    3. Hi Jackie, I did a quick search on NewspaperArchive.com for Fitchburg and got a few hits but no obituary. There was an A.H. Dumas who had a painting, papering and other small jobs on Wanoosnock Rd. in Fitchburg. The classified ads ran in 1937 and 1938. He may have died in 1948 because I came a probate notice for his estate on 20 December 1948 in the Fitchburg Sentinel. Here is the text... To all persons interested in the estate of Arthur H. Dumas, late of Fitchburg, in said County deceased. A petition has been presented to said Court for probate of a certain instrument purporting to be the last will of said deceased by Majorie Lamothe, of Leominster, in said County, praying that she be appointed executrix thereof, without giving surety on her bond... etc... legalese Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Presley" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 06, 2006 2:29 PM Subject: [MAWORCES] Help in Fitchburg, please >I am looking for the date of death/burial date for ARTHUR HARRISON DUMAS >who > was alive in 1930 in Fitchburg, born Nov. 1888. 2. AGFranks
    3. Good Evening All: I am sending this information about the Mendon Historical Society Meeting which will be held Thursday Evening 11 May 2006 at 6:30 pm at the Mendon Senior Center on Providence Road in Mendon. Prior to the meeting, there will be a showing of a very old stage curtain which was recently found on the 3d floor of the Town Hall during Renovations. During the meeting a discussion will be held on what to do with the curtain. Also on display as the evening program will be the 300th Anniversary Mendon Quilt which has many notable names included on it. There will be light refreshments after the meeting. Please attend and bring a friend with you. Anyone who is going, it would be nice to have a list of the names that are on the quilt posted to the lists! Any volunteers to do this? I would do it, but I am a bit too far away to even attend the meeting, though I wish I could. 3. I have the Book of grave listing for Pine Grove Cemetery, Milford Ma. If there is anyone of you that need to check out a name in there. I'd be happy to check for you. I bought it because of my parents are buried there along with other ancestors But the cemetery dates way back to the 1700s. It has the names and sections, lot #s, Relation Birth and death dates that are on the stones. I was surprised to see that there are 2 wives in some graves along with the husband as both 1st and 2rd wives were buried in the same lot. I'm not sure I would like that, but it happens! Hahahaha!! 2. Hi Lisa, I remember the farm being most of the land along both sides of Johnson Road and on one side it stretched back to Cedar Swamp Pond and on the other side I am not sure how deep the land was. I think the land stretched down to Chocolog Road and up to Aldritch Hill except for a spot on the south side. The house was behind and to the left of the cemetery as you faced the cemetery. William and Sophia (Johannson changed to) Johnson (my great grandparents) bought the "farm" and moved there from Millville. He was a Swede/Fin and a vulcanizer at the rubber shop. He immigrated from Purtim, Vassa, Finland. I found a cemetery on the topozone map right where you said in your message. It is just marked *cem*, with no name. The map shows a few cemeteries in this area. One on Chocolog just after Chestnut and before Johnson Road, then another on Chocolog just past the intersection of Johnson Rd. Another one on Glendale, between Aldrich & the intersection of Elmdale. Glendale turns into Ironmine Road where there are 3 more cemeteries marked in the section between Ironstone Road and Mount Pleasant Road. All of these cemeteries are just marked *cem* so they must be small family type lots. There are other cemeteries with names in this map series, so they must be the larger ones. In RI there is a project that's been going on since the 1970's to locate & document all the historical cemeteries in the State. Is there anything like this project in MA, or is it all done on an individual city/town basis. 2. AGFranks
    3. Good Morning Jon: Wherever you found those births for Preserved and Mary as far as Douglas is concerned, I have a news flash - not recorded there. The book of vitals from 1719 - 1843 did not get to Boston to be included in the Douglas Vital Records! Why - who knows. Anyway this is the story: I discovered this and set about extracting all the vitals of Douglas from 1719 to 1843 that did not appear in the printed book. Nothing for Preserved and Mary. However - in the printed book on page 32, is an entry Green, ____, son of Preserved and Mary b. 24 Mar 1845. I saw a quarterly of the RI Roots Mar-Jun 1998 pg 124 that this child was Byron Van Buren Green. In the Douglas vital records (printed book) on pg 109 it states that Preserved [Preserved S. in intention] and POLLY Newton were married 20 Sep 1829. Mary/Molly/Polly are all interchangeable. As far as the Upton vital records are concerned - what you see in the printed book is what you get. However, here is another thing. The original records that went to Boston to be printed, disappeared. What happened to them who knows. When I was able to see the Upton vital records on line at NEHGS, I ran the births from 1841-1850 against the book, and of the 45 entries for that time period, only 12 are in the book! The town clerk is aware of this because I called her on the phone and told her about it. Regards, Alison Franks Archivist, Rawson Family Association

    3. Lisa, When I lived at what is now the Mendon Antique Center. The Old Mendon Inn. This was at 4 Main Street, Mendon. The big brown house that is right next to it was where Chief Grady use to live.He was a patrolman then. He retired about 3 years ago. I see him all the time. He always directs traffic jams around road construction sites in this whole area. He knows a lot of Mendon's History. He may be able to tell you lots of things.I have a calendar somewhere here that Mendon put out a few years back. Every month has a different picture from Mendon's past. It even had the ROTUNDA picture for one of the month's. Also a diner that was on ROUTE 16 in Mendon, called BETTY"S It was Yellow and Blue. There on the back road at the intesection of the Westboro Road and Hopkington Road,I go straight across to the Westboro Road. About a couple miles up on the left is North Avenue in Upton. At that intersection there is a small cemetery on the left. There is no name on that one either. I have thought about getting out but it is in an area with(I thought at the time).. loaded with mosquitoes. I do not even know if it is an American Indian Cemetery. Would you be able to look at your map and see what the family name is at this one? 1. Cemetery Story
    2. With all this talk about cemeteries, especially overgrown ones, I just have to tell you my cemetery story! A number of years ago, I made a tour of some ancestral grounds in MO/KS area. I was visiting a third cousin in St. Joseph, MO. She and her husband took me around to various ancestral homesteads and cemeteries. One of these was a private cemetery, formerly on land owned by my Russell family. The property has changed hands several times since then, so we don't know who did it, but one of the property owners wanted to get rid of the cemetery so he took all the larger stones and threw them over the line fence into a wooded area of the neighboring property! Everything else got plowed under :~(( Well, Rosie and Harold had already found these stones (after much detective work), so they got permission from one property owner to drive onto and park on his property and from the other to go over the fence to see the stones on his property -- one of which was my second great grandfather! We had to climb a fence covered with poison ivy and wade through all sorts of other vegetation -- but I saw and photographed all the stones -- some of which had been pieced together by Rosie and Harold on their previous visit. Here's the great part... The next day, we went to the Pattee House Museum in St. Joseph, MO. They have collections of all sorts of things there. After I had seen everything, I got an idea and I said, "Do you suppose they would like to have some tombstones for their collection?" Rosie knew just what I was thinking -- and, about then, along came the curator! We told him about the stones and he thought it was a great idea. Eventually, all the proper permissions were granted and the museum truck met Rosie and Harold at the site and picked up the stones. They have restored them completely and have set them up on a little piece of lawn in the side yard of the museum! My second great grandfather and others in the family now have a wonderful new resting place! If you are ever in St. Joseph, go see them! Sue Susan M.
