For four months we lived in a place named Lance, PA. The people there (population about 450) were very nice - you could leave your door open and come home to find home made bread or fresh veggies someone had left for you. As for rolling up the streets - well, first of all you had to drive to a neighboring town - bout 14 miles - to find a convenience store. A decent grocery store was an hour's drive - in good weather. But even the town with the decent grocery store closed everything up by 8 or 9 pm. It was quite an interesting experience - very relaxing and you do adjust. On the other hand, when we first moved from San Antonio to a small upstate New York town back in 1966, the people were not friendly and it was awful. I have such horrible feelings for the experience I still get very angry just thinking about it. I'd say check it out before making the commitment - it could be wonderful or unlivable.
