The children of William EARLE were: #1 Mary, born 1655, married John BORDEN #2 William, born at Portsmouth, RI , married Elizabeth (?) #3 Ralph, see forward #4 Thomas, married Mary TABER #5 Caleb, married Mary (?)#6 John, born at Portsmouth, RI, marrried Mary WAIT #7 Prudence, married Benjamin DURFEE (III) Ralph EARLE, son of William EARLE (II) born in 1660, married Mary (CARR) HICKS, widow of John HICKS, and daughter of Robert CARR of Newport, RI. She died the same year that he died, 1757, at Leicester, Mass. and both are buried in the Friends' Burying Ground at Leicester, where the graves of no less than 6 generations of their descendants are. The earliest known record of Ralph EARLE is to the effect that he had taken the freeman's oath prior to March 24, 1686. In 1688 his father gave to him and his wife the land adjoining the "fall river" at Pocasset, in Freetown. His removal to and occupancy of this land must have occured soon afterward. He lived there between 25 and 30 years, the site of this house being on what is now Bedford Street, about 10 rods northeast of the northeast corner of the market, which was standing in 1860. The house had a gambrel roof and was destroyed about 1848. He was surveyor of Highways in 1690-92-96, constabe in 1699, and grand juryman in 1700 and 1715. He had the military title of ensign. In 1716 he went through Providence, RI into the interior of Massachusetts, as far as what is now Leicester. On the way, at Grafton, he had hired an Indian, named Moses Printer, as guide. Over part of the way there was no path and they blazed their way back again. In 1717 he removed with part of his family to Leicester and purchased of the original proprietors of the town two tracts of land, containing in the aggregate 550 acres. One of the tracts included the Mulberry Grove, now or lately owned by George and Billings MANN. And the other was on the westside of Asnebumskit Hill. in what is now town of Paxton. Its westerly boundary appears to have been the road leading northerly from the PENNIMAN place, a mile east of Paxton and a half mile northeasterly from the present village of Leicester, on Mulberry Street, and very near the site of the residence now or lately owned by Benjamin WILSON. It was a one story house wth a gambrel roof and was torn down in 1846. In 1721 he was a member of the Congregational Church of Leicester. Within a year a Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers, was organized in the town and he joined it. In 1732 he ad his sons William and Robert, with 4 other men, asked to be released from paying any part of the tax forthe support of the minister or ministers established by the laws of this province, alleging that they as Quakers with conscientious scruple against paying such a tax.
After the sentence ending : Island of Aqueedneck. The next sentence should say: He bought and sold land frequently.... I left out the word "land" in that sentence. Terribly sorry. Marcia
Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Mass. pages 450,451,452 Ralph EARLE (I) who was in Newport, Rhode Island, as early as 1638, was an emigrant ancestor in the paternal line of Mrs. Emily D. RICHARDSON, of Worcester, Mass. He married Joan SAVAGE, who was born in England 1594 or 1595. Ralph EARLE was born in 1606 and they were doubtless married in England. Ralph EARLE was one of 59 persons admitted Oct. 1, 1638, freeman of the Island of Aqueedneck (Newport) . He bought and sold frequently for many years in various parts of Rhode Island. In 1655 and 1669 he served on the grand jury. On May 25th he was appointed by the court of commissioners to keep a house of entertainment. He joined a company of horse August 10, 1667, and later was chosen captain. On June 7, 1671, he was on a special jury to try 2 Indians. Ralph claimed the lands of the Dutch House of Good Hope, now Hartford, Conn., and commenced a lawsuit to establish his claim against Richard LORD and James RICHARD, possessors of the Dutch land, about 1667. EARLE affirmed that he purchased the land of UNDERHILL in August 1653, and paid him 20 pounds sterling for it; but UNDERHILL protested against the claim of EARLE. It is not improbable that the claim was well founded. The children of Ralph and Joan (SAVAGE) EARLE are: #1 Ralph, married Dorcas SPRAGUE;#2 William , married (1st) Mary WALKER and (2nd) Prudence (?) #3 Mary, married William CORY #4 Martha married William WOOD #5 Sarah, married Thomas CORNELL. He was admitted a freeman at Bristol, RI , May 11, 1658, and on May 18th he was admitted a freeman of the colony at the general court held at Warwick on June 8th, in the same year, he was chosen to represent Bristol in the general court of trals at Newport. He was given a grant of land in partnership with William Cory May 1, 1665, provided they maintain a windmill for the use of the town. In 1668 the windmill had been erected. William EARLE removed to Dartmouth about 1670, and stayed there several years, his interests there being large. He owned more than 2,000 acres from his claims in the original division of the land. The general assembly for Rhode Island and Providence plantations, for the electin of general officers for the colony, was held May 6, 1691, at the house of William EARLE, it being removed from Newport by reasoning of the dstemper. He was a deputy from Portsmouth to the general assemblies held at Providence, Oct. 25, 1704, an at Newport May 1, 1706, and July 3, 1706. He made a will Nov. 13, 1713, mentioning various legatees. Hi Fellow Worcester Researchers, I received this letter from someone who asked that I post it to the list. If anyone has any information to share with Joan, I'm sure it would mean a lot to her. In the meantime, I will send her the information to join this mailing list. Thanks, Margie ----- Original Message ----- From: NotelyJoan@aol.com To: hoejbusk@prodigy.net Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 1:21 PM Subject: RE: Worcester mailing list Hi Margie, How does one get on the Worcester mailing list? I am looking for ancestors in the Worcester County area and so far no one has found them and we are still searching. I am disabled and homebound and only get out when someone takes me out which makes it even harder for me to go searching. Thank God for this Computer because it has enabled me to find lots of places to go for information. I found most of my famy line, Desjarlais, dating back to Normandie, France in 1644. And my cousin on my X-husband's side of the family is helping to do his line; it is the same as hers so what I have is of benefit to her and visa versa. My problem is, I am trying to do my Uncle Norman Gevry's family as a surprise for his daughter Joyce (my 1st cousin) who is my caregiver. His father is John Gevry born in Canada under the name of Jean Baptiste GEVRY and he, his Father Simon, Mother Rosalie (Rose), Brothers Joseph, Henry, Louis and sister Virgina all came to the States (Worcester County, Webster area) around 1890-1900. Henry settled in Leominister and raised a family. Have it in Census record. Louis settled in Webster and rased a very big family. He had 2 possibly 3 wives and he has a son still living, Bernard 78 years old. we have been in touch but he does not remember very much. I have also been in touch with his daughter in Florida but all papers are up here so she and I will get together next summer to see what we can find. Now for my Direct Family, Normand Gevry. His daughter told me that He was born February 26, 1912 in Webster, MA but someone from another list looked it up and could not find it. His Parents: John (Jean Baptiste) GEVRY and Amanda "Robitaille" GEVRY Should have been in some record in Webster but they could not find any. Another person tried Leominster for me but only found Henry and his family. According to the SSDI records there were several of John and Amanda's children born in MA. I have sent for Uncle Norman's SS Application which should give me and Idea as to where he lived, I hope. I found John Gevry with another wife Maud in the 1920 Census (name spelled GEVERY) in Burrillville, RI with all his children. Norman was only 7 years, 10 mos. born in MA as were Dorothy, Aurore and Cora. Arthur and Ida were born in CT. I need to find evidence of the existance of John Gevry & Amanda Robitaille living in MA. How can I do this? Is there other List in MA that I can join? I am on MA-rooters but that keeps bouncing back.. Can you please give it a shot or put this information on the Worcester mailing list for me. I am hoping to find them. They can not hide from me forever. Thanks Joan NotelyJoan@aol.com

First, they have books for all the cemeteries - besides St. Mary's which is very large, there are several other cemeteries. Vernon Grove Cemetery, and North Purchase are all I can think of at the moment. The other Catholic Church is Sacred Heart. The Milford Daily News is the local paper, and it has been published since the late 1800's. The library has it on microfilm. I don't know if it circulates. The library is not strong on city directories, although they do have some. The 2 big industries were quarrying granite and shoe factories, both of which attracted a large population of Italian people. The cemetery records are in a database so are not too hard to check. I worked with Barbara Coppinger at the rectory. She was quite nice and very helpful. She may know of another parish that existed in Milford. St. Mary's was originally an Irish parish, but I'm sure they had Italian parishioners as well. I believe this is also the primary Catholic Cemetery in Milford. Hope this is helpful. > Nanci > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Daniel Gubler-Jones > To: nanci > Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 5:56 PM > Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Genealogical Records, 20th century, Antelli > > > i found basilio in the census for 1920 through normal searching, i dont have an Ancestry subscription though. > > nanci <npane@ncweb.com> wrote: > > Daniel, > Have you checked Ancestry.com for info? The only parish I know in Milford is St. Mary of the Assumption. They also have a cemetery. Address: 27 Pearl St., Milford, MA 01757 Phone (508) 473-2000 You can call and ask if they will look up cemetery records for you surnames.
