    3. Hi Marueen: Oh yes! I remember Nantasket Beach very well! In fact I will never forget it. My stepgrandmother took ,y sister and I on the train from Springfield to Boston, then over to the ferry to ride to Nantasket Beach for the day! Ut was very foggy in Boston Harbor, and lo and behold, the ferry that left ahead of us got stuck on a sandbar, and couldn't get loose. The boat kept swing back and forth, and with all of that going on, our boat was all but reluctant to go past the other one, but finally did! We had a wonderful time at the beach with riding on the rides, and having time to swim and of course a nice picnic lunch. The ferry personnel did tell us we would have to return to Boston by trolly. What we didn't know was, that the stuck ferry made the news and of course the plight of the boat was on the radio, and my Uxbridge grandmother heard it, and went into a tizzy thinking we were drowned! My father was to pick us up from the train station, so he calmly went about doing what he needed to do while the rest of the family was in terrible distress thanks to my grandmother, Mary Imogene 9 (Rawson) Gordon. My father kept telling her that until he went to the train station and discovered we were not on the train, he wasn't going to panic, so she might as well cease all the fuss too. The episode even made the paper! I remember seeing the picture of the ferry on the front page of the Springfield Paper. That had to have happened about 1948. I remember another time going to Purgatory Chasm, and my sister nearly got herself lost. One minute she was there where we were having our picnic lunch and the next minute poof! My grandmother was insistent that the bear carried her off! I don't think there were any bears, but my grandmother certainly thought that there were. My sister had seen a chipmunk and was bent on capturing it, so wander off to do just that! When we would have out annual family reunions in Uxbridge in the fall, we'd all go down into the Water Works to play ball after eating dinner. It was great - all the kids got to get a turn to hit the ball. G-Uncle Jeff lived across the road on Blackstone Street, way up on the hill, so we'd all walk down to enjoy the open area with nice grass. Uncle Jeff had a crochet set put up at one end, so those who didn't want to play (1 base -softball) could play crochet. I remember there just being 3 house up on the hill, across from the water works, one being owned by Uncle Jeff, and then further down Blackstone Street, nothing but woods all the way to Rte 122. Not anymore! It too has built up. After Uncle Jeff died, Aunt Pearl had a little house built on the road, and she sold the big house to her daughter Marcia (Rawson) Cormier. Marcia sold the house and moved to Florida, and Aunt Pearl having trouble seeing, went with Marcia. Marcia's son, Robert Cormier and his family live in the little house on the road, which he purchased from Aunt Pearl. One of the other second cousins lives in Milford. The rest of us are all over the map. A few still are in the Harrisville, RI area, and my sister in Providence. Alison

    3. John, I did get the brass ring in Mendon.. (about 8 times).I had to graduate to the Horses to do it...Then after I got it I went to Roger Williams Park in RI.( about 4 times I got the brass ring there)...They had all animals and rides everywhere. BUT does ANYONE remember Nantasket BEACH???? Now there was an Amusement Park. The Roller Coaster was called at the time "The world's largest" I had to ride that by myself for the 1st time. Then with friends....I had a babysitting job at that time...ANd I would get paid then take the oldest daughter Dawnette MCCausland to Nantastic Beach to swim in the Ocean and then to the rides across the street. There was a ride called "the Human Fly" I would make her stand with the spectators and watch me take that ride....It was a cylinder shape ride. You had to stand flat against the walls...Then it would spin and spin till gravity took over...THEN they dropped the floor out and you were STUCK against the walls like a fly...HENCE: The Human Fly.....Being stuck against the wall you could do just about anything...SO I would slowly move upside down till my head faced the bottom that dropped out...Then the would announce how much time you had to upright yourself and I would start to do that......After the ride was over...I would put her on all the kiddie rides and it was a good time...Nantasket Beach was HULL. At Lakeview in Mendon they also had a similar ride....It was I think the "swing"....There were 2 different ones....One was a swing that swung out higher and higher while the music played BUT the other...you stood against the wall and they straped you in...ANd it went round and round while you were standing...(just dizzy)straped in with all the music playing in the background. ANY WAY HULL is NOT Worcester County. Maureen >From: "John R. 3. As I read the history being told about Mendon, I truly hope someone takes the time to capture the stories. My family grew rocks in New Hampshire for 150 years+ after moving to Croydon from Sutton but we have no written history. Keep up the good work!

    3. Lisa..... Please do not forget when those cows were crossing the street(and there were quite a few of them. They had the RIGHT OF WAY.(I still have respect for animals in the street) Also when I was growing up there were NOT that many cars on the road like today. There probably was 1 car for every household a few people had 2 cars BUT not many. Also growing up in this area you would know if you went by Route 16. You were always stopped there at certain times. I cannot remember if they fed the cows at 4 pm or 5pm. SO two times a day they would cross Route 16. On their way over to graze and on the return for dinner and bedtime. (OCCASIONALLY 1 or 2 cows would end up in the road, and you just drove very slow around them) To remedy this at times when we did not want to sit and wait. At the light at ROUTE 16 and Main Street to the left, we would take a left turn onto Main Street...To the Little Center of Mendon. And take a right turn onto Maple Street. By doing this was a small connector road that went by the back of Lowell's Dairy and back onto Route 16. I lived in Mendon a few years at different times of my life. Right at the corner of Route 16 is the Former Mendon INN. Right now Mr. Lowell uses it as an ANTIQUE and used Center. My children and I lived in there. The History of that OLD INN in Mendon is: They rented out rooms to people passing through and a few lived there. One night after dark some men on horses came and wanted a few rooms for the evening. The maid answered the door and told them all the rooms are full. The men left and they headed over to Uxbridge to spend the night. The maid did not know she just turned away" President George Washington" and I think his wife was with them. They went over to UXBRIDGE and spent the night. There are little blue signs with George Washington on them all through the ROUTE he took to Uxbridge...And in front of the house they stayed in. That place was nice inside. The MENDON INN. Where I lived had the wide board floors and fireplaces in every room.In the kitchen (that was added on later) There was a very large built in cabinet. It was painted yellow. At the top of the cupboard was all squigly...I did not know what it was. I asked the owner at the time. Mr Ford, if I could take the paint off so I could see what it was. He said YES. It was an OAK Hoosier with stained glass windows on top. It had the original long thin tin flour blender inside one cupboard. And on the other side was a tin Grater. There was 2 small cupboards and 2 long cupboards and in the middle was another cupboard and a few shelves. It had the pull out metal table and that was what I used for making pies, etc. he stained glass was real old and was a blend of tan, cream, and brown. There was a built in China Hutch in the dining room.. When I took the paint off of that It had leather bindings with brass nails for hinges. At the windows were these thin little pulls. When I took the paint off. They were made of copper. The wood in the kitchen...There were only 2 beams. That came down to a natural color of the only paint they had at that time. A very light green STAIN. I lived on one side on the first floor. The other side was empty. The Fords lived upstairs and There was a HUGE kitchen a very large living room two small dens and about 8- 10 small bedrooms....The Fords sold it to another family and then Mr. Lowell bought it. 3. Hi, Although I joined this group with one request, not my ancestor related, I stayed on. The discussion about old Mendon is so interesting and I'm happy the administrator allows it. It is about history, which I love. It also helps in bringing back memories of one's own "place", wherever that may be. Thanks so much. Gloria Ishida ( in Japan)

    3. I have an article from the Milford Daily News about the Lowell's fire, and a little history about it. If anyone wants it, let me know. Lisa Lisa, Please send me the info of the fire. Gosh! I am realy getting a blast into the past here reading everyone messages on Mendon and Milford and such! I think its fantastic. I met my first hubby at Lowells dairy when it was the old building. Last time I was there was back in 2003 when my Dad had died. I have been living in Texas for 26 years now and its great that this subject has come up on the past about Mendon, Milford etc. I remember some but not all as I lived in Upton, Milford till I came here. Thanks for the Blast in to the Past, y'all. I am loving it all!! Joyce On Thu, 9 Mar 2006 01:29:23 -0500 "Lisa Lepore" <[email protected]> writes: > Maureen -

    3. That was Ten Pins.(Huge balls)Where Papa Gino's is now. Daverons Pharcmacy is still Run by the Daveron family. They are now located inside Stop & Shop in Milford. That sounds good there would be a bowling alley near here again. Besides the one in Franklin you would have to go to Woonsocker R.I. The same pharmcist from Romiglio is now the pharmicist in Walgreens. >From: "Lisa Lepore" <[email protected]> >To: "Maureen Cooley" <[email protected]> >Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Dear Old Mendon >Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2006 03:11:23 -0500 > >Romiglio's was still there when we moved here, as >well as Davoren's down the street. 3. Helen - I think the trolley was probably before the time of anyone here will remember - I think it came into Mendon from the center of Bellingham. It was replaced by the bus. Now, if you live out here you have to have a car, or walk. I don't know anything about the people who tried to keep Lakeview going. Their name was Green, and the woman was Sheila - I was told she had been a dancer, but I think I think she was a Rockette or something like that..... I know the old merry go round was sold in 1965, but the other amusements and the restaurant were there into the 1970's. My friend's brother worked there in the summer, and broke his leg on one of the rides. I'm sorry about your gram's house. It's sad to see these older homes taken down just so they can build new ones on top of each other. Makes no sense to me. The current uproar in town is the Comstock House in the center of Mendon. The woman who owns it has sold it to a bank, but they are going to take it down as they have determined it is too costly to renovate it. We would get all our stuff together and walk to Lakeview and swim, go in the boats get snacks there etc. > Someone else mentioned Lucier Dance school, one of the teachers was Dolly Lucier-she was a wonderful dancer. 3. Maureen - I can't imagine cows trying to cross Rte 16 now! When I moved out here, we started getting our milk at the Briggs farm in Medway - Shady Oaks on Winthrop St. Every day around 4 in the afternoon, they would bring the cows across the street and back to the barn - of course they brought them out to the field that way too, but I was never there in the AM. We used to go there a lot when my kids were small they got to milk the cows and see the newborn cows, then watch the entire milking process because they bottled the milk there too. Mr. Briggs called my older son 20 questions, and then when my younger son came along, he called him 40 questions. Part of the Mendon Gift Barn is the actual barn - but I didn't know it was connected to Lowell's cows. I'll have to ask my son - he went there once with cub scouts, and learned something about the way the barn was constructed - I'll ask him if he remembers. We still get our milk in glass bottles from Maple Leaf Dairy on North Ave, and we get our eggs at Ferrucci's farm which is in Milford. That's another place I used to take my kids - every year in the spring when they got the new chicks, and sometimes they were able to see them sort the eggs by size on this ancient machine. The new Lowell's is actually in Mendon, but it is right on the Bellingham line. Before Lowells moved in it was the Mendon Jade, a Chinese restaurant, and before that it was Ma's Pancakes. I think that restaurant had been there for quite a while, but I don't know how long. I have an article from the Milford Daily News about the Lowell's fire, and a little history about it. If anyone wants it, let me know. 3. Don, Mendon Airport is still there right off Route 16 on the way to UXBRIDGE....Also Hopedale has its own airport...I remember taking a ride or two through there when I was growing up... Actually my children and I was forced to move to OKLA....In the 70's and Someone there let me take over the controls and learn how to fly a 2 seater...We flew all around OKLA. and TEXAS...I had to run the controls and keep the (wings) at a steady level...We practiced taking off and landing about 30 times. I would NOT do it now BUT it was fun way back then.... 3. How I remember old Mendon. I have not seen Nipmuck Part since I was ten years old when my family moved to Georgia with one of the first "Yankee" mills to move south. I am 81 now so what I remember has been aged for 71 years. I remember my first airplane ride from the Mendon Airport. Yes, Mendon had an airport. Actually an air strip. Well, maybe a grass field just off the Uxbridge / Mendon road. I was five years old at the time because the barmstorm pilot required that all passengers must be five years old before they could go up in his open cockpit biplane. The flight schedule was simple - Saturdays and Sundays on warm dry days. Return trip was to where you took off from. I remember when we climbed into the front cockpit and the pilot got into the rear seat, that I was afraid that the pilot would not be able to see when we was going. When we go aloft and looked down I asked my father, "Is God up here?". Or at least that is what he told later. Actually I don't remember saying anything. At Nipmuck Park the thing I remember best was the merry-go-round. It had a slotted arm that was loaded with metal rings. If you stood on the edge of the wheel and held on to one of the vertical poles (and you were tall enough) you could stick your hand and perhaps snag a ring. If the ring was brass you got the next ride free - a wonderful prize. If the ring was plain old metal, you were suppose to throw it into a bin that had a big mesh bag to catch it. Then the rings were loaded back into the arm. The brass rings were bright and shiny so grabbers and spectators could see when a winner was in the slot. I believe that the streetcars quit running to Mendon in the late twenty's or early thirties when a flood on the Blackstone River took out the bridge and tracks that were never replaced. Since I remember these things from seventy years ago so well, how come I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning. Don Barnes - Winston Salem, NC P.S. 3. Hi Don: It's great that you do remember the "good old days"! As to what you had for breakfast - it probably wasn't anything you particularly liked, and thus why waste good memory time on stuff you don't like. I remember my grandmother telling me about the "rip" that they had for sledding! Much more fun than a toboggan or even a regular sled. She said the "rip" was faster with a good coating of wax on the runners. For those of you like me who don't think there is anything but coffee ice cream - put some chocolate pudding with it! Great stuff! Of course now in my case - being diabetic, I can have the sugar free chocolate pudding, but somehow, just two spoons of coffee ice cream isn't worth the planning like the Pentagon does for the treat. Forget the sugar free ice cream - worse than nasty. When I was talking about Old Cemetery in Mendon, the "barn" is supposed to be the original, and it is rumored that George 1 Aldrich was the original owner. Also, in Old Cemetery, just down over the hill is a large rock that has a plaque in memory of George 1 Aldrich. It is not known if he was buried in Old Cemetery or not, or just where he was buried. There are old very nice stones in Old Cemetery, and of course there are those that are broken, need to be repaired, and some dug up and reset. Many stones are missing, and some are no longer able to be read. Very sad, as the cemetery is small, yet certainly worth the while to do some serious repairing and renovating. I can remember walking in waste high grass/weeds some years back just trying to get to Rev. Grindall 2 Rawson's grave, and in the rain to boot! At least now the cemetery is mowed. There used to be a road that went off from Blackstone Street where Inman Hill Road is. I think it went at one time all the way over to Quisset Road which then goes out to Providence Street. I thought I heard my grandmother talk about a dam there of some sort, and also a swamp. Does anyone know about that? I didn't travel down that way from either end for fear of getting myself stuck or some such thing. Out both Blackstone Street and Providence Street, big homes are being built. Beautiful, but I still prefer the open meadows and fields, and the woods where there were woods. Still it is progress I guess. To think of all the old mills all over that are going to rack and ruin that could be utilized for many things. Sure it is costly, than building new, but if some of these mills are on the historical register, then perhaps federal monies could be gotten to renovate. Just think- they could be used as schools, housing for the elderly, and condos. Mendon's library is small, and certainly needs more room. A nice mill would be ideal. Thinking of this, the Mendon Historical Society will have the record room open I think this summer for research. There are some very interesting items that are in the museum, and many records that were in the museum are in the process of being moved to the records room. I also understand that some books have been purchased to go into the record room. The are some very old account books for lack of a better word, that in my opinion are a "goldmine" of information. A good project would be to get those transcribed and bound so they could be better utilized, and preserve the originals. Regards, Alison Franks Archivist, Rawson Family Association

    3. Oh, wrong direction, yes, now I know where you are talking about out Sutton Rd. I spent many hours of my childhood and young adulthood at Purgatory Chasm. When I was a kid, you could get refreshments there and have a great time wandering around, after I was married we took the family there and had cook-outs and lots of fun. Now my grandchildren go the and climb down in the chasms and have a great time there. I should check the history of it--I am 64 and it has been there as long as I can remember and my Mom says she went there as a kid also. Yes, going out to Sutton and the old turnpike is all big and beautiful homes that are very pricey . We used to go to the Blue Bird(I think the name was) to eat but it burned down recently. Do you remember that place? Helen

    3. Would that be where the West Hill Dam is now? It is kind of out in the woods, it is between Hartford Ave. and the road that Miscoe is on going into Mendon(I can't remember the name of the street.) I am in Whitinsville and Northbridge all the time , my brother and my niece both live there and I go to the Salvation Army Thrift store there to buys used books. They have built many big and beautiful homes all in that area and are still building. There is a lot of water in the area and I suppose that is why so many Mills were built over that way. Some of those old mill buildings are really nice condo's and elderly housing now. A good way to use the big buildings. Helen

    3. Thanks Alison - When the weather warms up for good, I'll go over and take a look at the head stone. Sounds pretty unusual for the time. We still have some snow on the ground. My friend Gladys tells me that Matthew Taft and Robert Taft were brothers, but they were referred to as the Irish Tafts and the English Tafts, because when they came to the US, one left from Ireland and the other left from England. I don't know if they have been proven to be related, or if this is still a question. Nowadays with DNA, I'm sure that question could be answered pretty easily. Gladys had a cousin, Marjorie [I think] who was involved in the Taft Family Assoc. at one time. 3. Lisa its true...I would want to forget that. The P. Eugene Casey pool was originally at Fino Field in Milford. I rode my bicycle there for years. The one that is near Shaws right now was built to replace it. ALSO where Iandoli's market was....It was originally built for MacCrackens market. When they first opened....They had an attraction to get the shoppers in...THE WORLDS TALLEST MAN= it was a man on very HIGH STILTS who walked around the parking lot for the first week. ALSO there was a BOWLING alley there. It was owned by the PAPELIANS. (She also brought bands in...listen to live music while you bowled.)..IT was closed quite a few years ago but the name of that whole shopping center was Pappelians Shopping center. They brought it down(bowling) to make Shaws Larger and of cource they kept what is now Walgreens.(That was called at the time Romiglio's Pharmancy. Because the owner was a pharmicist and a Romiglio Maureen >From: "Lisa Lepore" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Dear Old Mendon >Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2006 22:02:44 -0500 > >Maureen - > >There's one memory you probably would want to >forget!
