    1. [MAUPIN-CHAT] Question
    2. When it lists someones occupation on the 1850 census as "collier" what does that mean that he does? Am hoping Pat or someone can answer this for me. Vicki

    2. Jackie, I had low self-esteem too for years and years. I didn't really get to know my grandfather because of divorce and bitter feelings until my mother realized it wasn't all his fault. Anyway all this research makes me feel closer to and I exalt in telling my sons how their ancestors helped settled this country and win independence. They had low self esteem too and this helps them to realize their were good, intelligent people that contributed to their genes. Norma

The man would be from the family of Thomas Maupin~Judith Cobb/Cobbs. Sandi

I sure learned to appreciate my ancestors for all they went through in the old days. I have so many stories on them and when reading I'm in awe over how soft we've become. Just thinking about living in hot and humid weather and the women wearing those long dresses, hand washing clothes, cooking from scratch, and some having to make all the clothes all in the family wore, beside having to tote a gun at all times. WOW! Sandi

    2. I am not sure how to word this, but here it goes. I grew up not knowing but a few family member totally. I knew nothing past my Grandmother Brumett. I guess you would say I grew up feeling like I was worth not much. Like I was just dropped on this earth. Learning of my families challenges and success's, and the fact that the same blood runs through my veins makes me feel as if there is a reason for being here and I can do more than I first thought. Sounds silly when you write it, but not sure how else to put it. The family search makes them real to me and a part of the history they worked so hard in. Jackie

I have sent after copies and have found several relatives eligible. >> Jackie: I'm eligible for the DAR. I'm just not interested in joining. Much of our old family history was gained by cousins (GARRARD) who only wanted to prove they were eligible to join the DAR and did. Am glad they gave all that information to our section of the family. What I don't understand about all the work these cousins went to is why that didn't get them hooked on doing family genealogy???? I was hooked by a Maupin cousin's wife. I had never heard of the Maupin family when this gal snail mailed me. She called my mother and got my address. I called my mother and asked who in the world this gal was and were we related. I started gathering family information for this gal and got really interested in it all and the rest is history! Sandi

    2. Sandi. As we were talking abut the Dar and other organizations the other day, with the Osbornes there is already papers or the DAR. I have sent after copies and have found several relatives eligible. The Virginia site has a mass of info on them that I have just discovered, haven't checked it out yet. You may look into it as well. For example, a computer room that might double as an exercise room. Then, we need a sewing room that could double as a laundry room and storage room. I have my bicycle in my computer room because it is too hot in the garage for it. The rubber in the tires and tubes and the foam in the saddle all deteriorate in the summer heat. Who needs a dining room? We hardly ever use it! We don't have a formal living room.... Pat >> My home is one of those small cape cod homes. We had hoped to get a bigger place, but never did, now the kids are all grown up. we could use a dining room for the Holidays, the inside Holidays are here. The outside ones are at my Sons. I set up tables in different rooms to accommodate everyone and yet we limit who we have. Jackie

Then, believe it or not, he places them in the same place each month so we know where they are to make the payments. I have 16 binders on my Fitzpatrick family which includes 7 on the Fitzpatrick/Maupin section. I have 3 binders for my Garrard family, 3 binders for my other Maupins, children of John D.~Mary Jane Williams. Have 2 binders for the Osborne section less the Maupin/Osbornes, etc.. Now, if I didn't have all those 2 inch binders to hold many documents, letters, photos, etc., (in page protectors) can you imagine the added mess? I have stacks of stuff that I'm going to put in binders. I have a 3 drawer commercial file but that is in the garage since I have no room for it in the house so I won't put anything in it. Sandi

That is the fault that caused the 1994 Northridge big ones. That 1994 quake took down our cinderblock wall, here and there on all three sides of the back yard. Anyway, we had a few shakers for several days, at least that we felt. I heard some people down in Long Beach CA even felt that first one. Sandi
