    3. Hi Loren, this is Carolyn Farmer, Texas - Glad it was just the ear-Bill and I enjoyed the reunion very much and meeting everyone and making new friends. I just replied to Pat re Dorothy's book and what she had told me. I think Madison Cty KY would be ideal for a reunion - have been there many times as all of Bill's lines - both sides come out of the original 3 or 9 KY counties. 3. Hi Pat, I asked Dorothy about corrections/additions while at the reunion and she told me then that it "would be" printed exactly as the original book-that she was not up to the task to making corrections or adding information. That would have to be up to someone to do. Now - she may change her mind of course- but I do think she would be ideal repository for any Maupin information - all in one place and if someone is willing to do a Part II or an addendum for those who have the Orginal Book - it would be easy to acquire. 3. Hi Bettye, (Mrs. Max) You may be only a Maupin by marriage, but you sure fit in as part of the family. I thought your daughters were wonderful and both seemed very interested in the family. You forgot to mention that Dru's son, Zachariah, came down and brought his professional video camera. He is hoping to do some editing and making some video of the dedication cerenonies available later. Several others also brought personal video cameras. I didn't realize I was being secretive about my illness, but was just trying to keep going. Turns out that it was a combination of, pushing too heard to get there, an inner ear problem that developed going over the mountains and trying to deny that the calendar pages keep turning. Thank you and all the others, for watching over me. More proof that we are part of a loving family. Before I left, Dorothy and I had company. Leora slipped coming down to breakfast, making it three. She was a little shook up, but no injury. I am so glad that you and the girls enjoyed it so much. So much of the joy is in meeting other family members and exchanging information. I feel blessed meeting so many that I had only met over the internet or by mail. I never realized there were so many cousins from Texas, and I spent more than a dozen years in the San Antonio area. 3. Hi Vicki, The reunion was fine. I was the party pooper, so to speak. I arrived fine, but became very dizzy shortly after I got there. Nothing serious, but put a bit of damper on the festivities. Developed a bit of inner ear problem and was off balance for several days. The weather was beautiful, near 70 days and near 45 at night. The fall color was peaking and there was just a little little rain and wind. William's announcement pertaining to "Tough" Daniel was naming his first wife (mother of Garten, etc.) and providing the available evidence. While not conclusive the weight is very strong that she was Mary BALLARD and that the marriage ended in divorce. She was still living when Daniel married Elizabeth GENTRY and moved to Kentucky, taking the 6 children of the first marriage with him. I was already aware that he and Betsy only had 5 children as they were named in Martin GENTRY's will. I will have to get out my notes to get the BALLARD information. I do not recall his providing of new information on Delilah, but may just have missed it. 3. Hi Cousins, First, I want to thank all of you who attended the reunion at C'ville; it was a wonderful gathering. For those who couldn't be there, we missed you and hope you will be able to join us at a future one - or at least a local reunion. The trip to Williamsburg was both friendly and informative. Watch for announcements, suggestions and requests about possible MAUPIN research groups I am aware that there are already several reunions, Sandi has started a new one that I hope will become as routine as has the one in Missouri. Interest was expressed that perhaps one will get started in Texas. Second, I want to thank all those that were concerned about my health and aided me during the reunion. Those that were betting on an ear problem being the cause - win. Mostly due to the BIG change in altitude, and something to do with calendar pages. By now many of you have recieved your packages and information from White Hall. Bill still had some to finish when I left. I am still wadding through more than 1000 e-mails that arrived during my vacation, mostly from this list. What a bunch of cousins. The statement that Bill (William) made concerning the family of John MAUPIN and Sally CROTHWAITE was an expression of his interest in this line. The reasons are several. but mostly concern the fact that this is the most unknown and least documentated line in the family. Some parts of this line may also interconnect with that of Carr MAUPIN. The families extend from the upper Madison County (The MAUPIN Bend) area to the Clay/Laurel County area of Kentucky to several Missouri Counties and back. Dorothy has ordered 300+ copies of the book. She does not plan to put out any suppliments. When the books are received in Kansas City, Bill, and possibly myself, will go up and help her get them put in the mail. This will be the 2nd edition, 2nd printing: NO changes to the previous edition. At the reunion she stated $40 per book - in spite of several objections. I think that was to include postage, but I need to recheck that. My mind wasn't all it should have been during the reunion. SUPPLIMENTS: A couple of ideas are in the mill. 1. Bill has expressed the idea of using a family line at a time as the feature article in the news letter. 2. A representative (group) publish a suppliment, on their line, and make it available to the family through the internet. CORRECTIONS: Corrections to Dot's book should be submitted both to her and to the list. That way she has them and can work with them in her way and the rest of us can update our material. A SUGGESTION was put forth that the next = BIG = reunion be held in Madison County, Kentucky, in 5 or 10 years. Three of us went to the UV library and made copies of the MAUPIN - JEFFERSON letters. They are in "Old" FRENCH and appear to be very generic. Bill was going to take a copy to Dr. King for translation. Enough for now. Perhaps some of this will be answered as I read through all of these e-mails. If so please forgive me for getting ahead of the mail. If I miss anything let me know and I'll try to fill in the gaps. 2. Pat, When I click on the link it goes there. I don't know what's wrong. This is a small part of the list. The Kansas Heritage Server would like to thank Richard A. Ensminger for contributing to this material. Rich passed away 29 May 1996 at Kirkwood, Missouri. He was 58 years old and had been with ALMSA, SIMA, and LSSC since 1969. Memorial services were held at Webster Groves, Missouri. Rich loved to read about the old west, and this material is archived in Rich's memory. From "Richard A. Ensminger" 22-MAR-1996 Subject: Quantrill File Update Update to the Quantrill Guerrilla file, version 3.5. The Complete and Authentic Life of Jesse James, by Carl Breihan, with an introduction by Homer Croy 8. Jesse James Was His Name, by William A. Settle, Jr. Disclaimer: Only these sources listed above were used to compile the following list. Other authors have presented this subject, but were not available to me at this time. Carl Breihan claims that only 296 names have been verified as members of Quantrill's band. This list is considerably longer than 296 names. I have indicated where the lists agree and disagree, without making judgements. The wide variance is possibly due to the inclusion of names of recruits who may have been placed in Quantrill's charge to transport them to Confederate territory, and who may have been wounded, killed, captured, or otherwise identified during the transit period. Additional information on the lives of individuals after the close of the Civil War was drawn from his book on Jesse James. ============================================================= THE FREEDOM RAID Quantrill's first raid, the so-called "Freedom Raid", December 1860. Quantrill set up 5 Kansans in a fake raid on the Morgan Walker farm near Blue Springs, MO, 10 Dec 1860. The ambush was by Andy Walker, later member of Quantrill's guerrillas John Tatum, Lee Koger, D. C. Williams, later member of Quantrill's guerrillas Charles Ball, escaped the ambush, went back for Lipsey. Killed two days later by Quantrill and others. John Dean, wounded, escaped back to Lawerence, KS. Chalkey T. Lipsey, seriously wounded. Rescued by Charles Ball. Hid out in nearby woods. Found and killed two days later. Albert Southwick, escaped back to Lawerence, KS. Edwin Morrison, killed. ============================================================= BUILDING COLLAPSE, KANSAS CITY, MO 13 August 1863 Several female relatives were held in confinement in a delapidated building in Kansas City, MO. There is no proof that the foundations were diliberately weakened, despite the claims of Quantrill's men. The death and injuries to the women are often cited as the justification for the continued activity and acts of the guerrillas. both during the Civil War and afterward. Note that several of the Jesse James family were involved in this incident or similar ones. I have not included members of the James family other than Frank and Jesse in order to reduce the confusion of trying to keep Quantrill's career separate from the James'. Note: The building was located on the site of 1409 Grand Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri. These women were: 1. Mrs. Charity Kerr, sister of John McCorkle--killed. 2. Mrs. Nannie McCorkle, sister-in-law of John McCorkle--uninjured. 3. Susan Vandiver, cousin of Cole Younger--uninjured. 4. Armenia Gilvey, cousin of Cole Younger--killed. 5. Josephine Anderson, sister of Bill Anderson--killed. 6. Mary Anderson, sister of Bill Anderson--crippled (age 16). (both legs broken) 7. Jennie Anderson, sister of Bill Anderson--uninjuried (age 10). ============================================================= LEGEND: * = Member of the first band, formed Winter 1860 + = Also listed by Carl Breihan's "Quantrill and His Civil War Guerrillas" ++ = Listed only by Breihan NAME ORGANIZATION REMARKS ============================================================= Agen, (No Christian name given) Anderson Killed 1864 Akers, Slyvester (Vess)+ Quantrill Survived war Went to KY with Quantrill. I couldn't find the following in Dorothy's book.. ================================= Subj: Maupin Line lookup Date: 11/07/2000 2:08:48 PM Mountain Standard Time From: bhgothie@mindspring.com To: EllieSS@aol.com I am looking for descendants of a Maupin who lived in the TX and married a Gates girl. Their names are: Eudora Jane Gates born April 7, 1874 and married to Charles Maupin on December 25, 1890.The Gates family lived in Blanco or Kendall County, TX at the time. This isn't too far from San Antonio. Eudora Jane Gates Maupin died in the 1920s in California. I have no death date for Charles Maupin Their children are: Esca born 1895 died during WWI George Dewey born 1897 and died in New Mexico in the 1920s in a motorcycle accident. Corinne born in 1899 no further information except that she married Emmet Bussey. Gay born about 1901 and married Otis Pruitt and moved to California. Could you look this family up in the Maupin book to see if they are listed? I have seen a posting for this family on Rootsweb, but the return address was disfunctional by the time I got to it. Any help would be appreciated. Reply to bhgothie@mindspring.com. Thanks. Barb Gothie

"Cuff" Daniel MAUPIN (1727-1803) was a son of "Old" Daniel. "Tough" Daniel MAUPIN (1760-1832) was a son of "Cuff" Daniel (and I assume he is also the one called "Daniel III"). "Saddler" Daniel MAUPIN (1756-1838) was a son of John who was a son of "Old" Daniel. The above is per Dorothy's book. Warren B.
