Good Evening!!! I have almost all the the census from 1810 -1920 that contain Maupins on 4 x 6 cards I have all of the 1920 Arkansas. The Maupins you are talking about are most probably the family of George Webb Maupin, then James M. Maupin, then Andrew Jackson. Charlie D. Maupin was Vernons father he was born 3-20-1884 and died 10-1970 in Forest City. St. Francis Co;., AR. They lived very close to Andrew Jackson above. If you need any help on any Maupins census records just let me know. I have taken the 1810-1840 and set them up like the 1850-1920 censuses and have filled in the people in the various age groups. This couple would have been born around 1910-1915. The "family lore" has it that these Mauppins came to Arkansas directly from Germany, but I find that hard to believe. I suggested that they might be Huguenots who fled France to Germany and then emigrated to the U.S. One can easily see that "Mauppin" is not a German name.... > > Does anybody on the list have any Maupins in Arkansas? I know I need to go and check the 1910 or 1920 census, but I am having trouble walking due to tearing my Achilles tendon, and I have to put that trek off for awhile. Strangely enough, this ancestor is the oldest one that the Mauppin I talked to knows anything about! I found myself saying "What, you can't even get back to the 1800's?" but, I guess some people just aren't interested in finding out about their ancestors. > > thanks for any help > > Pat > celtic@ticnet.com > > > > ==== MAUPIN Mailing List ==== > RootsWeb forbids posting of copyrighted material without permission of the author. Hi cousins, Pat <celtic@ticnet.com> wrote : > .... The "family lore" has it that these Mauppins came to Arkansas > directly from Germany, but I find that hard to believe. This is possible. And here is a twisted idea : the french provinces Alsace and Lorraine were German territories between the 1870 and 1914-1918 wars. Today there are still Maupins in this area. (ok, no Mauppins, but maybe at this time there were). I have found only 3 Maupins in Germany (no Mauppins). One is called Guillaume (in Leipzig) and obviously he is french, another Alan (in Baumholder), who might be American. The third is Susana, and she could be from anywhere, but not of german origin apparently. > I suggested that > they might be Huguenots who fled France to Germany and then emigrated to the > U.S. Beware of untimely shortcuts ! : ) Not all Maupins are Huguenots (my family is not) and the reasons Maupins immigrated to America might not be only religion related. Since the religion wars of the 16th and 17th century Maupins from France had many reasons to emigrate : the French Revolutions (1789, 1830, 1848), the napoleonian wars (1800-1815), the franco-german wars (1870, 1914-1918, 1939-1945), and the bad economical situation that resulted from these troubled times. (By the way, did you knew that the 1789 French Revolution was caused by the bad economical situation that resulted from the french involvment in the American Revolution ?) Regards, Patrick
Patrick, You are indeed a fountain of knowledge. I knew that there were connections between the American and French revolutions, but not about the economic problems. That is probably one reason that we purchased the Louisana Territiory from France in 1803. While I can not answer for the rest of the Maupins in Germany, I can account for Alan. He is a 1st Sgt. in the US Army and has been on the list for some time. He was born in Kentucky and will be returning to the United States about the middle of next year. For what it is worth, I was stationed in France from 1963 to 1965 and often went through the town of Jergeau. I just wish I had known then what I know now. One of my paternal ggm was born at Dunville, Ont. She was of Scotish extraction. -- Loren Adams <kycollja@midusa.net> {:-)> HOKC *))))) TSG, USAF, Retired >From Iola, in the rolling hills of SE Kansas
