    3. MASSACHUSETTS HOUSE BILL H5158 - OPEN RECORDS CLOSED! The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) initiative to RESTRICT the current and historically OPEN vital records of the Commonwealth with House Bill H5158 HAS PASSED THE MA HOUSE TODAY December 30, 2002! All that remains is the Massachusetts Senate and Exiting Governors rubber stamp Did YOU have the opportunity to review the text and give your testimony in HEARINGS? NO! Do you even have ACCESS to the H5158 text? NO! Behind closed doors and in the hallways of the legislature, taking advantage of the informal sessions, Lame Duck status and holidays, a handful of people have take away YOUR RIGHTS to YOUR HERITAGE! Fargo SFargo@senate.state.ma.us http://www.state.ma.us/legis/member/scf0.htm SUMMARY: The Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) initiative to STOP H5158 from passage at the tail end of the July 2002 formal sessions was successful - thanks to the response of all CONCERNED citizens in the genealogical community. Although the response of many legislators indicated that they had clearly not READ or did not UNDERSTAND the IMPLICATIONS of H5158, they did understand that large numbers of CONSTITUENTS are AGAINST RESTRICTIONS to the PUBLIC GOOD in the form of POORLY DRAFTED legislation that has had NO PUBLIC HEARINGS! However, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has CONTINUED their efforts! Specifically: December 2002 H5158 language changes have been chosen for the purposes of OTHER BILLS that are not filed yet - Modernization and Fraud Control bills that ALSO have had NO PUBLIC HEARINGS! The MGC continues to be EXCLUDED from the permanent special vital records and statistics committee to oversee the overall improvement including preservation and automation of the vital records and statistics system in the commonwealth. Even though the MDPH has repeatedly said the MGC omission was an oversight, this ERROR PERSISTS in the revisions! NO VERSION of H5158 has been made available to the public via the legislative web site since its FIRST ELEVENTH HOUR introduction in the July formal sessions http://www.state.ma.us/scripts/legis/ltsh.idq?HouseNumber=5158 The most recently reported MDPH H5158 wording changes appear as attempts to clarify the previous problems, but introduce the UNKNOWN impact of the unfiled legislation PROPOSAL DEPENDENCIES! CONTACT YOUR SENATORS! See http://www.state.ma.us/legis/sendis01.htm for 2001-2002 NO CONTROVERSIAL BILL can be passed in informal sessions IF THE CONTROVERSY IS KNOWN! MAKE SURE YOUR SENATOR KNOWS THAT YOU DO NOT APPRECIATE BEING EXCLUDED FROM THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS! YOUR RIGHTS TO RECORDS TO RECORDS ACCESS DESERVE A PUBLIC HEARING! H5158 SHOULD NOT BE PASSED on DECEMBER 31, 2002! Are you interested in learning about your family history? Do you now have a computer and Internet access? This interactive workshop will show you how to use your computer at home and the Internet to document and research your family. This workshop will introduce some popular software programs and techniques for using them effectively. The class will also demonstrate several of the major on-line data sources for American genealogy available and how to use them effectively. This workshop is not meant to be a Genealogy 101 class teaching you all of the techniques that you will use as you delve deeper into this hobby, nor are we going to show techniques for researching in other countries. A workshop project will be done to use the tools and sources to actually build a family tree. Participants interested in having their tree started should bring with them names and birth information on their parents and grandparents." For more information please contact Thomas C. 3. I want to say thank you for asking me to help in your family searches. Some of you I did not help at all, others were luckier. I have more books now and they may give someone a bit of a clue. A few of these books are not in the Worcester County area. I want to say on Christmas Eve to you all, you're the best. My son was born today at 6:38pm and he's 25 today, and I'm very proud of him. He just joined the USAF in September and will be training for several more months in electronic repairs. He also has a new bride that's very understanding. A VERY MERRY and SAFE CHRISTMAS GOD BLESS US ALL Marcia

    1. [MAWORCES] General question
    2. tudemurdog
    3. When I asked a general question, I guess it was the wrong thing to do, but I just wanted to see if anyone knew of "different" places to look for info. I'll copy a note I wrote to another person on the list and maybe it might make the question easier... I posted a general question to the MA list because the family is from GA. That's why it was a GENERAL question, not a MAWORCES question. I thought SKS who is an experienced researcher could give me an idea of WHERE to look for clues not do the research. I have looked in all the COMMON places, wills, obits, cemetery records, directories, etc., and thought someone might know of someplace that isn't so common to look. Looking for Elenore DANIEL born between 1920-1927, not sure where but most likely Phenix City, AL, to Estelle GREGORY (MO 1887, AL 1928) and Walter (aka William) N. DANIEL (GA 1885, LA 1965). Estelle came from St. Louis to Phenix City, AL about 1920 and married Walter. They had Elenore. Estelle died in Dec. 1928, obit says she leaves a daughter Elenore and had been in PC for 8 years. Can't find Estelle in the MO or AL 1920 to verify. Walter DANIEL was born in Thomaston, GA, illegitimate son of Julia Ann DANIEL, father unknown. Has half brother William (aka Walter) R. FULLER, my grandfather, who dies in Denver, CO in Dec. 1926 and is shipped back to PC. AL for burial. Walter DANIEL receives his half brother in PC and pays for his burial and marker. Confused yet??? Walter DANIEL is in PC, AL in 1922 when his mother dies and signs her death certificate (William DANIEL), residence given, same as mother. I know he is the city clerk and treasurer for PC, AL definitely be! tween 1926-1928, probably before that. In Dec. of 1928, he takes a job as traveling auditor for the state of AL. About 1930 he, and I assume Elenore, his daughter, move to New Orleans, LA and in later years, Walter works for the IRS. Walter dies in Mar. 1965, Elenore signs his death certificate with her maiden name, Elenore Daniel, and gives her address the same as her fathers. The cemetery has the deed to the cemetery plot for Walter in a folder, sent registered mail to Elenore's address, unsigned, unopened, not received by Elenore. I can't find Elenore in any of the NO, LA city directories and she disappears off the face of the earth when her dad dies. Elenore paid for the plot, there is no marker on the grave, very nice memorial cemetery. So now you see why I posted for general genealogy research questions and possible places to look. I've exhausted the "normal" places to check and thought someone might have some obscure information idea. I started all this research because my mom was adopted when she was born in 1923 and I wanted to find her family. You can't even imagine the skeletons I've found! There is a good possibility that Elenore DANIEL is still alive and I would love to find her, so please let me know if you have any ideas. The only two others I haven't found are moms 2 biological sisters, but that's a whole other story..... The deed to the plot has Elenores name and the address on the death certificate and that's it. No one else is buried with Walter DANIEL in LA and no one is buried in the plot Elenore's mother is buried in in Phenix City, AL. Walter is mentioned in a book as the city clerk and treasurer in PC but the court house in PC isn't helpful at all in finding additional records. I've found real estate records for Walter, but doesn't give me a clue about Elenore. Judy, Great Dane rescuer, GA

    3. Were Edward A. DENNY an older man he would be known as the "Dean" of the staff of the Stae Mutual Life Assurance Company, of Worcester, Mass., in which in 1932 he rounded out an association with this remarkable corporation of full 4 decades. He eteed the employ of the company as a young man, and in point of continuous service is outranked by very few in the company. Mr. DENNY was born at Worcester, Mass., Dec. 16, 1872, son of Daniel E. and Martha A. (FISHER) DENNY. His father was a native of Worcester, a prominent citizen and leader in politics, who filled many important offices, the gift of the citizens. He died in 1924; Mrs. DENNY was born at Northbrook, Mass., and lived until 1923. Edward A. DENNY attended the public schools, but while in his teens started to make a livelihood for himself, and at the age of 20 secured a job with the State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester. This was in 1892, and his connection with the corporation has been unbroken during the last 40 years. He has served in various capacities and held many offices. Few men know the scope of the corporation's work better. In 1932 he was justly rewarded by elevation to the post of Comptroller of the Mutual Life, a position he now holds. His department is one of the most important in the business, and to be chosen the head of it throws a great deal of light upon the esteem and respect in which he is held. Mr. DENNY has always taken a great deal of interest in his native city and the advancement of its affairs. Fraternally he is affiliated with Morning Star Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, of which he has been the treasurer for 20 years. He is a member of all the bodies of Masonry, up to and including the 32nd Degree, Scottish Rite, and is a member of Aleppo Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. At one time prominent in the social and club life of the city, Mr. DENNY has resigned in recent years from all such organizations except the Chamber of Commerce, the Mechanics Association and the Historical Society, all of Worcester. He is a member of the Congregational Church. In the first year of the present century, Mr. DENNY married Bertha J. GRISWOLD, a native of Connecticut. Mr. and Mrs. DENNY make their home at No. 4 Chamberlain Park, Worcester. Volume 3, Pages 17 and 18 Worcester County, a narrative history By: John Nelson, published 1934

    2. Judy - Have you tried contacting the Funeral home listed on the father's death certificate? They may have a different address, or information on other relatives - maybe you'll get really lucky, and find that no one claimed the funeral book, and they still have it? OK, so we can always hope.... Have you asked for a lookup at the citydirectory list for the father, or others with the same surname in AL? If he was a city clerk, he must be mentioned somewhere. Of course Alabama is a big state, so you need to know what city. You should look for the probate record in the courts. Also, did they own the property they were living at in LA? If so there would be real estate records. Is anyone else buried in their cemetery plot, or nearby? 1. [MAWORCES] searching for Oesterman marriage certificate about 1930
    2. Jocelyn Keene
    3. Hello Worcesterites, I have just joined your list to inquire how to find a marriage certificate for someone (Netta Oesterman) in the timeframe of 1930. I know that in Berks County Pennsylvania (where I have done most of my research) I would look the wedding up on the index on the web and then send $1 with my request to the county registrar but I am not familiar with the procedure for Massachusetts genealogy. Oesterman is not a common name so it shouldn't be difficult to find but I don't have any idea what year she married. I only know that she immigrated to Worcester from England in about 1925-28 and married after reaching there. Thanks for your help, Jocelyn

    3. Below is the outcome of American Diner Museum historian Gary Thomas research on the R & R Diner.. This is Worcester #636, built in 1929 and first known as Parks' Diner at the West Boylston st. address and run by George Park and his brother, whose name I don't know. As far as I know it was known as the R & R from the mid 30s and later known as the City Line Diner under Edmund C. White in the 1945 directory. This diner at 368 West Boylston was moved to Shrewsbury around 1950 and joined with #666 and then found it's way to Norwich, VT. about 1990 and I believe has been moved from there recently. maybe Daniel Zilka knows more about this. There is a picture of it in Micheal Witzel's book joined with the 666, when it was known as the Midway Diner in Shrewsbury. I have a picture of it in the Cambridge area awaiting a move to Vermont around 1990. There was another diner in the 1945 directory known as the City Line Diner and run by Roy E. Smith at 1028 Southbridge St.. but that is only year I see that listing under Smith. (my listings for diners in Worcester are in 5 year increments) This diner was there until about the 1970s and mostly known as the YD Diner under Henry Knowles. I would suggest doing a complete check of all the directories of Worcester of this period to see what they list for the diners in question and Roy Smith or any other people connected.. sometimes in the last listing they will tell you where he may have moved to. Tedious, but one way to get an idea of who was who and so forth. by checking the residence listings also you might get an idea of the family members.hope this helps Gary Thomas Author: Diners of the North Shore
