Dear Denise: I'm so sorry for your loss. But, I'm glad that you have so many fond memories of your cousin. Best, Sandi
Sandi--Thanks for posting the obituary of Charles Edward, my dad's first cousin. For anyone who was at the Charlottesville Maupin Reunion where a wreath was placed on the grave of Socrates in the UVA cemetery, Charles Edward was one of the wreath layers. He was a really nice guy and when I used to visit Okla City as a little girl, my uncle would take me over and Charles Edward would work his ham radio for me and talk to people all over the world. So sad to see so many of the great Maupins passing on. Denise

Dear Bettye: Amen to all you said. I still marvel at all Dorothy did without a computer! Her book, to me, is our Maupin Bible. Granted, we've all made corrections, which is so easy in email and on our Maupin History site on Myfamily.com. Jamie << [email protected] >> joined the list today and also left the list today. She sure didn't give the list members time to get to know. Well, she seems to be one of those who will take anything written down as the truth! There are many people who are researching their families who do just that. If people aren't willing to put out the effort through money and time for really doing research they will always have erroneous information. Unfortunately, they'll pass that around. Best, Sandi

I know I do! But we have modern technology that gives us better ways to check for errors, such as microfilm at the LDS, and better ways to communicate without the burden of stamps and phone calls. As for me, I always check the "source" before I bite. Dorothy felt there were some items that did not add up. She has spent the better part of her last few years "proving" what she felt needed clearing up. We also have to remember that once an error gets into print, it is nearly impossible to eradicate it or change it. Unfortunately one person will duplicate what another one wrote, w/o checking for proof. What anyone chooses to accept or not accept is a personal matter, but I feel Dorothy's book is well documented as far as the origin and surnames of our forebears in early history. She gleaned info from many sources and tried to prove everything possible before including it in her book. Can we say that about the books of "old?" Good Luck, Ellie

______ To me, the most interesting parts of "Dorothy's Book" are the first 100 pages or so describing her trips to France and the Netherlands plus the history of the country at that time. Her dedication to finding the truth was unbelievable! I'm sure there are errors in the following pages but that is inevitable. I found one such error and contacted her. Still, I think it is a book worth owning. I bought copies for my two daughters. I would even venture to say it is probably the best book on Maupin history available. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to part with $40 for such a jewel. Especially anyone truly interested in the Maupin history. To each his own - and I don't say that to rile anyone. Just my opinion. Bettye (Mrs. Max Gail) Maupin - Rolla MO P.S. Too, I think we must keep in mind that Dorothy is an elderly lady in poor health. It is no small effort for her to wrap, etc., and mail the books. We own her a great deal. ______________________ >In a message dated 1/1/2003 11:21:06 PM Eastern Standard Time, >[email protected] writes: > >> I'd like to see someone pull the errors out of all of the >> family history books, > >I think we all feel like that.. AMEN to that Ellie....I trust the docs that Dorothy published in her book. I know she tried to correct and validate all the info she put in there. There will always be "new" material that is discovered --- that is what happened between 1907 and when Dorothy wrote her book. I always use family histories as "sources" and try to obtain the original docs. Many censuses became available; individuals learned how to perform research and what to look for. We all have over the years . I have learned alot since 1974 and am still learning new techniques and finding new sources every day......and .....I am still "stuck in the mud" on several of my lineages. May never find them but I keep trying. That is the fun of it. Right. No doubt others has commented on the following info about Gabriel's wife. I have to remind our Maupinites (newbies and oldsters)that the following info about our Gabriel is in error. It took Dorothy many years and many dollars to "dispel" the story about Gabriel's wife being Marie Spencer. Her book gives proof that Gabriel's wife was MARIE HERSENT, not MARIE SPENCER. I'd like to see someone pull the errors out of all of the family history books, Not possible, even with new ones. Genealogy is never complete. There is alot of genealogy fraud going on this day and time you really have to watch those new books, and so easy to create documents that were seemed not to even exist during the time the original books were wrote.
