    1. [MAUPIN-L] JOHN MAUPIN & SALLY CROSSTHWAITE
    2. MAUPIN REUNION 2000
    3. Good Afternoon, Group!!! This will be of interest to those of you who are descendnants of John Maupin & Sally Crossthwaite. Sally's father was William Crossthwaite and her mother was Ann Shelton. The 1785 Census of Albemarle Co., VA lists the William Crossthwaite household of six (6) white souls and one dwelling. This would indicate there there were four children still left at home. The only other Crossthwaite in Albemarle Co, was Isaac Crossthwaite with eleven (11) white souls. This was probably William's brother or cousin, and not one of his children. After the death of Wm. Crossthwaite, Ann his wife married Jacob Powers (9-13-1787 in Albe. Co.) Her father Henry Shelton gave consent and it was witnessed by William Jarman and Robert Davis. This consent form would indicate that all of these people lived in the White Hall-Sugar Hollow area.(however, these names were not used at that time) William Crossthwaite died in 1786 leaving several children (apparently at least four). His wife after marring Jacob Power went to Harrison County, KY with her sons Shelton, Thomas, William, Perry and daughter Ann. This lists of names certainly matches the names John & Sally Maupin picked for their children. Recently I found information indicating that there maybe one more child to add to the list of John and Sally children. It was a girl named Margaret who must have been the oldest. Am still working on this information and will let you know if it can be proven. Although no "marriage bond" has been found for John & Sally Maupin, if they had been married under "marriage banns" as I suspect many of the early marriages were that we cannot prove, then they were perhaps married as early as 1781-1785 which would mean that Sally was not part of of the household of William Crossthwaite in 1785. I had until recently wondered why John & Sally family started so late. I have Bell Ann Maupin as the oldest but perhaps she was the second child after Margaret. It is possible also that we are missing other children in this family. Have additional information on this Crossthwaite line that I have found on the web and through talking with Dorothy about this family. I you would like additional information please e-mail me privately. William
