    3. Richard..... I doubt that this Opal was ever in Missouri, but who knows? I have been unable to come up with her place of birth. Some of that family went to Missouri...so, maybe. This might answer my question as to why there is a period of a few years that are unaccounted for. (I thought they were just being illusive! :-)) I will look at the censuses from Missouri to see if I can find the family. Where in Missouri would I look for your Opal? Incidentally, this Opal was my grandmother. 1. Re: [MAUPIN-L] Bennett MAUPIN
    2. Carol Breeden
    3. Sorry, Pauline, the birthdate of Bennet Maupin is 4 July 1788...NOT 1766. I do apologize. His parents were Mathew Maupin and Lucy Ballard. On 3 Oct 1808 Bennet Maupin was married to Mary Burch. (My source says the marriage took place in Bath Co, KY.) They had three sons...Alexander, John Burch, and Daniel. I am presuming that Mary Burch Maupin died, because... According to court records, Bennet Maupin was married to Mary Royse on 7 Jan 1819 in Fleming Co, KY. William Maupin (my ancestor) was born on 11 Oct 1819 in Fleming Co, KY. In 1820, Bennet Maupin is listed on the Fleming Co, KY Census with a wife, four sons and one daughter. I am only assuming that these sons are Alexander, John Burch, Daniel, and the new baby, William. Maybe Mary Royse had a daughter when she and Bennet were married, or maybe there was a daughter born during his marriage to Mary Burch. I do not know. According to court records, Bennet Maupin was married to Sally Blackburn on 8 May 1827 in Nicholas Co, KY. .An article about Rev. William Maupin after he died stated that he was born in Fleming County, KY on Oct 11, 1819 and died in Union County, IN on June 27, 1873. He married Maletha Parish in Fleming Co, KY in the fall of 1839. She died in the spring of 1858 in Jennings Co, IN. William then married Rhoda Jane Hall in the fall of 1858. Hope this is of some help to you. 3. I was just looking through Dorothy's book and saw the name Pleasant Maupin. It jogged my memory on something Bill said. He said that originally they thought that Pleasant was maybe a surname, but it turned out that one of the Maupins had a place called "Pleasant Retreat." And that's where the name Pleasant comes from. I thought it was interesting that they would name their children for a place. Love, Denise

    3. On Nov. 5, 2000, Vicki wrote: "At the Missouri reunion last summer I picked up a piece of paper with the title: 'A Forgotten Hero of the Revolution "Tough Daniel Maupin".' It has the page number 247 on the bottom of it. It is very interesting reading and I was wondering where I could find the rest of it to read. Does anyone out there have a clue? It was laying with the guns that were displayed at that reunion. Any clue would be appreciated." I suspect that article was copied from Dorothy Maupin Shaffett's book, "The Story of Gabriel and Marie Maupin," as an article by the same title appears at page 247 of her book. The article carries over for 5 more lines on page 248. The whole article is in italics, implying it was written originally by someone else. Unfortunately, Dorothy did not include, either at the end or the beginning of the article, a citation to the original. Perhaps the book provides that information somewhere else. She might have been quoting Eugene Maupin's work. I'm sure someone else on the list, more familiar with Dorothy's book, can provide more information on the source of the article. By the way, we know where the cemetery is that is described in the article--south of Richmond in Madison County, KY. Warren B. Wood
