Hi Sandi, For all of you who missed the 2000 Reunion, it was very informing and so great to meet those who were there. It restored my faith in the warmth and friendliness of humankind. All, Maupins, or their spouses (who I told were Maupins too), were friendly, warm, kind and shared laughter and humorous stories. I met two women who reminded me so much of my sister. They had the same blue eyes with a dark blue ring around the outside and looked enough alike to know they were related. I was able to introduce, Ethel Clark to my sister and when they looked at each other, they both laughed and said, "Yes. We do resemble." Cousin Sandi: Thank you for your kind remarks. About the unattended gravesite in Williamsburg, Bill said he thought there was some sort of friction between some family members and that caused its neglect. I don't hear well so may have missed the finer points. He said he previously asked if he could get someone in to clean it up and the owner said no, but he would have it cleaned up for $10,000!!! I think I heard that right. Also, as we were leaving the area, he remarked that he wouldn't be surprised if the owner didn't send the authorities out to run us off; and about that time, a tall man entered the area and we all thought he had come to dispense with our group - but he passed right by us. They were doing lots of digging in the area and I asked one young man what was going on and he said they were laying wire and cables. Don't know why. The burial site was a charming area; toward the back brick wall and surrounded by a brick wall with the rounded bricks on top. Cleaned up and a small tree planted would make it a beautiful spot. Too bad. Bettye (Mrs. Max Gail) Maupin By the way, Bill mentioned you several times and praised you for all the hard work you were doing. You should feel proud. _________________________________________________ >In a message dated 10/31/00 6:50:47 PM, mgm148@rollanet.org writes: > ><< Can you tell we had a wonderful time? >Max Gail and Bettye Maupin > - and the weather was great!!! >> > >Hi Bettye: > >What a wonderful picture you painted with words about the reunion! Hi again Sandi, Can't find the reply on the Williams line at the moment but wanted to answer any way. I know a couple of years ago Williams was the biggest last name above Jones and Smith. And, yes, they are hard to find I noticed that you and I have another connection and that is the name Walker. My Sears (paternal side) married a Nancy Walker. We may uncover even more. Okay, I'm going to tell this the way I think that I heard it at the reunion, but do not hold me to the truth of it. I heard bits & pieces from several different people, so maybe someone knows the truth. John Rice and his brothers James & Thompson (who was called Tom) rode with Quantrill. Apparently at some point, a union guy shot Tom in the leg. As he begged for his life (I'm not sure if that's exact), the union guy shot him in the head. Then John Rice hunted down the union guy and here is where there were 2 versions I heard: 1) while two of the brothers held him, the 3d cut off his head 2) john rice hunted him down, cut of his head, and put it on a stick. Does anyone know what actually happened? Love, Denise

Does anyone know whether or not John U. was one of them. Leanna I have a list given to me by Donald Maupin of Durant, OK, called "Known Members of Quantrill's, Anderson's and Todd's Guerrillas---This is a complete list of those who served in the Border Wars: Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas". John Upton Maupin is not on this list. The Maupins on the list are: Jim Maupin, John Rice Maupin, Tom Maupin, and William Bailey Maupin. These names are also on the list: Jesse James, Frank James, Coleman Younger, James Younger. The interesting thing is that some of the Maupins were on both the Quantrill and the Anderson List (Tom Maupin was only on the Quantrill list) and Cole Younger was on the Quantrill list (but not on the other lists) and James Younger was on the Todd list only. Frank James was on the Quantrill and Anderson lists while Jesse James was only on the Quantrill list. The entire list is 5 pages single spaced typing. HTH Pat

I took some pictures with my digital camera. I forwarded them to Phyllis already. I am extremely busy at work, so I don't have a lot of time right now to spend on Maupin stuff. As far as the reunion went, it was fantastic. I almost didn't go because of my work schedule but at the last minute I got a decent airfare from US Air right to Charlottesville from St. Louis. I am glad I went. Also, my younger son, Zachariah, surprised me and drove down from Scranton, PA. I had a good visit with him. As most have already said but I will ditto: Bill Albertson deserves a big THANK YOU for all the hard work he did. And he never stopped. And the weather was super. Couldn't have been planned any better. The Virginia countryside was gorgeous. I did take a few pictures with my digital camera. I have already forwarded these to Phyllis Bauer. Denise, my line descends from Thomas MAUPIN and Judith COBBS through their son Fleming Cobb MAUPIN. Judith Cobbs, daughter of Thomas Cobbs and Nancy Upton died 1804 and Thomas then married his cousin Margaret Maupin, daughter of William and Mildred White. Thomas and Margaret actually had 8 children., Reuben P, William(1. died as an infant) Beverly W(male), Chapman White, Margaret, Henry Bascomb, Mildred, and William L.(2) Mildred married Albert Decker. Beverly married twice, 1st to Elesia Love, 2nd to Julie?------. I can give you census results on some of this if you want. let me know. Pauline.
I would like three copies of Dorothy's book. I don't know who's keeping the list, but whoever it is, would you please add my order. Thanks, Denise
I would be interested in a John and Frances web site. My line is Gabriel>Daniel>John>Thomas>John Dabney>Charles>Daniel>John>Morris>Me. John Maupin
