Church, Branford, CT Douglass, MA Enfield, CT Hartland, CT Leominister, MA 2 Churches in Milford, CT Uxbridge, Ma Westminister, MA I have more cemeteries from CT and NH that will be added later, won't be doing much until fall, will be out enjoying the Summer. URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rbrown/ This also has links to my other web sites. Ray

    3. The entire block behind City Hall in Worcester was called the common. No-one lived on it unless you count those who were buried there. I do not remember a bear drinking soda: would like to hear about that one. I do remember a donkey about 20 miles west of Worcester who drank beer. The teen agers used to help him imbibe ! This was around the 1960s. No, I was not one who gave it to him ! But probably my kids did. Arline (Taylor) Larson arline7@bellsouth.net

    1. [MAWORCES] Re:Does anyone remember . . . ?
    2. I just spent an evening trying to get information from the memory banks of my aunt and uncle who lived in Worcester as children, about 60 yrs ago. Can anyone help with these leads on family they remember? Does anyone have any further information about a woman who lived behind the City Hall named Beatrice Lavale, or something like that? How about a bear that drank soda pop/tonic at a place where you could buy the pop for 10 cents to give to the bear? I think an uncle of theirs owned the bear. Sounds like life had its amusements back then, especially in my family. I asked them about the towers in the parks but they didn't remember them. Thanks, Sandra

    3. The way I handled this was to get another web site elsewhere for the pictures. I even got a third web site someplace different for some maps with large file sizes. It won't make much of a difference to the viewer as they navigate via your links no matter where they link to. Would some with access to the 1870 MA census (other than Ancestry.com) look up the following 2 families on printed page 419 in Worcester Co., Milford Town: Peter Hill 40 w/ wife Margaret and children: Mary, Annie, Catherine, William. Arthur Hill 40 w/ wife Margaret and children: Mary A, Elizabeth and William. I would appreciate all the info recorded. Thank you. Ancestry, for some reason, has only the first 35 pages of this town and the remaining 160+ pages are not on line. Nanci

    1. [MAWORCES] worcester parks and towers
    2. Robin, I went to school in Worcester in the 50's and remember well the parks; Green Hill Park has a tower, so does Institute Park and I think there was one in Davis Park. Bancroft Tower (off Park Avenue near Worcester Polytech) is on the register of historic places. If you go to the search engine Google and type in Worcester and then add Green Hill Park you will get some pictures of the parks in Worcester. I don't know the significance of the towers ... I know there is a tower like structure in a cemetery in Milford Worcester County and it is a copy of towers in Ireland. Jean

    3. Hi All: I was wondering if s.k.s out there could help me find some info on this. When I was a small kid I use to visit my grand parents and aunts in Worcester, I can remember my aunt taking me to an old stone tower or fort at the end of Hamilton St. she told me that it was used by the early settlers for protection from the Indians. She also took me to I think Green Hill park where there was another tower that was used for the same thing. What I would like to know is, 1 how many of these forts or towers there were and where they all were? 2 were they all over the state? Thanks. Ray Hunting. 1. [MAWORCES] Probate Abstracts
    2. Does anyone have access to: Probate Abstracts of Worcester County by Janet Kathleen Pease? I found it at the Ft Wayne, IN Library on-line catalog, and had contacted a volunteer look up a couple of months ago but apparently she is still busy trying to get a book published/printed, and I am getting "desperate" to get information from this book, if available, for a couple of families whose lines I am trying to solve but keep banging my head against a very thick brick wall. Unfortunately, no library near me to order even if available for loan in one form or another. Olive California

    1. [MAWORCES] Elisa (Ducy) Tehan West Brookfield 1852-?
    2. Edward L. Smith
    3. Looking for information regarding Eliza Tehan mentioned in the will of John Ducy (May 1890)as his daughter. Believed to be Elisa age 3 in the 1855 Irish only census for West Brookfield. Do West brookfield records list her birth and marriage? Also interested in step daughter Mary Ann Mahanney b. abt 1844, who was also mentioned in this will. Is there any mention of this person in West Brookfield records? I don't know if Mahanney is a maiden name or a married name. She was to be cared for under the provisions of the will. Also interested in other children not mentioned in the will - possibly had died by 1890. Laurence b. abt 1849, and Ellen M. b. abt 1848. Possibly buried Sacred Heart Cemetery in West Brookfield. A son John b. abt 1855 was mentioned in the will. Were their any other children?

    2. As all list members probably know by now, my brick wall is my "Lovely" family. I was lucky enough to spend another day researching in Massachusetts, but still could find nothing. So I am trying another tactic- looking into my great grandmother's sister's husband's families. I am searching for any of the following men who married Lovely girls in Millbury between 1880-1896. Their parent's names were Mitchell Lavalee/Lovely and Adeline Chapdelaine (name not really established yet) BELAND, Horris "Albert", married Mary 1880 WHITE, Peter, married Julia 1886 MINER, Marcus, married Christina 1889 DONER, Victor, married Octavia 1884 BEAUREGARD, Eugene, married Georgianna 1883 ST GEORGE, Eugene, married Adeline "Delia" 1888 CONWAY, John, married Eliza "Lizzie" 1891 BERTHIAUME, Ephraim, married Rosanna 1896 Thanks! 2. frye
    3. I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 2426 prisoners of war on record from the state of Massachusetts and more than 800 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask.
