I think this list is about genealogical info only. Other concerns about privacy in general in today's world is irrelevant here, and should be taken off the list in my opinion. Norma and all, I appreciate Don's correction and apologize if I offended anyone for getting on my soap box about ID theft. We have had such problems with it here in Florida - the Orlando area in particular. We think when we give information to doctors, hospitals, dentists, etc. that this information is held securely - we know we have a right to privacy - and lately records have been showing up in or even near dumpsters - where anyone has access to them. I'm sure most who have this information protect it as best they can. Even to enroll in school requires a birth certificate and social security number - we have all this information floating around out there from at least then, right on through death. I don't want to make anyone paranoid, but the information is out there and it doesn't take computer hackers to obtain it. In one instance recently, a hospital clerk accidentally faxed a list of patients - with SS#, insurance info, dates of birth, and their problems to a car dealership instead of the clinic where it was suppose to go. Fortunately the person who received the fax phoned the local ABC channel and it was on the news. The law requires everyone who was involved be notified. How often does this happen and no one knows? (Closing the door after the horse is out is better than nothing). Some of the banks have had security breaches recently, etc. About the only things I know we can do to help prevent ID theft are: 1. Store birth certificates and other similar documents safely; 2. Shred receipts, documents, etc. that have any kind of credit/bank information on them before throwing them away; 3. Use something other than your mother's name for security on credit/bank cards (that way if an account is opened in your name and your mother's real maiden name is the security word you know it's a fraudulent account and anyone using your mother's real maiden name can NOT access your account information); 4. Report any missing card or document immediately. If it happens to you, realize you are not alone and it can be dealt with and cleared. Don't let the frustration get you down. I'm open to more suggestions! Good morning Don, Thank you for the correction on the spelling of Cincinnati. Don't know why I had it spelled wrong - had it correct in my PAF as well as Kenton Co. I better check what I sent for more errors. I was typing that while going crazy answering phone calls for my daughter who was on line taking a final exam. Idenity theft is a problem today. That is why I limited the living to my brother, my husband and I, our children and the two grandsons who live with me. I debated on adding my kids, but I wanted to include Jeni. More of a problem than idenity theft is the use of credit/bank card numbers by those not authorized to do so. My husband's checkcard has had to be replaced twice due to his not shredding a receipt, and once because someone at a motel where we used it shared it with someone else who took a vacation with it. Dustin's bankcard was stolen and used just a couple weeks ago. He phoned the bank immediately - before much damage was done. One of the ways to help avoid idenity theft is to NOT use your mother's maiden name for identification on accounts - where they ask for it as part of the ID verification. Make up a name or use one from earlier in the family. It is the Social Security number that must be safeguarded. In order to get a duplicate of your social security card these days it is necessary to show your birth certificate and a picture ID (at least here it is required). At least they trying. Blue Cross of MD has just reissued insurance cards - the news ones don't use your SS# as your ID #. Take a look at your Medicare card if you have one - there is your SS# followed by a letter. Ever go to the doctor? Most ask for it. Ever been in the hospital? Do you have any idea how many people have access to it? Even the cleaning people can get it in medical records. Have you ever worked? Employers have it. Used to be on employment applications. Ever filled a tax return? Everyone who handled it has access to your SS#. Anyone ask for it in cashing or using a check? Think about all the people who can access that information. I think the information is safer on this particular family list than any of the above where we give more information without question. After all, we are family. Cousins, Thank you for pointing out the ID theft info. I have used my mother's maden name and now regret it. It's such a shame the many hoops we have to jump through due to the bad apples. Gwen, Don is the person who was kind enough to lend me his Maupin book before the reissues. He didn't know me at all only from the Maupin link. Super fellow and I'm so glad he has found happiness with a new wife. As for the shredding, I was doing this to our old checks back last fall when my husband walked in. He was furious and threw it on the floor barely missing me as it shattered into a thousand pieces. I will buy a new one when money isn't so tight. Have had to be a miser since divorce isn't final. Cutting documents with scissors and throwing parts in garbage at different times. This is time consuming but works. Cuz, Norma __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Gwen, In reading through your records, I find that you have: Tinne Mildred Barnett, b. 7 Nov 1923, Cincinatti, Hamilton, Ohio, d. 9 April 1974, Womack Hospital, Ft. Bragg, Cumberland, NC. m. 6 May 1943, Covington, Boone, KY, First .. it's Cincinnati ... corrected spelling. Second.. Covington, KY ... is NOT in Boone County, it is in Kenton County [lived/worked there for years] Interesting post of your info .. but I would NEVER post the birth/marriage etc.. info for any LIVING person. Too many identity thieves out there. Good luck. Don Havlicek [My kids are Maupin descendants]
