Hi John - Yes, I guess the ballrooms were another feature of all these amusement areas. I know there were ballrooms at Crescent Park and Rocky Point. Helen mentioned Norumbega - that one was in Newton, MA, and at one time there was an amusement area there too. I think the Marriot hotel is on that spot now. Thank you for the correction. It was one of my aunts that said one of his sons made such a mess of that place...I will tell her it was a son-in-law that made the mess.I just went by there yesterday because my daughter and I had breakfast at the International House of Pancakes. I did not even notice any BUILDING 19 signs. Thank you for the INFO. Thats what it was!! Harry's Sandwhich stand with a smaller sign that said Stand of 1,000 sandwhiches. It was actually across the street from White City Amusement Park.By the way this is the corner of ROUTE 9. The International House of Pancakes is right where Harry's use to. Across the street BUT the same siade as the Amusement Park. Actually Across the other side of the street and down a little way was the Famous SPAGS. That is still there but it is run by the original owners son and he changed quite a few things. That was a beautiful post card of the Amusement Park. When I was growing up there use to be hundreds of sail boat in that water on both side of Route 9 >From: "Lisa Lepore" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Dear Old Mendon >Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2006 00:10:03 -0500 > >I never went to White City - I just knew it was there. >The info I sent earlier came from a booklet I have about >Jolly Cholly's - I got it from the N. I spent many days at White City and rode everything from the Merry-go-round to the Bullet, also rides up and down Lake Quinsigamond in the old boats that gave rides. In the late 50's they had lots of good groups there like Danny and the Juniors (I can't remember the other names of who I saw) and we went there with our dates. I don't remember any sandwich place there either. The White City Diner and Harry's were close by and Harry's sold every kind of sandwich and "grinder" you could think of. Even after I was married and lived in Westboro, we went to Worcester or Shrewsbury to grocery shop and everytime we stopped and got grinders to take home from Harry's. It was a sad time when they tore White City down, it had been a place of great fun for many families in the area. We took our children to Whalom Park and they had a rollercoaster they could ride but the child had to be a certain height before they could ride it. We also went to Norumbega(spelling?) Park to feed the ducks on Sundays--now I am not sure what town it was in but it was near Waltham and that area. The good old days before kids hung idle at the Malls! We always had things to do and places to go that were fun! Helen
Looking for info on a Patrick POWER who came to Mass. from Ireland by 1871. HIs daughter, Sarah "Sadie" Helen POWER was born in the USA about 1872. They ended up in Milford, Milbury, Milltown??? I wish I knew which one. I am told it was in Worcester County, but that still didn't narrow it down a lot. Sadie (Sarah Helen) married about 1888 to Frederick Taylor. They had 5 children who all grew up in Worcester City. Any help on POWER family would be greatly appreciated. I never went to White City - I just knew it was there. The info I sent earlier came from a booklet I have about Jolly Cholly's - I got it from the N. Attleboro Historical Society. I haven't found anything about the stand of 1000 sandwiches, but I did find a site with people's memories of White City and the area. A couple of them mention the White City Diner, across the street with great meatball sandwiches. Also mentioned was Harry's Famous Pastrami which was also across the street. http://www.worcestermass.com/places/whitecity.shtml Lisa ----- Original Message ----- From: Maureen Cooley To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2006 8:34 PM Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Dear Old Mendon You know what Listers and Lisa.....There was a place to get a sandwhich at White City called: THE STAND of 1,000 sandwhiches.....They had EVERY COMBINATION of ANY sandwhich you ever wanted your whole life.....IT was GREAT!!!!Let me know.....Mauren Maureen >From: "Lisa Lepore" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [MAWORCES] Dear Old Mendon >Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2006 19:37:25 -0500 > >Maureen - > >White City was managed by a woman named Helen - first >woman in the US to manage an amusement park, apparently. >She married Charles Nasif, who started Jolly Cholly's. Hello Cheryl, Thanks for the lookup. The inaccurate information makes me wonder if this is really my grandmother. The spelling "Francis" is the same as the 1908 passenger list, but her parents were both Irish and her age is off by four years. Undoubtedly, the informant could have been engaged in guesswork. Also, my grandmother was known to embellish the truth to fit her whims. Thank you again, Diane in So. Maureen - White City was managed by a woman named Helen - first woman in the US to manage an amusement park, apparently. She married Charles Nasif, who started Jolly Cholly's. Jolly started as the Dairy Bar in 1954. He added miniature golf in 1958, and the Funland in 1959. I think the White City carousel only had horses. The merry go rounds with other animals are called Menagerie carousels. The one at Goddard Park was was one, and the one at Slater Park is one. The one at Goddard park was moved there from Rocky Point - you might remember the zebra from there. Speaking of hospitals, can anyone tell me anything about the Winchendon Infirmary? A relative I'm tracking is listed as an "inmate" there in the 1930 census. There are indications of some sort of problem (he was "at home" at age 21 in the 1880 census, when siblings as young as 12 were working in mills). Thanks, Joe Joseph E. This is ABOUT the BLIZZARD of 1978. When it first started snowing it was predicted as a regular snow storm. The ONLY problem was it just would NOT stop snowing. Then it picked up quite a bit of speed....There were times when it was a complete "WHITE OUT CONDITIONS"(This would be snowing so hard you could not SEE what was in front of you)The Milford Daily News had a picture on the FRONT page that sometimes in a July HEAT WAVE they would publish again. The picture shows an area of Milford and ROUTE 495,DURING what is called "THE GREAT BLIZZARD" the snow was coming down so fast that you did not have time to judge if you should be traveling in it. I had been on ROUTE 495 just PRIOR to the STANDSTILL.WHAT happened was if the car in front of you stalled OR could GO no further, you had to drive around them to continue. BUT very soon the snow was up to the TOP of your TIRES.AND there was a GREAT STANDSTILL. I made it home from Cushing Hospital that night...I had just worked a double shift. BUT the next morning....I had to climb out a kitchen window with a shovel because the snow COVERED the WHOLE doorway. You could not get out the door. When I looked in the driveway, you could not even see a car. The snow was that deep...They kept announcing on the radio and TV that CARS were NOT allowed on the roads. You can only walk to where you are going...You also had to clear the snow OFF your car BEFORE they would come and PLOW the streets. Because they did not want to damage any cars. The GOV at the time decalred it a FULL EMERGENCY situation....Actually I do not even know how I made it home because everyone I knew that was on the road the same time as I was did NOT make it home. The next day was when they brought me to CUSHING on the snowmobiles. People WERE pretty friendly during this time BECAUSE everyone had to WALK and you actually were talking to people. When you drive in the car you might wave BUT now everyone was talking to each other. The ONLy vehicles that were allowed on the roads were the plows and any EMERGENCY VEHICLES.... What happened in the GROCERY store was UNbelievable.....There was ALL empty shelves. And the radio would annnounce where to go for food or Milk and you would get there and it was already gone. It was a panic situation for OVER 2 weeks....Peolpe were BUYING ten or twelve of EVERYTHING so the shelves were always EMPTY. This is about Cushing Hospital. They tore down the barracks Type housing that was Cushing Hospital about five years ago. In its STEAD is a NEW ASSISTED LIVING QUARTERS. I drove through there and THEY have ALSO built many small houses in the back, where there use to be all the grassy grounds that went with CUSHING HOSPITAL. Hi, I am new to this list and find it interesting the conversation about the Mental hospitals. I belong to another list on Oregon and they are talking about the same thing. I have a genealogical question: Does anyone know anything about the Aaron Gary Family that lived in the Lancaster area during the Revolutionary War? Thanks, Dale in California

In Uxbridge, Ma. they had a go cart place. It also had the wooden tracks you drove on. This place also had small real cars to drive.....That is where I got alot of training for a real car(age about 8 or9 till about 14. The track is still there BUT this area is now being used by DIRT BIKERS. The other place I got most of my drving experience from was a Place called WHITE CITY in Shrewsbury. There was a very large amusement park there. My dad started, that I can remember, I was about age 2. And there was an ARCADE and inside this arcade was a machine with a steering wheel and in front of you was a screen....with a car traveling on the road. The only other thing there was a gas pedal....My dad would work the gas pedal at various speeds and I HAD to keep the car within the marked lanes. Sometimes he would FLOOR IT!! And I would say...NO! not so fast....He said I had to learn to keep the car on the road at ALL SPEEDS. The name WHITE CITY is still up there....It has changed about 4 times since I was growing up.They tore down the amusement park in the 1960's They made a very large PLAZA and had a Movie Cinama. It was the first in the area to offer about 4 different movies at the same time. That was on one end of it. The other end had a Bradlee's Store. If you go by there NOW it has a SHAWS SUPERMARKET Friendley's Ice Cream and a BUGABOO CREEK.... there are a few smaller stores as well. They tore the theater down about 5 years ago to add the BUGABOO CREEK....This is a chain of a steak house from I think Canada? White City had a really nice Carousel also. I remember they had a very light color PURPLE horses. It was the first time I saw the different color. I think Mendon just had white tan and brown color horses. I cannot remember which park ALSO had Zebra with the HORSES....That might have been WHITE CITY Also? I lived in Boston during the blizzard, but I seem to remember someone telling me that there was a woman who was trapped & buried in her car in Milford - I think she got out??? If people did not see this storm, there's really no way they can fully understand how much snow there was. The one good thing is it brought out the goodness in people. My father's uncle had made a delivery to the east side of Providence, and got stuck there. A young couple, perfect strangers, took him in. Not only did they take him in, they walked to a pharmacy in order to get the medication my uncle needed. He stayed at their house for 3 days I think, before being picked up by his son in law, who had to get there by snow mobile. All this in tiny little Providence. I bought a book "The Blizzard of 78" by Michael Tougias pub. On Cape Publications Lots of photos from all over Massachusetts. I found it on line just a couple of years ago. My husband's aunt lived in Chicago. All she knew was what she saw on the Today Show - all those houses on the Cape that were being swept into the ocean. She called at 7 AM to make sure we were still living - poor woman was almost hysterical, and we didn't even know it had gotten that bad.
