Hi cousins, Here are my first results on the cartography of the name Maupin (and alternate orthographs) for France. I am planning a few maps in the near future at the "commune level", the basic geographical scale in France. France > Regions > Departements > Communes. In the following list you will find the number of Maupins (and the number of similar patronyms) at the regional scale (in capital letters ALSACE) and also at the departemental level (preceded by the official number of this departement). At this point some patterns are evidents : 1) There is in France at least 5 "Maupin" patronyms : Maupin, Mopin, Maupain, Mauppin, Meaupin all with the same pronounciation (a purist like will find littles differences by most of people in France will not notice them). 2) The spatial patterns are not at ramdom. Except Paris which is a special case, strong clusters appear in some regions like Picardie, Poitou-Charentes and Nord-Pas-deCalais and even more concentrated cluster are found in some departements like CHARENTE MARITIME, VIENNE, OISE, SOMME and HAUTE-MARNE. 3) Spatial pattern for alternate patronyms are not at ramdom either. Maupain is found in the west of france almost excusively, there is a very important cluster of Maupin in the SOMME departement. 4) Maupins are absent of certain areas : Auvergne, even though an aunt told me that most be the original Maupin Country, Corse, DOM (overseas territories), Midi-Pyrennees (look at all those zeroes). I will take this research and mapping as a basis and practice for the bigger USGS Mapping project.
