    2. Hi Cousins: In The Chronicles of Oklahoma, do not know which volumn, there's a story that starts on pg 302 called "COLBERT FERRY ON RED RIVER, CHICKASAW NATION, INDIAN TERRITORY - Recollections of John Malcolm, pioneer ferryman. Recorded by W. B. Morrison. The Maupin brothers are mentioned along with a brother named Jim???? Straighten me out on this one Pat! ;) It mentions the Maupins and James running with Quantrill, spelled Quantrell. If anyone is interested in a copy of the whole article I might get it typed up soon and will send private copies as I'm not sure about the copyright on the books. Don't want to get in trouble but I have made photocopies from the books for my own use. TTYL, Cuz Sandi

    1. [MAUPIN-L] Thomas F. and John Maupin/Quantrill
    2. John & Linda Noel
    3. I was somewhat following the conversations about Maupin's riding with Quantrill and maybe with the James and Younger gangs. I was interested because of connections I have through other family lines to the Quantrill, James and Younger gangs and their families. In a book I picked up at a used book store titled "The Killer Legions of Quantrill" by Carl W. Breihan, published 1971 by Hangman Press, are included 3 photos for 2 Maupins who both rode with Quantrill. It seems to be a very factual account with bibliography and extensive appendix. It's shortcoming is that each person named in the book or photos does not always appear in the index. Fortunately is not a large book --- 144 pages with appendix. The book details Quantrill's life. Of those that rode with him, the Younger's and James's are highlighted in the book by including more detail of when they rode with him, etc. Of course, pictures of them are included too. One photo is of John Maupin with the caption "Quantrillian: later became famous frontier lawman, from original tintype. (Beshoar family papers)." The other 2 photos are of Thomas F. Maupin. Under his photo the caption is: "Quantrillian; settled in Texas after the war. (Beshoar family papers.)." The caption under his other photo which is really a drawing the caption is; "T. F. Maupin fought with Quantrill; later became a Texan cattleman. (Carl W. Breihan Collection.)." The only mention of either Maupin in the text of the book occurs in the Appendix, page 125, in correspondence taken from the OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE WAR OF THE REBELLION - UNION AND CONFEDERATE ARMIES - 1861-1865, Headquarters District of Southwest Missouri is a memo dated Macon, May 29, 1865 1:50 pm to Maj. J.W. Barnes, Assistant Adjutant-General from Geo. Spalding, Brevet Brigadier-General: "Captain Harris, of Howard County company, under Order No. 3, reports that Sergeant Digges, of his company, with a small detachment, had a skirmish with Jim Anderson's gang of guerrillas on the morning of the 24th instant near Rocheport. Killed five bushwhackers and one horse. The names of the killed are Theo. CASSELL, of Jackson County; Kelly, of Saint Louis, a one-armed man; John CHAPMAN, Clay County and Thomas MAUPIN, of Callaway; one man, name not known." Linda Noel

William, where are you when I need you! John Harris Maupin was my John Maupin's first cousin. My John was the son of Dabney Maupin~Sarah "Sally" Dennis and he married Mary Jane Williams. Also, thinking about it, since the Maupin boys ran with Quantrill, that would be the link with the James boys. They might just have been buddies. I think I'll go look at the top of my head in the mirror if I can stand the shock! LOL Cuz Sandi

So far, nada. That is, to their running with the James boys. I knew they were with Quantrill. These Maupins were second cousins to my GG granddaddy, John Maupin. One of my Fitzpatrick cousins told me that the gang use to go to Rush Springs, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, now Rush Springs, Grady CO, OK, and stay at his G granddaddy's farm when they were in the area. He said he is sending me some information on this. Now, John Maupin's daughter, Mary Daniel, married James Fitzpatrick and they were my G grandparents. James' brother was Buck Fitzpatrick and the same person who had the farm where the gang is said to have visited. It would make sense to me that the Maupin boys were in touch with John Maupin and also knew Jim and Mary [Maupin] Fitzpatrick and that Jim's brother had a perfect place for hiding. Of course, the family never talked about this so all I can do with it is make a nice story eventually. Off the top of my head, John Rice Maupin married Helen Eastman and they had a daughter, Leah. I didn't know they had any sons. I will have to check with the Patrick cousin on that one. She must be holding out! LOL She sent me a lot of stuff on John Rice and brother William that was very interesting. I sure wish I'd been there to speak with this Robert Dean Maupin. Oh, so that's what you were getting at---the man at the reunion who said he was a linear descendant of John Rice Maupin. I, for one, would be glad to have this mystery cleared up as well. I bet he is a descendant of one of John Rice Maupin's brothers. > John Harris Maupin was my John Maupin's first cousin. My John was the son of > Dabney Maupin~Sarah "Sally" Dennis and he married Mary Jane Williams. This one is a cinch compared to one that has me going around in circles right now. It seems that James Grier's sons Thomas and James each had a son named Alexander. Then, both Alexanders married Spratt sisters--one married Margaret Spratt and one married Mary Spratt. One had a son named Alexander Pringle Grier who died at age 14, so the other named one of his children Alexander Pringle Grier in memory of his cousin. What a mess! What makes it so much of a mess is that Family Tree Maker wants to have both Alexanders marrying the same Spratt girl and wants to attribute Alexander Pringle Grier to both Alexanders even though one Alexander Pringle lived to an old age and married, etc. My head is still spinning! 3. One thing that I learned at the Reunion was that three Maupin boys (from a Maupin-Dabney line)named John Rice Maupin, James Maupin, and Thompson Maupin rode with Quantrell's Raiders during the border wars, which I think was about 5 years before the war of northern aggression. After the war they rode with Jesse & Frank James. The Maupin boys were friends with the Younger brothers, who might have been counsins to Jesse & Frank. A direct descendant of John Rice Maupin, Robert Dean Maupin, was at the reunion. He's about 40 years old, very good looking and portrays John Rice Maupin in re-enactments. He lives in Lexington, MO now where these Maupin brothers are revered. Rob has a beard and looks very much like what you'd think those Maupins must have looked like in the mid-1800s. That was really interesting. Love to all my Maupin Cousins, Denise Maupin Watson

Linda ( a descendant of Gabriel Maupin and Ann Ballard) >> Hi Linda: All suggestions are happily received! That would be a good idea but I'm wondering just how much information can be put on just one site on MyFamily.com. That's why I'd like to see where all belong.
