Denise and everyone. I found a webpage about our cousin Ora Maupin. She was as "sharp as a tack" at the last White Hall Reunion. I am so sorry to learn of Ora Maupin's death. She was such a lady! She was at all of the reunions that I attended (about 4 or 5) and had been recorder of deeds (or something like that) for years in Charlottesville. When I spoke w/her at the last reunion, she was so sweet and told me to tell my UVA son to please visit at University Baptist Church, where she was a member. She is a real loss to our Maupin family and to Charlottesville. Denise Maupin Watson Alexandria, VA PS I hope someone lets Dorothy know.

Dear Cousins: Our cousin, Elijah Cope passed on today. I just heard from his wife, Lana, who was kind enough to pass on the news. We lost my brother-in-law Saturday so this is another shocking piece of news in our time of sorrow. Elijah is now with our dear Lord. We need to pray for Lana and the family to help them get through the sorrow of their great loss. If you wish to send cards the address is: Mrs. Lana Cope 4404 Estate Bloulevard #12 Indianapolis, IN 46221 Love, Cousin Sandi Carter
Thanks Loren for info about Fort Scott. I have some information on it, but would like alot more. By the way, my Silas T.G. Maupin also did fight in the Indian Wars in the New Mexico territory when he migrated there to homestead land in Farmington, NM in 1870s. Also info on my line (maybe I wasnt clear when I wrote it), but my John Maupin is the one who married Frances Dabney, he did not go to Kentucky (at least not that I know of from Dorothy's book page 140-141 (he lived in Hanover County and Albermale County dying there in1806). I descend through his son: Thomas Maupin (#22 on page 141) who married Judith Cobbs. See Thomas Maupin (page 180 in Dorothy's book): Children of Thomas Maupin (Albermarle Co/Cabell Co VA) there is Samuel J. (Jennings) who maried Elizabeth Gilmore, their second child (b) is my great great grandfather Silas G. (actually it is T.G. -Thomas Gilmore) Maupin marrying Martha Bukey...... I have all history down from that including a family Bible from 1865. Thanks again for your input. My great grandmother Josephine B. Maupin (daughter of Silas and Martha) was born in Girard, Kansas in 1865 and then left from there in 1875 with the family (I think, dont have my notes with me), in a conestoga wagon along the Santa Fe trail to homestead land in Farmington, New Mexico. (I have alot of stories of this adventure and their homesteading land, etc). Susan (in San Diego, CA)
Susan, When it comes to Civil War and the Maupins, William has a lot of information, but you really want to talk to Julian "Doc" Maupin. Not only does he have a lot of research, but a lot of stories and since your John went to Kentucky you could probably fill a book. A point of interest. Fort Scott was established in 1842 and was a training center and jumping off point for troops involved in the Mexican War of 1846. It was also about the center of the line of forts and military highway from Ft. Dodge Iowa to Ft. Smith Arkansas. A lot of History here. Lots of luck, Loren... > > From: [email protected] > Date: 2003/04/25 Fri PM 09:56:43 CDT > To: [email protected] > Subject: [MAUPIN-L] Williamsburg & Civil War Stuff > > Thanks all for info on what I can look for in Williamsburg when we go there > May 3-10th. Thanks all for info on what I can look for in Williamsburg when we go there May 3-10th. Am really looking forward to doing a big history thing both Revolutionary War and Civil War stuff too. Will take tons of pictures of the colonial houses there in Williamsburg and hope to eat/drink in one of the taverns too..... As far as Civil War history/stuff goes. I know that Maupins were Virginian's and probably alot of them fought in the Civil War for the South, so am interested in any history and musems there too concerning that. However, it is very interesting that my Silas Thomas Gilmore Maupin son of Samuel Jennings Maupin, son of Thomas Maupin, son of John Maupin (married Frances Dabney), son of Daniel Maupin, son of Gabriel Maupin, also fought in the Civil War (I have all of his Civil War records and pension records) but he fought for the North in a Kansas Calvary. He happened to be living near/at Fort Scott, Kansas at the time and I guess signed up then. Any other Maupin Civil War history that anyone would like to share about their anscestors would be welcome. Thanks all. Will report back when we return on May 11th. Susan (in San Diego)

Sherry, When I talked To William earlier this week, he was at his sister's. He had just returned from doing some research in Fredonia, KS and Miami, OK. As soon as he was free at his sister's he was planning to go to Madison Co., KY to work on some of the plans and details for the 2005 reunion there. As a result he was not planning to spend much time on the internet until after the Fulton, MO, reunion on June 1st. Let me do some brainstorming: The children of James R Maupin and Lucy Huckstep may have come of age and a share of his estate was given to them before he married the 2nd time. If there were no children of the 2nd marriage and the older children were already cared for, there would be no need to provide for anyone - except, the surviving wife. If her brother was younger he may have been named to insure that she would be cared for since there were NO younger children. Since you give bothe her maiden name and her brother as Mallory, she would not seem to be a - widow. It is possible that the Mallory named was the son of an earlier marriage - NOT a brother - check ages. Most genealogy programs provide means to identify 2nd marriages and that would be the only connection - without blood children. As to parents - each wife would have their own set - independent of the other - unless they were sisters - OR - related in some other way. Again - If the children were older they may have been provided for earlier. For proofs and/or documentations you probably need to check records for the transfer of land or slave ownership. Prior to 1863 slaves were handled just as the back 40 acres, except you could take a slave with you. I don't know if this will help much, but perhaps it may offer some ideas. Some time ago, William Albertson (William are you out there?) gave me the name of my gg-grandmother as Lucy A. Maupin who was married to my James R. Maupin. The name of her father was Gabriel Maupin and mother Lucy Huckstep. >From Dorothy's book, pg. 99, I also see that Gabriel was married 2nd to Lucy Mallory. I found Gabriel's will at Albemarle Co. Courthouse this past week, but, it names his second wife Lucy Ann and her brother who was a Mallory. Did not name any children in the will. So my question is, how do we tie my Lucy A. Maupin to Lucy Huckstep or might she have been the dau. of Lucy Mallory? Just interested in the documentation. Second question. Does anyone know if or how Lucy's parents can be documented. Are they Josiah Huckstep and Nancy Watts? At the Albemarle Courthouse, I found the will of a Josiah Huckstep, but, he names no wife or children. He just leaves everything to a brother and a friend, etc. not sounding like he was married. Hope someone on this line can help! Sherry Mason

Spring is Virginia at its finest, so a visit to Williamsburg will be a wonderful trip. The Taliaferro-Cole House was the Maupin home and Market Square Tavern on Duke of Gloucester St. was the home of Gabriel Maupin (2) who was also Keeper of the Magazine, which is next door, during the Revolutionary War. You can visit Chownings Tavern and view Market Square Tavern which is across the street. There are few original homes and buildings remaining in Williamsburg since most are replications, but both of these Maupin homes are among the few remaining originals. If your travels should take you to the Charlottesville, VA area, White Hall, another Maupin home, remains also with a Maupin Country Store still in operation. You will find it located on Virginia state maps near Earlysville, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is most unusual for this many 18th century homes from a family to be in existence and in such good repair, so don't forget your cameras! Rose Marie Martin Culpeper, VA 22701 [email protected]
