I remember at the Williamsburg Reunion, Dorothy had a French teacher there (I think that she was a Maupin) and she said that the correct pronunciation Mo-peen. Also, it was a Williamsburg that I discovered from a speaker that the pin in the name is because they lived in a pine forest. Interesting, no?
_____________________________ One more note: When I was in college, I was counted absent for a week because I didn't answer roll-call when the professor called for "Mo-pan" with the accent on "pan" - Later he said it should be pronounced to rhyme with Chopin. - Max Gail Maupin, Rolla Missouri. ___________________________________________ >John & Linda Noel wrote: > > > > Moppen looks like it might be a phonetic spelling variation of the French > > pronunciation. > > A French woman, about 45 years ago, addressed my mother as Mrs. Maupin and > > pronounced Maupin as mo-peene.
