Here's my history of the Missouri Reunion: I attended my first Maupin Reunion in Columbia, MO on the 2nd Sunday in June, 1974 and I haven't missed one since. At that time, I was living in Columbia, and my Aunt, Frances Maupin, had read a notice that there was a Maupin Reunion held in Columbia, MO on the 2nd Sunday in June at Cosmo Park. My wife and I attended with our three month old son, Gabriel and my Aunt (who didn't drive). It was the coldest, windiest Sunday ever for June. The coffee cups were blowing about and everybody was concerned about our three month old son being out in such weather. It was decided then that we should move the Reunion indoors. Mildred and Clayton Maupin of Fulton recommended going to the Fulton Community Center. Thus we held it there for three or four years. In February 1978, I moved from Columbia to Fulton, and have lived in Fulton ever since. I also got elected as an officer, and have been either President or Vice-President ever since. During the early eighties there was another group competing with us for the Fulton Community Center on the 2nd Sunday in June. We held the Reunion at the VFW in Columbia for 2 or three years but they changed club managers and the new one didn't want to mess with our group. We then returned to Fulton and because of the availibilty or unavailibilty of the Community Center we bounced the day around from year to year. We held it on Fathers' Day (the 3rd Sunday) one year and attendance was poor that year. Lately, we haven't had any competition for the Community Center, thus the 1st or 2nd Sunday is usually available. We put it up for vote every year and let those in attendance decide which day to hold it on the next year. Regardless of when the Missouri Reunion is held, there will always be somebody who can't attend. As Abraham Lincoln once said: "You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all the people all of the time." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 2:23 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MAUPIN-L] RE: 2003 Reunions In a message dated 2/4/2003 8:04:48 AM Mountain Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > > I just want to clarify Loren Adams' response concerning the Fulton > > Reunion. Ellie, The rifle is kept in a bank vault for safety reasons. In short the rifle was presented to Daniel Maupin III by General George Washington and was one of six specially made for presentation. Daniel loaned/gave it to Mosias when he left Kentucky to go to Missouri. The rifle was on view at the Charlotville Reunion in 2000 and has been at several Fulton reunions. I have a picture and others are available, mine is not able to be sent by internet. Hi cousins, I have been attending the FULTON reunion since 1985. It has not always been on the first weekend because of problems scheduling the community center on the first weekend. In those cases usually the 2nd weekend was selected, but this sometimes conflicts with Fathers Day. Prior to my starting to attend the reunion it was held for several years in Columbia, Missouri. As far as I kno it has never been set in cement as to either time or plade and the question has been asked at every reunion I have attended. The community center is convienent, low cost, air conditioned, recently remodled and expanded, has a kitchen and is always clean and neat. We are also very lucky in that Dru Maupin, our current president, lives in Fulton. With the location opportunities are available at several courthouses, local libraries, the University of Missouri, the Missouri State Historical Society and many other facilities in Kansas City and Saint Louis, depending on your plans and legnth of stay. The usual attendance on Sunday is about 50 buthas been near 100 on occasion. The Saturday gathering has been as high as 30 or so by the time we called it quits for the night. There are a few, 10 t0 15, who appear at almost every meeting and gathering, but the fun is meeting those who are there for the first time or have been absent for a while. We know it is not the perfect meeting time for all. This is one reason it is encouraged that other reunions be held, like one held in California a few years ago. I think it is a GOOD idea to have some place to POST all that are planned and perhaps some of us can attend more than one, I love them... I read with interest that some family members can not attend the MO reunion because it is held the 1st w/e of June. So, with the reunion held the first w/e of June for the past several years, I was curious to find out when the reunion date was changed. I have Dorothy's newsletters from 1980. Prior to 1993, the MO reunion was generally held the 2nd w/e of June - several as late as the last w/e of June. In 1990 the date was moved to the "1st Sunday of June, rather than the second. It was the only time available", as quoted in the Christmas letter Dorothy sent out December 1989 In 1992 the reunion was held June 27th in Fulton; , 1993 on June 27th; 1994 on June 12th. The next couple were the 2nd w/e of June but held, ie., June 8 or June 9, June 10 etc. There has been discussion re the meeting date for the past 2 years. It apparently is not set in stone; each year, a Reunion officer can schedule the next year's date as quickly as possible to get the desirable date. This might again be a topic of discussion at the Reunion in June. These are just my observations. "Just stating the facts ma'am." cf ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 2:23 PM Subject: Re: [MAUPIN-L] RE: 2003 Reunions > In a message dated 2/4/2003 8:04:48 AM Mountain Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > > I just want to clarify Loren Adams' response concerning the Fulton > > > Reunion.
