Perhaps you all would be interested in this article from the FTM Genealogy Library from "History & Genealogies" by Miller. "Many of the Maupin family emigrated from Virginia to Kentucky in the first settling of the latter, and located in different parts thereof, many of them settling in Madison County, later on a number of them went from Kentucky to Missouri. It can be truthfully said of this family, generally they are full of life, high spirited, lovers of freedom and sport, true to their friends, generous to a fault, and whatever their imperfections and faults may be, and their faults do not exceed the faults of other good families, no one, rich or poor, high or low, peaceably inclined ever entered their portals without being received with hospitality, and made easy and welcome. The latch string hangs on the outside at their home. They are not lacking in patriotism, are ever ready to enlist in the cause of their Country. In the Civil War this family furnished its quota of soldiers. A true Maupin will not turn a hungry one from his door without feeding him, and if he is cold and naked he will clothe him." Elizabeth

Joan Bell ad my name please.
According to a book I have, Jenny was a nickname for Jane, Virginia, or Janet. Kathy
I live in Reedsport in Douglas County on the Central Oregon Coast. Maupin is in Wasco County in Central Oregon between The Dalles and Bend. Maupin is about a 5 1/2 hour drive from Reedsport. (My mothers name is Roberta Sawyer not Roberts. That was just a typo that I didn't catch.) Sarah Catherine MAUPIN b. 6 Mar 1830 to Perry MAUPIN and Rachel BRADLEY married Jacob Riley HAMILTON ? on the 19 Nov 1854 ? They lived in Mercer County, Missouri and she died 24 March 1863 and they are both buried at the Hamilton Cemetery near Modena, Mercer, Missouri. I don't have much information on Sarah MAUPIN, nor her family Perry and Rachel, except there children were Zidana, Garrett, Isabelle, possibly John Henry and Sarah Catherine who died shortly after she was born. Sarah Maupin died about the same time as little Sarah, but I don't know if they were buried together. I have seen Howard MAUPIN listed on the MAUPIN-L list and am also very interested in him. I heard about Maupin's Ferry and a town being named after him, but didn't see a county and was hoping someone would have information about where it is. I am in contact with another cousin who lives in Vancouver, Clark, Washington who told me a little about Howard and she did say she found it in a History Book, but couldn't remember which one. Does anyone out there have any information on any people of the above, could sure need some help. Thank you, Joan Bell, of Spokane, Washington.
On November 6, 2000, June wrote: <Do we know where he ["Tough" Daniel Maupin] is buried?> My response: According to the article in Dorothy's book at pp. 247-48, "Tough" Daniel Maupin was buried in "a little, neglected and forgotten cemetery on the Big Hill Road, three or four miles out of Richmond, Kentucky." William H. Miller's notes for his 1907 book on the Maupins and others described it as "the Daniel Maupin grave yard on the Big Hill Road adjacent to the yard of the residence of Mrs. Thomas D. Chenault, the land formerly owned and occupied by Daniel Maupin, whose resident [residence?] was on or near the spot of the present magnificent Mansion of Mrs. Chenault." The Chenault home originally was called "Cumberland View." As described in "Place Names of Madison County, Kentucky" by the Boonesborough Chapter DAR (1940-41), pg. 49: "On the right of the highway is "Cumberland View", built by Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Tribble in 1855, it is of brick with beautiful Colonial pillars of Doric style, and its magnificent view of the Cumberland Mountains. After the death of Mr. Tribble, Mr. Thomas D. Chenault occupied the home for many years, and it is now occupied by Douglas Chenault and his wife Sara Hall Smith. This land here was where Daniel Maupin III from Virginia, and his wife Margaret McWilliams lived. It was a large rambling log house stood on the hill to the right of the present home, and the slave quarters were to the left of the house and running back some distance. Here they raised a large family and acquired much property on Muddy Creek, Little Muddy Creek, Otter Creek, Silver Creek, and Hart's Fork. Daniel Maupin and his wife are buried in the family burial lot on the farm near the Chenault home and near the highway." Unfortunately, the grand Chenault home no longer is standing there. The little graveyard, once neglected and in a field, now lies in the back yard of the middle stone house on the property of the Okinite Cable Company on the west side of US Highway 25 about 3 miles southeast of Richmond, KY, and about one mile north of Terrill Junction. There are only a few remaining headstone now: Bates, several Cornelisons, Elimore, Goodman and Kindred. I understand from Loren Adams that many years ago, someone took a number of the headstones and placed them in the Richmond Cemetery near the grave of George Washington "Wash" Maupin. Warren B. Wood

Norma, The story is on page 247 and 248 in Dorothy's book I have been told and someone graciously sent me the rest of it. Vicki
Sandi, Thank you for the rest of the article. Vicki
Hi cousins, wanted to put my 2 cents in-whatever the cost of Dorothy's book, it is worth it because of the love, dedication and the work that went into it. She went to Salt Lake City, Amerstdam, and France in order to get the record correct. I commend the lady and she is a lovely person. I have been corresponding and talking on the telephone with her for 20 years and finally met her at the reunion. The early Maupin history has finally been documented correctly and it is very interesting reading-and I am only the Maupin researcher-my husband is the Maupin. William Did you folks get all the of the orders sent out? I placed an order several months ago, but still have not received anything. Thanks. Sharron
Hi cousins, Thanks for the very interesting answers. So, if I understand everything well, most of the time in the USA, afroamerican got their family name via pre-civil war events (slavery, emancipation, etc). But it is also possible that the name Maupin was transmitted through wedding ... isn't it ? The last would mean the Maupins could have also roots in Africa. Is there a possibility ?
