    3. Susan, I am sorry if I indicated you might be criticizing Dot's book. I was aware that you had already conferred with her on it. = = = = = = = = = = = = Susan wrote: I was in no way criticizing the book or her and just wanted others to have further information. = = = = = = = = = = = = = I learned a lot watching Dot fret over the original book. What do I include, leave out or add to. All the time new information was being exchanged - the hard way. Then it got closer to print time, cost factors began to creep into the picture. How many pictures, how many pages, etc. What is a reasonable and affordable price for our cousins? Quality? Quanity? During the latter months I was on a standing Federal Grand Jury, in Kansas City, and had to spend several days up there every sixth week. It gave me a chance to visit, sit at her kitchen table and ponder. We had a problem with Betsy Gentry, wife of "Tough" Daniel Maupin. The date of her marriage, and the number of children (11) just didn't fit. Her father's will confirmed 5 children - that did fit. Yet they were giving permission for the older children to get married. We were missing a piece of the puzzle, but what to do. She gave the facts as we knew them and let the rest stand as it was. William has since found some very conclusive evidence to account for the first six children. I enjoyed the reports from her trips and eagerly awaited the next discovery and associated stories. Although, I must admit that some of LD's stories provided more humanity and laughter. What a pair. What I was trying to explain was simply that Dorothy put uncovering the "True Story" first. Second she made every effort to report Eugene Maupin's work as she found it and give him full credit for it. That is the reason for the funny numbering system. Little effort was made to change his work. Then came the hard part - HOW - WHAT - and which NEW information to include, without turning it into a set of encyclopedias. That was the headache and worry, which was accompanies by a major accident and some health problems. Finally - off to the press. By the time the first 500 copies arrived it was obvious that her guess was WAY short. So she worked with the publisher and they made some agreements. She could make some corrections and additions - AS long AS - it would NOT require changing the page numbering system. So it was back to the drawing board. She just knew she would never get rid of the 2nd 500. It took a bit of time, less than two years, and she was out again. Through the process she donated MANY copies, gave permission to the LDS to film a copy and lost her loaner. After 6 years she finally consented to print another 300 copies. These were simply additional copies printed from the plates of the 2nd edition. God bless Dorothy for her work on behalf of the family. It was rough, but he stood by her through accidents and health problems, but the years have taken their toll. Help was offered to distribute this last printing, but politely declined. She and LD are doing it all. Now it is up to the rest of us to update, bring together, correct and record the rest of the past, the present and the future. I pray we will be able to share a lot of it with Dorothy and prove all her work was worthwhile. While Dorothy does not plan to reprint any more copies - she IS still doing and sharing research, and updating her files. William is preparing a newsletter, part of which will be dedicated to correcting past errors, filling in the gaps, and publishing new information. There will be room for stories, research and FUN. NOW, I'm looking forward to the spring picnic in California, the Reunion in Fulton, some research time with William and another trip to Madison County, KY. How's that for retirement? Love to all... -- Loren <kycollja@midusa.net> {:-)> HOKC *))))) TSG, USAF, Retired >From Iola, in the rolling hills of SE Kansas

    3. Hi Sandi, The "Maupin Look" as I describe it from aunts and uncles I did know; Dark blue rings around blue eyes, very dark (almost black) brown, curly hair and just generally very cute. I had blond, wavy hair (not curly) with cowlicks at the crown and bottom right neck line that have given me no end of problems. The blond turned to dishwater brown during my twenties. Do I sound jealous? YESSSSSS! Oh yes, the topper is she had an 18 and 1/2 inch waist. The smallest I ever got was 24 inches after dieting, exercing and weighing 102. She will be visiting the High Desert or Palm Beach and probably a sidetrip to Long Bearch where she lived for a time. Shall pass along your info. Though it pains me. 3. The Bryan County Heritage Association is a gem of a place right in the middle of a tiny town in Southeastern Oklahoma, Calera. It seems that a local woman was quite a genealogist, and when she died, donated at least a couple of hundred books. That collection was the start of their effort to provide a quality place for people to research. Since then, they spend every dime they get buying more---more census films, more books, more of everything. It is run entirely by volunteers in an old building adjoining the volunteer fire station. I joined right away, and every time I go in there I put a few dollars in their jar by the door. It is such a relief to be able to look at census microfilms that do not have scratches and use machines that are not worn out and hard to focus. Among other things, they have a set of volumes listing Union and Confederate Civil War Soldiers, Chickasaw and Choctaw files, many out of print books on various families, records from various southern states, and burial records from many funeral homes in Oklahoma dating back well into the early 1800's. 3. Susan, You have just opened a door that already has an answer in the mill. This is just the kind fo information William is looking for for the MAUPIN newsletter, he is starting this year. You might want to send him a copy DIRECTLY - just to make sure he doesn't miss it on the list. We need to be careful, before we fault anyone, as in many cases Dorothy was quoting - Exactly - the information found in Eugene Maupin's files. Sometimes we find some typos that crept in, but when you are using pencil and an OLD typewriter, those things happen. A few errors were caught shortly after the publication of the first edition and corrected in the second edition. The book now being published is simply a REPRINT of the second edition. NO - I repeat - NO - changes were made, NO - corrections were made - just more copies. 2. Loren J. Adams
    3. Sandi, I would love to come out. I started that way before Christmas, but as often happens... Consider some alternatives: At Fulton each year we have a Covered Dish lunch at the Senior Citizen/Community Center. For those that have come a distance they can furnish, Chips, Bread, Ice, Soda, KFC, etc. Locals usually furnish cassaroles, desserts, relish trays, etc. During the meeting we pass the hat (pot, can or other container) for donations to cover the $50 (or less) cost. Consider: last name A to E brings meat, F to J brings dessert, K to O brings veggi, etc. Consider: Depending on the day - Church hall, Leigon hall, etc. There is usually a small cost, but pass the hat donation would cover that. Consider: Outside is nice - especially in good weather. The kids can run free and us old folks... Inside is fine - if the weather is ugh. But you need to tame the kids a bit. However, you can bring a computer, scanner, printer, etc. If a park (plan A) is desired - then (plan B)look for a last minute cover in the general area. I'm a long way from there and am not familiar with your weather, except that it can quickly go to extremes. I would probably set up a base at Ojai and be there for a week or two. >From what I've heard last years FIRST was a pleasure for all that attended. As to finding cousins in the phone book - give them a call and invite them. A word of caution, as I found out the hard way, I was talking to a young man, about 10, whose name was Maupin and explained we were probabaly related. Along came his mother, a divorcee, and told me that she would rather not know any more about the family than she already did. Funny thing is, she worked for/with my brother.
