    1. Records Access Panel Discussion - April 22 Marlborough MA
    2. Sharon Sergeant
    3. Hello On April 22, the Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) Annual Meeting and Seminar will include a panel discussion on Records Access issues and legislation across the nation. Other topics at this MGC event provide great research methodology and resources, but the issue of records access trends is an item that may trump many other research dilemnas. Pending records access closure incentives and proposed legislation has been reported in the following states: AK, CO, FL, IL, IN, KY, MA, MI, MO, NE, NH, NJ, PA, RI, SD, VT, WI, WY. Many pending legislative moves could also remove Vital Record substitutes like the WW II enlistment (and more recent conflict) online databases, the Social Security Death Index or publications like town and city directories and reports, and many other corroborating or defining sources for research. See further details below. Sharon Sergeant Director of Programs, Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) www.massgencouncil.org ===================================================================== THE MASSACHUSETTS GENEALOGICAL COUNCIL Annual Meeting and Seminar Saturday, April 22, 2006 The Conference Center at Marlborough, Massachusetts http://www.massgencouncil.org General Information: Coffee, tea, soft drinks, and water will be available in the lobby all day at no charge. A coatroom is provided just beside the Auditorium. Vendors selling books and materials of genealogical interest will be open from about 8:00am to 3:30pm. Questions: contact Sharon Sergeant, Program Chair, [email protected] 781-209-8861 8:00am to 10:30am Registration Desk open. Continental breakfast (coffee, tea, juice, pastries, muffins, bagels) will be served and is included in the registration fee. 9:00am to 9:45am MGC Annual Meeting 10:00am to 11:00am Researching “Birds of a Feather”: How Prosopography, Cluster Studies, and Record Linkage Techniques Can Help Put New Leaves On Your Family Tree. Meldon J. Wolfgang introduces genealogists and family historians to several useful techniques developed and used by researchers in other academic disciplines—medieval historians, epidemiologists and sociologists, to name a few—that may help dismantle those “brick walls”. Learn the techniques that other professionals use to reconstruct historic communities, former neighborhoods and extended families and discover how uncovering the network of relationships and patterns in your ancestors' lives can breathe new life—and real results—into your research. http://www.jonathansheppardbooks.com [Prosopography is an independent science of social history embracing genealogy, onomastics and demography.] 11:15am to 12:15pm Federal and State Regulations Affecting Access to Records. Panel discussion concerning proposed federal and state regulations affecting access to birth, marriage and death records. As the result of the passage of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, some state officials are under the impression that they are required to close vital records to researchers. This panel will discuss both the intent and scope of the Federal law, as well as the jurisdiction of the states. This is a very important issue and is a concern to all genealogists. Specific discussions will include not only New England states, but pending legislation in the midwest, New Jersey and other states that may fall into this area of legislative mishap. Legislators, as well as federal, local and state records officials are invited to answer questions about these issues. 12:15pm to 1:30pm Full Buffet Lunch included. Vendors Open. Join invited guests (legislators, local and state records officials) and members of the Association of Professional Genealogists for discussion topic tables at lunch. [Note: please indicate on your registration form if you need a special meal.] 1:30pm to 3:00pm Breakout Sessions. Participants can choose between two lectures, as well as genealogy society and vendor presentations. **Sleuthing in the Stacks: Using Uncommon Resources to Uncover Genealogical Clues. Meldon J. Wolfgang directs the researcher to reference tools and finding aids that can be used by genealogists who have come up against a “brick wall” in their research. References used by professionals in other research disciplines are explored, and suggestions given for conducting a secondary literature search and using resources not common to genealogists. www.jonathansheppardbooks.com **Beyond the Census: Local History in Federal Records. 3. Hi All: The message below is for any/all on the Worcester List. Susan says she has tried to post the message and it won't go through. Maybe there is someone who can help her. I cannot since I don't live close enough to do the looking. Thanks, Alison Franks Archivist, Rawson Family Association -----Original Message----- From: Susan Hedeen [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, April 03, 2006 2:05 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Help Land records I am a member of the MAWorcester list and have seen your name a lot in helping direct people to resources. I live in Virginia. I am looking for someone interested in looking for some land records in Worcester Co. I believe they are at the registry of deeds on Main Street in Worcester; however, I am uncertain of that. The land was owned by _*Timothy Sewell*_ at the time of his death (with will) in _*1753.*_ He was described in the will as a resident of Mendon, Worcester Co., MA and Cumberland, Providence Co., RI. _/*Incidently, the name Sewell is spelled several different ways in both the will and the probates (ie: Sewell, Sewall, Sewel, Sewil, Shewil--*/_*thus even in the land records it may be spelled variously).* He owned approximately 80 acres of land, house, out buildings, personal property, a servant or slave "my negro, Cesar", and a gun. The estate and guardianship for 2 minor children Joseph & Anna were also probated. The sole executrix was Katherine Sewell who in 1754 while the probating was in process married Anthony Chase. I have copy of the will and the probates. I am looking now for the land records noted in the will; who the grantors were and who the grantees were. Heirs listed in the will were _*Wife, Bridget* _(this was his 2nd wife and they were married 30 June 1735. Bridget was the mother of Joseph & Anna ages 15 & 13 at the time of his death) who was to receive 1/3 of the total estate plus the negro, Cesar until Joseph came of 21 years; the balance was to be equally divided among his living children ( most who were born of Elizabeth Jeffrey Sewell whom he married in Lynn 1716): _*John Sewell, Elizabeth Gibson, Margaret Sherman, Katherine Sewell, Rebekah Sewell, Joseph Sewell and Anna Sewell.*_ _*At 21 years Joseph was to receive the negro, Cesar and Timothy's gun.*_ Elizabeth d/o Elizabeth & Timothy married Eleanah Gibson; Margaret d/o Elizabeth & Timothy married Elkanah Sherman; Katherine d/o Elizabeth & Timothy married Anthony Chase; Anna d/o Bridget & Timothy married William Soule. Obviously, Timothy Jr, Sarah and their mother Elizabeth Jeffrey were no longer alive at the time of Timothy's will--Elizabeth certainly dead prior to his 2nd marriage in 1735. Anyone who would be so kind to help me in this quest will be in my debt. Thankyou...Susan -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. I'm pretty sure that we have the same family. The information I have was given to some member of the Norris family in Indiana by the family of Eleanor Bechta from Holyoke, MA. The info. has Albert and Calvin assessed a poll tax in 1874 and 1876, and none in 1879. In 1886 Albert was assessed a poll tax. Next item on the info.shee has the name of Matilda C. Norris. In 1888 Matilda was listed as residing on Silver Lake St and Albert C. Norris at Pinedale. I understand that the two localities are very close. Thank you for the information. He had quite a few brothers and sisters in Athol, could these be the related families that took the children in? It also appears that Albert Norris (the father) may have remarried and was living in Enfield, Grafton, New Hampshire in the 1900 census. Cheryl

At the time of her death they had 5 children (Albert C., Herbert, Alice Francis, Minnie and John) who were taken to the Alms House in Athol, MA on 11/5/1888. Minnie was removed on 11/20/1888 and Albert on 4/31/1891. The other three children were taken to the Home for Little Wanderers and later placed on an Orphan Train. They were raised by three related families in Kosciusko Co., IN; were never adopted and knew they were brothers and sister. My questions: How did Ellen die? What happened to Albert and the son who was taken back? What happened to Minnie? What other information is available? John was my husband's grandfather. Flora
