Talking of artists, I have seen on a very old french movie poster, the name Maupi for an actor. It was a movie by Marcel Pagnol (late 40's early 50's). At school I have often been called "Mopin" or worst "Moppin". At the "College Francais", my secondary school, I have been listed for a year as " Maurin", and until recently I have been listed as "Mopin" at McGill University. I think it comes from the fact that many people dont know how to prononce the "au" which is very different from "o", at least in french (I live in Quebec, and half of my family is still in France). The "au" should be prononced a bit like "ow". When I was younger, I was very desperate about the way people would write or prononce my name. I have heard or read often these variants (in decreasing frequence): Mopin, Moppin, Moffet, Maurin, Dauphin, french for "Dolphin" : ), Moquin, and some other less frequent but funnier variants.
