Spring is Virginia at its finest, so a visit to Williamsburg will be a wonderful trip. The Taliaferro-Cole House was the Maupin home and Market Square Tavern on Duke of Gloucester St. was the home of Gabriel Maupin (2) who was also Keeper of the Magazine, which is next door, during the Revolutionary War. You can visit Chownings Tavern and view Market Square Tavern which is across the street. There are few original homes and buildings remaining in Williamsburg since most are replications, but both of these Maupin homes are among the few remaining originals. If your travels should take you to the Charlottesville, VA area, White Hall, another Maupin home, remains also with a Maupin Country Store still in operation. You will find it located on Virginia state maps near Earlysville, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is most unusual for this many 18th century homes from a family to be in existence and in such good repair, so don't forget your cameras! Rose Marie Martin Culpeper, VA 22701 [email protected]
