    3. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Mass. Vol 2, page 445 Edmund BRIDGES, (I) the immigrant ancestor of George C. BRIDGES, of Warren, Mass. was born in England in 1612. He sailed from London in the ship "James" Jan. 13, 1635, then aged 23 years and settled in Lynn, Mass. Hewas a blacksmith by trade. He was admitted a freeman Sept. 7, 1639, and was a proprietor of the town. He removed to the adjacent town of Rowley and was also a proprietor in that town. He had a suit in court at Ipswich in 1641. A curious incident is related of him. The general court of Mass., May 26, 1647, ordered him to aswer at the Essex Court for neglect to further public service by delaying to shoe Mr. SYMOND's horse when he was about to come to court. Evidently nothing serious resulted because SYMONDS was delayed and history fails to tell us what the punisment for such an offense was. It may be said here that the court records of those days were merely made up of such nonsensical charges as this one. BRIDGES deposed in 1658 that he was about 46 years old. He removed to Ipswich and later to Topsail, adjacent towns. He died Jan. 13, 1684. His will mentions wfe Mary and children John, Josiah, Faith, Black, Bethia and Mary. He married (1st) Alice (?). She married (2nd) Peter CLAYES, Sr., and during the witchcraft delusion she came near being hanged for a witch. 3. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester, County, Mass. Vol 2, pgs. 409, 410, 411 Nathaniel WALLIS (I) the immigrant amcester of the WALLIS family of Douglas, Mass., was born in 1632 in Cornwall, England. The name WALLACE is Scotch and there is a tradition that this family originally came from Scotland, but there is no doubt of the fact that the American progenitor came from Engand. He was an early settler at Scarborough, Maine. He as a constable in Falmouth (now Portland), Maine. He was among those who swore allegiance to Mass. in 1658, but in July 1660, he had 3 children baptized by Rev. Robert JORDAN, who adhered to the Church of England in that her lowest hour of distress, and WALLIS was censured for allowing the baptism by the general court of Mass. as shown by the colonial records, Volume IV. SAVAGE thinks the son John was one of those baptized according to the rubric. The family was driven from Falmouth in 1681 when Falmouth was destroyed by the Indian Wars, and he finally settled at Beverly, Mass. He was there before 1701. In 1692 he gave his age as 58 years old, but the authority for 1632 as the year of his birth seems better than this statement. Nathaniel WALLIS married Margaret (?), who was born in 1630 and died May 14, 1711. He died at Beverly, Oct. 18, 1709. Their children were: Nathaniel Jr., settled at Beverly, married Anna and had a large family; John, mentioned below; Bartholomew; Caleb, settled at Beverly, married Sarah (?) and had a large family; Joshua, settled at Beverly, married Abiah, and had 1 child, named Mary born Sept. 1694; Mary. John WALLIS believed to be Nathaniel WALLIS' s brother, was in Scarborough in 1658, settled in Gloucester and was prominent there. He died at Gloucester on Sept. 23, 1690, leaving wife Mary and sons Josiah, Joseph, James and Benjamin. Benjamin and James, sons of John WALLIS, also lived in Beverly, Mass. (II) John WALLIS, son of Nathaniel WALLIS (I) was born about 1653 and died before 1720. He resided in York County, Maine. He married Bridget SHEPARD, daughter of John SHEPARD. Their children were: Sarah born 1675; John, mentioned below; Margaret born about 1679: Barthalomew born about 1682; Elizabeth born about 1685; Nathaniel born about 1688, settled in Sherborn, Mass. ; Benjamin born about 1690; Mary born 1693. (III) John WALLIS, son of John WALLIS (II) was born May 13, 1679. He lived in Billerica, Mass. from 1710 to 1718, when he removed to Sherborn, Mass., in the part that was set-off from Holliston in 1724. Several years later he removed to Douglas, Mass. where his son Benjamin became a permanent settler. He died there on Dec. 26, 1763. He married in Sudbury, Mass. on July 19, 1717, Mary TWITCHELL, daughter of John and Mary TWITCHELL, of Sherborn. The line of ancestry here given was established by Hon. Ezra S. STEARNS by finding the deed dated 120 in which John WALLIS, of Sherborn, sells " to my brother Benjamin TWITCHELL, Jr. (brother of his wife) land in York County, Maine, being my right in land of my grandfather, John SHEPARD, and land belonging to my father, John WALLIS, deceased son of Nathaniel WALLIS". Nathaniel WALLIS, his brother, also lived in Sherborn for a short time, having 3 children born there. The children of John and Mary (TWITCHELL) WALLIS were; John Jr., born Dec. 20, 1717 at Sherborn; Mary; Nathaniel born at Sherborn on Oct. 12, 1721; Benjamin born Dec. 15, 1723, mentioned below; Sarah; Rachel born in Holliston, Mass., formerly Sherborn, Mass. on April 10, 1734, married Jabez LEWIS. 3. -----Original Message----- From: Regi Milan [mailto:rmilan@xmission.com] Sent: Monday, October 14, 2002 5:42 AM To: VERMONT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VERMONT] NEW & IMPROVED IGI ON FAMILYSEARCH.ORG! Dear Listers.... I only subscribe to 3 mailing lists, so if you subscribe to others in addition to one of the above, please pass this important information along: You may have recently noticed the familysearch.org site was having some frustrating problems these past 3 weeks. Well, there's a very good reason why and I'm sure you'll be very happy to hear it! I currently serve as a family history consultant for the LDS Church and here is the memo (in part) we received about the recent changes that took place on the site. "A new version of the International Genealogy Index (IGI) is now available on www.familysearch.org, the LDS Church's Family Search Internet Site. This new version contains the following enhancements: --Additional Names - More names have been added to the index. These names were received since the last release in January 2000. (Reminder that this does not mean the database is complete. They are still playing catch-up on some records, so keep checking back). --Regular updates - The index will be updated regularly as new information is received. No longer will the wait be the usual 3 years for an update. Note: For those individuals you know you do not have Internet access and visit a local LDS Family History Center to review the IGI, etc., please let them know that the Internet's version of the IGI will be more updated than the Centers will. Not all centers have Internet access and still rely on the typical 3-year updates for their information. --Individuals linked as families - Some names are linked into families and can be displayed on family group records and pedigree charts (previously offered only in the Ancestral File). The number of linked individuals is relative small, but is expected to grow significantly in the future. You can also download family group records and pedigree charts. --Additional Event Information - All events that were in original user submissions are now displayed and can be used as search criteria. --Improved searching - You can now search the index by given name, surname and state, and more types of events, even across regions. The processes used to find individuals in spite of spelling and other differences in the name have also been improved. --Information to describe the source - When you display an individual's records, you will see messages that describe the source of information. Also, the batch number and film number searches have been simplified." FOR LDS MEMBERS ONLY... --Ordinance information soon to be available - Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will soon be able to view ordinance records in the IGI on the familysearch.org Web site. This service will entail a special registration process which will require certain membership information to gain access to this sacred data. Watch for ward and stake announcements about this in the next few weeks. I know what the requirements are, but have chosen not to publicize it here to do my part in protecting these holy records. Well, that's it! Enjoy the new and improved familysearch.org and happy hunting! 1. [MAWORCES] NOTICED SOME ON WORCESTER PAGE HAVE CANADIAN ROOTS & two web addresses
    2. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw& p=localities.northam.canada.quebeceasterntownship.stanstead The above web site is for STANSTEAD COUNTY PROVINCE OF QUEBEC CANADA. Many pioneer families from Massachusetts were early settlers in this region. You can find a FREE SEARCH site listed on this bulletin board for any ancestors you think might have lived in this area. It is also very easy to find other regions in the Townships from this page. My STANSTEAD COUNTY ancestors came to Worcester in 1907 when my great grandfather, FRANK H. SLEEPER, took a position as an engineer with the MORGAN SPRING COMPANY of Worcester. He later in 1911 started his own business called SLEEPER & HARTLEY, Inc., which manufactured spring manufacturing machinery in Worcester until it closed in 1991. The old SLEEPER & HARTLEY building is now TATNUCK BOOKSELLERS. KINEFAC of Worcester, bought or merged with SLEEPER & HARTLEY, INC and continues the manufacture. Here is the address for a web site I recently created for my great grandfather, FRANK H. SLEEPER. This has family history and photography. http://www.genealogy.com/users/r/u/s/Jacqueline-Sleeper-Russell-CA/?Welcome=10 34537745 ALSO, Robert Parson who administers the Government of Canada web site for Canadian Inventors is presently helping me locate patents for FRANK H. SLEEPER in Canada and England and Europe. Many are available online. He would like to print items from the publication MASSACHUSETTS INDUSTRIES on FRANK H. SLEEPER if I can ever find out what the copyright history is on these 4 volumes by Orra L. Stone. Orra L. Stone was born in Worcester on 27 May 1873. the son of Louis Laville Stone and Josephine Adell Cheney. He had a sister Ina Cheny Stone B. 16 Jan 1880 Clinton, Worcester, County, Ma. The publishing company no longer exists and I cannot find anything recent on Orra L. Stone. Jacqueline Sleeper Russell
