Dear Alan and cousins, Could it be interesting to map all these USGS toponyms ? We could also map the occurence of the name Maupin, for today but also for historical data (why not start with Gabriel and Marie). I am sure it could be a very interesting source of information to guide our genealogical efforts. I have all the required equipment for such a task (mainly GIS softwares and a couple of spatial analysis tools). If anyone is interested we could organize a special task force : ) of about 5 or 6 persons to go through all the data structuring process. Maybe by next summer we could have a product available to the Maupin community ... Cheers, Patrick Maupin (a french-canadian cousin)

Bonjour Cousin Patrick: I was hoping you would enter the conversation about the Maupin name being you are the only true French person I know of on the list. Don't flay me cousins if there are others! I asked a French friend from Montreal, by the way, how she would pronounce Maupin as I'd heard it was "Mo-peen" and didn't think that was right. I was told "Mow-pah" and the pah rather comes through the nasal passages. That would be my take on how to pronounce it correctly. French people are sticklers on how their language is pronounced folks! In our USA family we say "Mah-pin" so you can see it might be spelled correctly, but it sure isn't pronounced correctly. Now, Patrick, YOU tell us the super correct way to pronounce Maupin AND, would it make a difference in different parts of France? In the USA the same word can be pronounced many ways depending on where one is from. Best, Cousine Sandi

Very interesting, Patrick. Thanks! In Arkansas where my husband's Maupins migrated to from Missouri, they say it like with a broad 'a' -- Mahpin, is that close? Another question, haven't I seen the first few generations listed as something like D'Maupain, or deMaupain? What's up there? June
