    1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Fw: [MAWORCES] WHITNEY Family #7 Part 1
    2. Dear WRG & Others: In the posting on the MAWORCES-L maillist of the Henry Whitney family, under (II) John, the information quoted below is given. The last item in the quoted material is erroneous. The Samuel Whitney who married Anne Laborie is NOT a descendant of Henry Whitney through his son John, but of John(1) Whitney of Watertown, MA, through John(2) and Nathaniel(3) to Samuel(4). See the descent as described on the Whitney Research Group website at: http://www.whitneygen.org/ > > He married March 17, 1674-5 to Elizabeth SMITH, daughter of Richard > > SMITH. Their children were: (1) John born March 12, 1676-7, married > > Elizabeth FINCH (2) Joseph born March 1, 1678-9, millwright, married > > Hannah HOYT (3) Henry born Feb.21, 1680-1, weaver, married Elizabeth > > OLMSTEAD (4) Elizabeth married Joseph KEELER (5) Richard born April 18, > > 1687, married Hannah DARLING (6) Samuel born 1688, married Ann LABOREE > This Samuel(4) is in my own direct line of descent, and his ancestry has been the subject of a long proof provided by Robert Ward, also in the archives of "whitneygen.org" Happy Hunting. 3. (VIII) Rev. George S. BALL, sonof Micah Ross BALL (VII) was born in Leominster on May 22, 1822. He received a meager education in the district schools until the age of 16, when obtaining a release of his time from his father, he devotedhimself to study in the higher schools within his reach. He found it hard to earn enough to pay for his education, but perservered working it is said with his books in one hand and his work in the other. He was in the frst cass to graduate from the Unitarian Theological Shool at Meadville, Penn. in 1847. In the Fall of the same year he was called to the Unitarian Church in Ware, Mass. and was ordained there on Oct. 13, 1847. He remained there 2 years, when he asked for his dismission on account of ill heath. After a few months he began to preach at Upton, Mass., and after a few months accepted a call there and was installed as minister in Feb., 1850. This pastorate continued until April 11, 1892. He became a leading citizen of the town as well as a prominent clergyman. In 1861 he was elected Representative to the General Court for the district, composed of Northbridge and Upton, but about the same time he was chosen Chaplain of one of the Worcester County Regiments, already in the field, the famous 21st Regiment of Volunteers. His patriotism and the pressing needs of the soldiers in the field made him decide to go to the front instead of accepting the legislative honors and remaining in his church work. He accepted the post of Chaplain and went at once to Annapolis, Maryland, where the Regiment was then stationed. In the first battle of the Regiment, he won the hearts of the soldiers by his brave and efficient aid to the wounded, and in the report of the Colonel commanding, a copy of which was transmitted by the General in command to Governor ANDREWS, he was generously commended. He was with the Regiment 13 months. It was a sad day in the Regiment when he left. His pastorate was interrupted once more when for 2 years he served as colleague of the Rev. Dr. KENDALL, at Plymouth, Mass. He was chaplain of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1863 after his return from the field, and was a member of the House the following year. 1. [MAWORCES] Herbert ALEXANDER d. Oxford, MA 30 NOV 1950
    2. Hi- New to this list. Am looking for obit for Herbert ALEXANDER, b. Massachusetts abt. 1873. He married (2nd marriage) Harriet (CROSS) LaBarge in Bellows Falls, VT in 1917. He was working as a printer in Winchendon at the time. He is the same Herbert ALEXANDER who rushed from Winchendon to Lynn, MA in 1915 when his mother, Caroline (Howard or Cowan) ALEXANDER, died from burns suffered in a coal stove accident. LDS website identifies the parents of a Herbert Clayton ALEXANDER who died 30 NOV 1950 in Oxford as Francis P. ALEXANDER and Ella Jeanne HOLTON. I believe this to be incorrect. If this is my Herbert, as I believe it is, then his parents are Charles ALEXANDER and the above stated Caroline. Can anyone do a newspaper lookup for this obit? Herbert is my g-grandfather, and I believe he was still married to my g-grandmother when he married Harriet CROSS. Any mention in the obit of his three daughters in Essex County would disprove that theory. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. His life has been one big mystery to me. Brian

The sureties of HASTING's bond were Benjamin FLAGG, Jr., son of a brother of his uncle, and Daniel JOHNSON, a neighbor at Shrewsbury. On Dec. 10, 1740, Phineas BALL bought 30 acres of land of Jonas CLARKE in the North part of Worcester adjoining the Shrewsbury line. Phineas BALL sold this land or part of it to Silas BENNETT, Jan. 23, 1748-49, when it is described as in Holden ( the North precinct of Worcester) near the Shrewsbury line. The birth of his children are all recorded as given below in Holden, Mass.: #1Daniel born Jan. 9, 1742, baptized at Shrewsbury with his father on June 6, 1742 #2 Jemima born Feb. 6, 1744 #3 Abner born April 8, 1746 #4 Elijah born March 2, 1748 #5 Benjamin born March 31, 1750. 3. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Mass. Vol. 2 pgs. 14,15,16,17,18 John BALL (I) who settled at Watertown, Mass. in 1650, was the progenitor of Phineas BALL, late Mayor of the city of Worcester, of Rev. George S. BALL, of Upton, and of most of the Worcester County families with this surname. He is said to have come from Wiltshire in England. He was admitted a freeman of Watertown on May 22, 1650. He removed to Concord and died there in 1655, on Nov. 1, according to one record, but was according to another buried on Oct. 1, 1655. The inventory of his estate was filed in the Middlesex Court. The 3 children of this John and Elizabeth BALL were: #1 Nathaniel, who settled in Concord, in the part now included in Bedford; married Feb. 7, 1670 to Margery BATEMAN, widow of Thomas BATEMAN of Concord, Mass. and had 4 children: Ebenezer, Eleazer, John, and Nathaniel #2 John #3 Abigail born April 26, 1656 (post humously) (II) John BALL, sonof John BALL (I) was born about 1620. He was a tailor by trade. He married Elizabeth PIERCE, daughter of John PIERCE of Watertown. His wife died after a trying illness. He married (2nd), Oct. 3, 1665, to Elizabeth FOX, daughter of Thomas FOX of Concord. He had 5 children by the first marriage, and 1 child by the second, if the records are complete. Oct. 21, 1665 he sold his farm at Watertown, purchased originally of John LAWRENCE, and settled at Lancaster, where with his wife and infant child, he was slain by the Indians in the attack of Feb. 20, 1676, in King Philip's War. His estate was administered by his son, John BALL, Jr., appointed Feb. 1, 1677-8. The children of John and Elizabeth (PIERCE) BALL were: #1 John born 1644 #2 Mary #3 Sarah #4 Esther born about 1655 #5 Abigail born at Watertown, April 20, 1658, died young. The children of John and Elizabeth (FOX) BALL were: Joseph born March 12, 1669-70. It appears from the history of Lancaster that John BALL (II), who was killed as stated before, was one of the first 3 settlers in Lancaster, as early as 1643, a fact that explains perhaps why so little is to be found about him in the Watertown records. Lancaster was originally called "Nashaway". It was purchased of Sholan, sachem of the Nashaways, by Thomas KING and others and comprised a tract 8 miles wide by 10 miles long, and the deed was approved by the General Court. The company in accordance with their agreement to make a settlement sent 3 men, Richard LINTON, Lawrence and John BALL, to whom lots were given, to make preparations for the general coming of the proprietors. Winthrop in his history under the date of May 1644, stated that many from Watertown and other towns joined the plantation at Nashaway and wished to call one Mr. NORCROSS to be their minister, but they were not encouraged as there were no houses built in the settlement. At the end of 1644 there were but 2 dwellings in the place, occupied by BALL, LINTON and WATERS. The two latter remained and their descendants have figured largely in Lancaster history.
