Cousins, I too come from a long list of Daniels. I found the present Daniel in White Hall to be very friendly and easy to talk with - but I don't have any contact numbers, etc. I have been meaning to write and tell you that we spent my 70th birthday (Hallo"we'en, 2005) in Williamsburg. My older daughter, Mary Ellen, was here from Munich, Germany. I was showing her the Cole-Talliaferro house where the Gabriel Maupin's lived (diagonally across from the Burton Parish Church) and I took her around back to show her the Maupin Cemetery and the gravestones for the two boys who were killed in a horse accident - one of which was a Maupin. The plot had been cleaned up and the two gravestones were missing! That afternoon we went to the Rockefeller Library and I asked about the cemetery and the librarian was able to find a diagram of the cemetery showing how the gravestones were arranged (and it agreed with what I remembered) and the names on the gravestones. I had already told them that they were missing. I also spoke with a guide in the Library and she suggested I write a note that she would pass on to the 'Curator of Williamsburg.' Several weeks later I got a letter from the Curator and she said that the gravestones had been moved out of the "Cole-Talliaferro" cemetery to another small cemetery down the street where, I believe, the Maupin's had a 'tenament' or 'tenements.' I have not verified this - and I'm not even sure where this other cemetery is exactly. I will look into this in our traditional visit - usually at Thanksgiving time. I think most of you know that there is now a small sign telling when Gabriel Maupin operated the Market Square Inn. The sign is on the left corner as you face the Inn from the Duke of Gloucester St.. But there is no indication that the Maupin's occupied the Cole- Taliaferro house though it is in the records at the Rockefeller Library. I am not sure but it seems to me that Williamsburg is quick to acknowledge the owners of property in the late 19th century with plaques, etc. - perhaps because they are more likely to find their kin and get donations from them to help with the activities of the town. Finally I have a plausible theory of how the Maupins helped unite the 13 colonies and foment the Revolution! I see the Maupins generally close to the action throughout the last 300+ years - but not necessarily in the very center of the action. Like 'Tough' Daniel at Valley Forge - and Matt.... Best regards to you all, Tom Kitchens
When I was there several years ago (2001 I think) Dan and Betty Maupin were very hospitable. The house is on Maupin Dr. (a gravel road) which is right next to Mt. Moriah Church. There was sign out by the road that read "Maupin Orchards" You can see the farm house from the Mt. Moriah Cemetary. Daniel and Margaret are buried next to the farmhouse beneath a boxwood tree. Dan and Betty were living in the smaller house on the left and their son and family occupied the main farm house. They are very well known to those at Mt. Moriah Church. Dan is a descendant of Daniels son Joseph. When I was there it was apple season so it was very easy to meet them. You might try giving them a call in advance. Good Luck, Terry Maupin (a descendant of Daniels son Gabriel & Ann Ballard) From: H3ddd@aol.com Date: 2006/04/10 Mon AM 12:02:02 EDT To: MAUPIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MAUPIN-L] Re: Burial grounds of Daniel Maupin and wife, Margaret (Via) Maupin I may be in Albemarle Co. Daniel and Margaret are buried on the Maupin Farm in White Hall which sits outside of Charlottesville. We donated money and had tombstones erected where we believe they are buried in Maupin Reuinion 2000. Thanks to William Albertson organizing all of this. It was very touching as we all said a prayer and sang Amazing Grace. I'm sure the current Maupin residents would not mind your visiting the gravesites but you will need to get in touch with them. I don't have their names and address. Norma --------------------------------- Blab-away for as little as 1¢/min. Make PC-to-Phone Calls using Yahoo! Messenger with Voice.

Heidi, I'm not sure if I have all my facts straight as it has been awhile since I talked to the gentleman who lives on the farm - Daniel and Margaret are buried on the family farm in White Hall, Albemarle Co. The man who farms it I believe is Dan Maupin, a descendant from Jacob's side (I could very well be butchering this info as I don't have notes infront of me). I was able to get in contact with him after contacting the Mt. Moriah Church in Albemarle. The pastor is very very nice and willing to help. I think he'd only been on the job a couple of weeks when I talked to him. You might try going that route to see if Dan would let you stop by. He said the graves are marked with a recent marker placed by the family on the 200th anniversary of Daniel's birth. Good luck and have fun!
