DNA and DAR By Nancy Hattaway Miller [email protected] For DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) you not only have to prove a blood relationship, you have to prove legitimacy at each step along the way. Since DNA doesn't come with marriage licenses attached, I doubt it would be accepted as evidence for a lineage society, at least one with the legitimacy requirement. An interesting question, which more clearly focuses on whether or not these venerable societies will embrace new technology would be: If a lineage is proven on paper, but a DNA test casts doubt, will they close that line? [Editor's Note: The proof of legal and lawful marriages has not been required by DAR since 3 Feb. 1996, but the other question probably will have to be addressed by hereditary societies at some point.]
