    2. Hi Cousins: This list, plus others I administer, less the MAUPIN-CHAT-L have been super quiet of late. Many lists I subscribe to have people emailing to see if THEY are alive. I think the big problem is the election mess and people not being able to stay away from TV news about that. Then, now that it's over and done, people are out doing their Christmas shopping. Or, some are snowed in and their net usage has been cut off for now. Any of you who have the time to get to know your family better really should subscribe to our MAUPIN-CHAT-L. I highly recommend that site as we just talk about anything we want and a lot of teasing goes on! Cuz Sandi

    3. Well Pat, I didn't know this either. Thanks a lot...good rule of thumb. And I always try to find the actual date the census was taken to help with the age when a child is listed by how many months old it is. 1. [MAUPIN-L] Census Day vs. Census Period
    2. Loren J. Adams
    3. William, You brought up an excellent point. The Census DAY - is the day on which ALL the questions are based. That is: What was the marital status of each person listed - on April 1st. Perhaps you got married on April 5th and the Census Taker arrived on April 10. The correct answer for this person would be "Single"; even though they WERE married at the time the Census taker arrived. The Census Period - is the time frame allowed for the Census Enumeration (head count) to be completed. In the early years (before 1850) it was usually 18 months. The 1820 Census actually took about 3 years. This was because special extensions were granted, by Congress, to allow for the new states of Maine and Florida to be enumerated. Today the period is greatly reduced, by using mail and more persons. I hope this answers some Questions. I worked as an enumerator on the 1988 Kansas State Census and the 1990 and 2000 Federal Census. -- Loren <kycollja@midusa.net> {:-)> HOKC *))))) TSG, USAF, Retired >From Iola, in the rolling hills of SE Kansas

    2. MAUPIN REUNION 2000
    3. Good Afternoon!! Thank you for this information. It is very helpful to know the effective date of the Census, however, the dates do vary because of the lenght of time it took to acturally take the Census. I went to a seminar years ago given by the National Archives, they pointed out and explained the census taking in this way. What we see on the micro film is in most cases the third copy of the actual census. The original taken by the person at each home was to be filled out "COMPLETELY" NO ABBREVIATIONS AND ALL ITEMS WERE TO BE FILLED IN. This copy was taken to the county seat and a copy was made and left there, and a copy was made of this copy and sent to the Federal Government. That is why there are so many errors, it was copied twice after the first entry. In some cases people got tired of writing and started abbreviating etc. William----- Original Message ----- From: Pat <celtic@ticnet.com> To: <MAUPIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 16, 2000 11:32 AM Subject: Re: [MAUPIN-L] Free Ancestry.Com > Here is something interesting I thought maybe others would like to know. 3. Here is something interesting I thought maybe others would like to know. As I am sort of new to this researching, I didn't know it and the rest of you probably already do. CENSUS DAY 1790, 1800,1810, 1820 The First Monday in August 1830-1900 June 1st 1910 April 15th 1920 January 1st 1930-1980 April 1st. This helped explain to me certain ages and birth dates. Pat

Christopher was taken aback, and the only thing he could think of to say was, "Uh, I think we're related." Now, he is embarrassed and thinks that John might think Chris is a weirdo. So, I told him I would find out whose John this is! BTW: he said his grandmother went to the reunion. Isn't it nice that we have two pilots flying for US Airways that are Maupins? Pat
