    3. He subsequently became a student at the Worcester Academy. From 18 to 20 years of age he was in poor health, on account of overwork. When about 20 years of age he began work as a house carpenter, with his cousin, and later worked at the sash and blind business at Worcester and Millbury. Later still he worked as a finisher of passenger coaches, but believing his health demanded outdoor, free air work, he abandoned his trade and established himself in the dairy business, starting a milk route in the city of Worcester. In this he has been remarkably successful. He sold his own milk products, also much obtained from outside parties. The quality of his milk and the obliging manner of the "driver" has enabled him to continue on the same route for many years, but he has now retired from active work. During the summer of 161 he took an extended trip on the sea in a coasting vessel, which proved good for his failing health. Politically Mr. EATON is a Republican. For almost 15 years he served as selectman of his town, during which time he generally served in the capacity of presiding officer of the board. In 1884 he represented his district in the legislature. He has also been a member of the school committee. In the autumn of 1861 Mr. EATON was married to Martha M., daughter of John and Lavina (STONE) BLOOD, of Charlton. Mrs. EATON's grandfather was of Scotch blood, and an early settler at Charlton

    3. Biographical Review XXX Sketches of leading citizens of Worc. Co. Mass. page 824 Lewis HENSHAW, a veteran agriculturist of East Brookfield, son of Baxter HENSHAW, was born in Brookfield, Sept. 5, 1821. He is a descendant of one of the early settlers of this section of Worcester County, his grandfather, Joshua HENSHAW, having located here when a young man, and having afterward contributed his full share toward the upbuilding of the town which wasto be his permanent home. The father, who spent his entire life in Brookfield, was for many years one of its leading citizens. He adhered through life to the occupation in which he was reared, and was recognized as a skillful agriculturist. Interested in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the town and county, he was a most desirable official, and for several years served as Selectman. He married Lovisa ADAMS, also of Brookfield. Of their children, the survivors are: Melinda, the widow of James HOWLAND, late of this town; Lewis, the subject of his sketch; Louisa A., the wife of George KENDRICK, of West Brookfield; Charles R. of Brookfield; and Lucy E., the widow of the late William PIERCE, of this town. The deceased children were: Elbridge, Loring and George. Lewis HENSHAW had what regular schooling the neigborhood afforded, a few weeks each winter at the little red school house. The knowledge tere obtained he supplemented by reading and by practical experience. On reaching man's estate he left the parental homested to begin the battle of life for himself. For 2 years he worked as a farm laborer. Then he turned his attention to shoemaking, which he followed continuously for a number of years. Soon after his marriage he purchased his present farm of 100 acres in East Brookfield, where he has been successfully engaged in general farming, including, to some extent, lumbering, dairying, ad stock raising. An unswerving Republican in politics, he has faithfully served his town as Selectman, besides which he has held many offices of minor importance, andon several occasions has acted as juryman. Whena boy of 10 years he became actively interested in the temperance cause, of which he has since been an ardent advocate. He takes pardonable pride in the fact that he has never tasted spirituous liquors. On October 23, 1845, Mr. HENSHAW married Clarinda W., daugher of Welcome WOOD, of Brookfield, Mass. He has had 3 children, namely: Royal L., now of New York City; Lovisa M., who is now the wife of Charles VARNEY, and has 4 children---Florence A., Leah B., Charles R., and Raymond L.; and a babe, who is now deaceased.
