Dear Listers, When I was growing up in this area. My uncle would take me to Lowell's Dairy in Mendon. It did NOT look like what it did a few years ago before it burnt down. This is what it looked like. You were traveling up ROUTE 16 from Milford OR Hopedale. When you got to the top of the hill at the lights at the corner of ROUTE 16 and to the left was Main Street in Mendon...To the right North Avnue. You continued on straight at the lights heading toward UXBRIDGE. On the left was a grassy Knoll, where the cows grazed. And also on the left was Lowells Dairy. This was at the time, a small basement type structure that you entered from a back door. INSIDE was a large refrigerator with MILK, CREAM, EGGS and BUTTER BUT also was a counter with about 10 stools where you could order a ice cream or a frappe or a sundie. My UNCLE would take us there for ice cream or dairy products. At the time...There was a very large BARN across the street. This is where the cows lived...so if you were traveling up ROUTE 16 you had to slow down OR a complete stop to let the cows go home...SO to speak. The grassy knoll has a small shopping plaza there now with a bank. And across the street where the cows lived is NOW the MENDON GIFT BARN. Later on in time they added hamburgers and hot dogs to their menu. When Lowells burned down a few years ago. They were a FULL RESTAURANT. They could NOT rebuild on that sight BECAUSE MENDON does NOT have town water and most of Mendon lives on WELLS.There was no fire hydrant near Lowells dairy Restauraunt and Mendon had to watch as that Restaurunt burned to the ground. Is WHY they are NOW located In Bellinham. Because Bellingham was trying a few years ago to TYE into Mendon with water... to rebuild Lowells where they were located. The bank at that grassy knoll funded to rebuild...BUT the laws say for fire insurance...HOW far away is the HYDRANT?? They COULD NOT rebuild there. Maureen - There's one memory you probably would want to forget! The Casey pool is still there - just down from the Shaw's supermarket which used to be Iandoli when I first moved to Milford about 25 years ago. It would make sense that Lake Nipmuc is spring fed. I'll try to remember to ask my co-workers. One lives on the lake, and the other one's parents live there. One year, the Mendon children's librarian learned about a cardboard boat race some University did every year as part of a science course. Since then, they've been having one every year at the lake. One more memory just popped up. I remember when Whitinsville's water reservoir never had any houses built around it. The name of the pond isn't remembered at the moment, but we had to park in the woods and walk to the swimming area. Geez, that's about 45+ years ago. We'd swim out to a huge boulder out there. Those were the days. According to my Dad there's houses everywhere out there now. Who'd a figured that would have happened. My last visit to Whitinsville was in 1997. Marcia
Dear Listers, I did grow up in this area. This is about how I earned some of my money as a teen. I had an UNCLE who lived at Madden Ave in Milford. This street is off of WEST street.I also had an AUNT who lived at BROOKSIDE Road in Upton. Two times a week my uncle would give me $5.00 to ride my bicycle to my aunts house in Upton for a visit. I had to go a specific way or NO money. I had to take a left turn out of Madden ave. and onto WEST Street. I had to go down West Street to a set of lights on CONGRESS St. Take a right turn onto CONGRESS st. AT the next set of lights I had to take a right turn ONTO ROUTE 16. I had to ride my bicycle on ROUTE 16 up to MENDON, which has a few very large hills....ON the way I would stop at the MENDON DRIVE IN to take a rest because the next hill was soooo large. AT that time Mendon Drive IN had quite a few amusement rides to put your children on BEFORE the movie started. There were swings and a slide and this ride you would have to PUSH the thing around about 10 or more times to get the Momenton started...Then you jumped on it for a complete dizzy spell as it went around till it stopped. I probally stayed there 15 minutes for a rest BUT I rode those rides for the 15 minutes. Then I would continue up Route 16 to the lights, on the right was Taft ORCHIDS. I would take a right turn onto North Avenue and continue on North Avenue past the CLOUGH School and at the time Mendon Upton Regional High School. And I would continue on till I came to a fork in the road in UPTON...Of which I took a right turn and continued on to PICCADILLY Stree(tor lane). I took a right turn onto PICCADILLY street for about a quarter mile and took a left turn onto BROOKSIDE where I stopped at my Aunt Bess's house and she would give me $5.00. SO 2 times a week I earned $10.00...PLus I had babysitting jobs and Ironing for people...While I was going to high school....ONLY the first 2 years until I got a social security number. Then it was REAL jobs... Maureen _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find. Hi Lisa: I don't know much about the Matthew Taft bunch, only that they are also in the area, and not certain if there is a relation between him and Robert 1 Taft, who I do descend from. Both the Cock and Kettle and Lowells have excellent food. It all depends on what your interested in for food at the time. About Old Cemetery. If you want to see the portrait stone of Rev. Grindall 2 Rawson, once you get to the cemetery, walk towards the old barn. You will see a raised stone foundation. That is what the portrait stone is sitting on. Besides Grindall, his wife, Susannah (Wilson) Rawson is there too. Susannah {Wilson) Rawson's father was Rev. John Wilson, Minister of Medfield, and her grandfathers were Rev. Dr. John Wilson, Minister of Boston, and Rev. Thomas Hooker, founder of Hartford, CT. Grindall and Susannah were second cousins. Her grandfather, Rev. Dr. John Wilson and Edward 1 Rawson's mother were siblings! Grindall is Pres. William Howard Taft's ancestor too. Alison
Computer hint Hint~~~ This is a little hint for those that have a wheel on your mouse. If you are reading something that the print is small and too hard to see, you can make the print larger. Do this: Hold down the Ctrl Key on your keyboard and turn the wheel on your mouse towards you. As you turn it the print gets larger. It works, not on email, but on websites! NOTE: a friend just passed this on to me and it worked on the e-mail she sent me. Enlarged the text quite a bit. Try it out. JSR
Lisa, I never saw the trolleys, in fact if you came from Milford the bus only went to where Stone Furniture is and then you had to walk up Mendon Hill. My family lived near the very top of the hill at the Hopedale/Mendon line. We would get all our stuff together and walk to Lakeview and swim, go in the boats get snacks there etc. Someone else mentioned Lucier Dance school, one of the teachers was Dolly Lucier-she was a wonderful dancer. But they were from Milford and had a huge family of 10 children, I never heard they had anything to do with owning Lakeview. Dolly is still here in Milford and is a hairdresser and owns her own shop. the amusements and boats were still there in the early sixties and I am not sure when they stopped. I moved away from the area and went to visit family on occasion or to Millie Mitchell's for fried clams etc. but really didn't pay any attention to what was on the lake. Now my little Italian great-grandmothers house has been torn down and they have built 4 houses close together on Mendon Hill(Mendon St.), she lived in that house from 1900 to 1967 when she died. They came from Italy to Milford then to Hopedale. I will ask my Mom if she remembers about the trolley and the shows at Lakeview, she is 84 and her and my Dad used to go to clubs and shows often. Helen
Helen - When did the boats stop running? When the Lowell's restaurant was still on Rt 16, they had some nice postcards of Lakeview on the wall when you first went in. Did the Mendon trolley run up to the Lake? This past summer I was talking to woman in her 70's who grew up here. She said they used to have burlesque shows at Lakeview at some point - not exactly sure when, but it must have been in the 1920's Lisa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Helen Ware" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2006 9:20 AM Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Dear Old Mendon > I was raised in the area and we walked from Mendon Hill(St.) to Lake Nipmuck to swim in the 50's, it was always Lake Nipmuck to us in that area. > The peddle boats were the big thing that we enjoyed going out in. > As far as I know there has always been a beach and swimming lessons etc. given on the lake. > My niece had her wedding reception in the ball room and it was a wonderful big Italian style party, the food was the best I ever had at a wedding. > My husband worked as a fry cook for Teddy Mitchell at Millie Mitchell's--the best fried clams in the world! They also had the best cole-slaw but it was a secret recipe that you could never get. My husband worked there as a second job nights and week-ends during the season for many years! He would bring me home a box of clams and fries and then I could eat it at midnight-now I wouldn't dare! > Every time I drive down Rt. 16 by all these places I have fond memories of my youth. So glad others have the same type of memories. > Helen in Milford >
Lisa, I haven't thought about these things in YEARS. When I was younger, I took swimming lessons at P.Eugene Casey pool in Milford. I went as far as I could by 8th grade. So next would be a Lifesavers course.Of which at the time, they took you to Whites Beach in Mendon. They (testers) took you out in a row boat. You had to have your bathing suit on and A shirt over it with a sweatshirt and jeans and socks and sneakers on. Then you had to jump out of the rowboat and one of the testers would jump in the water and you had to take the person and turn them over and cuff your one arm UNDER their necks. And bring them into shore. So when I was in eigth grade I probably weighed about 70 lbs...if that...I was real thin. When I first jumped in the water...I was weighed down by the clothes...Then I had the instructer fighting me...because when someone is drowning...they fight you....I think I made it 2 times BUT on the 3rd try I went UNDER the water...THAT is a TOTAL FAIL...They told me to come back when I put a few pounds on. I remember the names of the people that owned Lakeview previously. They owned a dance Studio in Milford. It was called Lucier's School of Dance. They were Luciers BUT when she died...they said her maiden name was Palmer. Two of my daughters took swimming lessons at White's Beach. The side where Lakeview was had to close because of all the UNDER CURRENTS.I think there are natural springs UNDER the lake in Mendon. On the Whites Beach side they have it roped off as far as you can go out. Which isn't very far unless you own property on that side. Of which you can go out further. They also had an arts and craft along with the swimming lessons,in Mendon. Hi Allison - I've only heard it called Lake Nipmuc, but then again I've only lived here for 17 yrs.... Speaking of the Tafts - The other restaurant that's been here next to forever is the Cocke n'Kettle in Uxbridge. I work with a woman who is a Taft - she's 94 - yes, that's correct - 94! She told me that the Cocke n' Kettle was originally her uncle's farm. I want to say his name was Raymond? but that might not be correct. Her family descends from the Matthew Taft. She grew up on the family farm in Upton on Taft and East Streets. Her parents were Elmer Taft & Gladys Bruce. And don't forget Lowell's Restaurant - they are now re-opened at a new location - Rte 140, Mendon, in between Hopedale & Bellingham. I've never been to the old cemetery because I have no family there. After the snow is gone, I'll have to go over there and look at that Rawson stone. I've seen stones with photos attached - from the 1920's or so. I've never seen anything like you are describing here. Ok, I have been gone since 1970, and was 7 when I left but you all have brought back some terrific memories. I used to live in Hopedale and can remember the Redwood drive-in, fried clams, foot long hot dogs. The coffee ice cream!! Thanks for all of the memories, Mary Arizona --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze.
Maureen - I didn't know they had lifeguards up by the Lakeview end. The man who owned the amusement area was named Shawn Green - his wife was Sheila, and someone told me was a dancer. They don't seem to be around this area now. If someone finds him, let me know - he would be able to tell all the merry go round folks about the carousel. It was sold to another defunct amusement park - Pleasure Island in Wakefield. Millie Mitchells changed hands several times, but today it is still a restaurant - Alicante Mediterranean Grill - very good, but not a casual place like Millie's was. Sheryl, There were SO many big names that came up to Lakeview in Mendon. They even had a Special Dance party when all the guys from this area were going off to the VietNam war...IT was a LARGE going away party. What murder victim are you talking about? The one at the RED ROOSTER? I can still remember what their sign looked like. It was an extremely tall poll and had a large red rooster on top. After that was closed we went to the BRASS RAIL in Milford for the fried chicken. Or to MA GLOCKNERS in Bellingham >From: Sheryl Romasco <[email protected]> >To: "Maureen Cooley" <[email protected]> >Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] About Mendon, Mass. >Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2006 20:46:34 -0500 > >You forgot to mention that "Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs" and the Animals >played there. Lisa, That was my error. The Beach in Mendon that you took swimming lessons from is on Taft Street. That is called White's Beach. On the OTHER side of the lake is where the MYRIAD or FORMER name of Lakeview.(There use to be life gurads and swimming on BOTH sides) I forgot all bout that restaurant that buned down in there. I think it was owned by some people in Milford that had a dance studio. Lakeview and that restaurant And Milly Mitchel'sRestaurant was at another angle of the lake. There are all small houses all around the Lake >From: "Lisa Lepore" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Dear Old Mendon >Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2006 23:43:18 -0500 > >Maureen - > >We do have a town beach in Mendon. I never knew that coffee ice cream or maple walnut etc., were not universal flavors of ice-cream, wow! I love coffee ice cream and coffee milk and frappes. I have noticed that we here in N.E. have more stone walls than other areas of the country that I have traveled. We are like England and Ireland in use of field stone for walls and pasture land. My brother has been a stone/brick mason for years and he can make some beautiful walls of field stone, just walk around and pick the best and use it! I swear his talents go back to our Italian ancestors who were the first masons and built bridges and such in Italy. My kids loved walking the stone walls along Main Streets in town we lived and visited, with me holding their hands. That is a fond memory you brought back to me. Yes, those really were the good old days! Helen
Here's one more important thing I forgot to mention. Like I said I was raised mostly in Florida, from kindergarten to 8th grade, visiting both sets of grandparents was a real treat because of the COFFEE ICECREAM.....geez what a nice treat. Walnut flavored was 2nd. We didn't have grinders or frappes. We didn't have home delivered milk & cream. Who ever heard of basements in Florida....not me. It was a time to explore during my summer vacations in Whitinsville & Uxbridge. Still to this day I can remember walks on top of stonewalls while Gramma held my hand. It never occured to me who made all those stonewalls along Hill Street. Those were the days eh? Marcia
I was raised in the area and we walked from Mendon Hill(St.) to Lake Nipmuck to swim in the 50's, it was always Lake Nipmuck to us in that area. Helen in Milford

Hi All: I kep wondering about the "lake" as mentioned, and I am beginning to think that Nipmuck Pond is now called a lake? I've been to the Myriad Ballroom. I attended a Taft reunion there a few years ago, and of course a couple of times when I was little for a family gathering of some sort. I never did get to swim in Nipmuck Pond. I've traveled the back roads to and from Mendon and Uxbridge many times. I miss doing that, but then there's something to be said when moving. You lose things you like and gain new things to love. In my case, it a fantastic view of the Sandia Mountains here in Albuquerque, and the fact that it is high desert and no humidity. I can breathe much better. Here I am closer to the military base (I can look out the back of my apartment building and see Kirtland AFB). There is a gate at the end of my road. Living in Providence, I had a 31 mile drive to Newport to the Naval Base. No fresh clam chowder, baked scrod, nor fried clams here. Red Lobster and Long John Silvers doesn't count. I also miss stopping in at Old Cemetery in Mendon to visit Rev. Grindall 2 Rawson's grave. The stone is a portrait stone, one of a very few left in New England and has been in the cemetery since 1725. Regards, Alison Franks Archivist, Rawson Family Association
Maureen - We do have a town beach in Mendon. It's a small area off of Taft Ave on the Millville Rd end of the street. It's got a small sandy beach area, a bath house, and a snack stand. They've been giving swimming lessons there for years - I thought everyone in Mendon learned to swim there LOL The people who live on the lake do swim in it, but I understand there is quite a drop off in the area of the Ballroom - probably in other sections too - so I'm sure it's not wise to swim anywhere other than the beach area. Where's White's Pond? There used to be a merry go round at Silver Lake in Bellingham too.
