Cousins: I've had a lot of email about our move and want to answer it all here. Thanks for your blessings on our move. Actually, we just can't wait! We are so excited about getting up to Frazier Park and settling into our new home. I must tell you that the town is so small that there is not one traffic light! There are so few cars there. There are only a little over 2,000 people in Frazier Park. AND, they are all friendly people. When they do pass in a car they wave! WOW! What a wonderful change from the almost 150,000 people in Simi Valley and too many cars on our streets here. We prayed about this move and the Lord gave a "GO!" Our realtor here and the one up there are in contact and both have told us that they've never had a smoother sale and better sellers and buyers. We'll be spending a lot of time moving stuff up to our storage area between now and next Thursday, 8 May, when we'll be moving totally out of this house. Anyway, I hope not to be off the net for long. So, y'all keep up sharing genealogy and I'll miss the email. Love, Cousin Sandi

Hi family: Anyone who would like my new snail mail addy in Frazier Park, it's below. Sandi Carter P O Box 95 Frazier Park, CA 93225-0095 We'll be moved up there on 8 May. Love, Sandi
Thank you Loren, I spent my early married life living in Shawnee Mission KS, traveled back and forth to Cassville, Barry Co. and Diamond, Jasper Co. alot using Route 69 south. Going back to my home area. I lived in Pittsburg KS at one time and had a dentist in Girard, Ks. You brought to us, a good history of the forts and I thank you. As I'm sure a lot of us enjoyed. Again, thanks. Tamara Mitchell Rossford, OH
Susan, (and others) At your request - a bit more on Kansas and the Forts. This is kind of a "Readers Digest" version. The first set of Forts - built around 1840 - ran from Fort Dodge, Iowa to Fort Smith, Arkansas. At this time most of the future states, were not even territories. The primary purpose of the forts was to keep the "Red Man" West and the "White man" East. Fort Scott was originally built in what was the territory of Missouri. The major exception to this rule was the Osage Mission, located near present day Girard. The mission activities extended from there to Olathe on the North and Wichita on the West. There was a trail known as the "Military Highway" (basically US Highway-169) that was used to transport supplies, mail, etc. between the Forts. Both the Oregon and Santa Fe trails had origins at Westport (a waterfront area) on the Missouri at the west side of what is now Kansas City, MO. There was a branch of the SF trail that went West from Ft. Scott (Roughly US-54) and caught the main trail out about the junction of the Arkansas River As population put pressures on the government, the area became states and territories. After the Mexican War of 1846, most of the old Forts ceased to exist as such. However a new line of military forts were built, starting at Ft. Leavenworth: to protect the westward trails and expansion. Included were Ft. Riley, Ft. Hays and Ft. Dodge. Then came the "War of the Rebellion". During and after this were the conflicts with the native Americans. Two of the Forts, Riley and Leavenworth, still serve training and active duty purposes and participated in the most recent military activities in Iraq. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan Bain" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 8:11 PM Subject: Re: [MAUPIN-L] Maupin's & Fort Scott & Kansas
Dear Family: As you know, we'll soon be moving to Frazier Park, California, home of Rootsweb. We should be all moved in up there on 8 May. So, a cousin, not a Maupin, has graciously opted to sit this list for me until I get back on the net. If you have a change of email addy, please address it to Chery Travis. Her private email addy is: Cheryl [email protected] Love, Cousin Sandi
Sherry--That was a really good site. Thanks for posting it. I don't know how you always come up with such great things on the net. Denise

Gayle--Thanks for sharing about Ora. It's good to know that she seemed fine two weeks ago. She really made an impression on me; I have felt so sad since I read of her death. She had a nice obit the the C'ville paper, but I just logged on and found out that there's a news story about her, too. Like you said, she knew everybody, and everybody knew her. I believe she was such a credit to the Maupin name and maybe that's why she never married. I just know she's in a better place today w/all of her family around her. Her parents and all her siblings preceded her in death and they must be joyous in Heaven today. I hope your Aunt Tillie is in good health. Denise

She was the commissioner of Revenue, responsible for city and state business ...income and other tax matters. So, of course everybody in town knew her. She was a good friend of my Aunt Tillie, (Eloise Tilman Maupin- Copps) who just celebrated her 93rd birthday April 20th. She still lives in the house her parents built next door to my grandparents house and only has a housekeeper come in once a week. Ora called her two weeks ago and all was fine and they did their check in with each other. Ora had a heart condition and Aunt Tillie thinks that is what called her home. Of course, she never mentioned age since she's older than Ora by 5 months.
Susan, I descend from John Maupin and Frances Dabney through Perry MAUPIN and Rachel BRADLEY. I am also descended from Frederick COX and Hannah COBB. I was wondering if you could possibly share some of your stories with the rest of us? Joan Bain/Bell ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 28, 2003 2:57 PM Subject: [MAUPIN-L] Maupin's & Fort Scott & Kansas Thanks Loren for info about Fort Scott. I have some information on it, but would like alot more. By the way, my Silas T.G. Maupin also did fight in the Indian Wars in the New Mexico territory when he migrated there to homestead land in Farmington, NM in 1870s. Also info on my line (maybe I wasnt clear when I wrote it), but my John Maupin is the one who married Frances Dabney, he did not go to Kentucky (at least not that I know of from Dorothy's book page 140-141 (he lived in Hanover County and Albermale County dying there in1806). I descend through his son: Thomas Maupin (#22 on page 141) who married Judith Cobbs. See Thomas Maupin (page 180 in Dorothy's book): Children of Thomas Maupin (Albermarle Co/Cabell Co VA) there is Samuel J. (Jennings) who maried Elizabeth Gilmore, their second child (b) is my great great grandfather Silas G. (actually it is T.G. -Thomas Gilmore) Maupin marrying Martha Bukey...... I have all history down from that including a family Bible from 1865. Thanks again for your input. My great grandmother Josephine B. Maupin (daughter of Silas and Martha) was born in Girard, Kansas in 1865 and then left from there in 1875 with the family (I think, dont have my notes with me), in a conestoga wagon along the Santa Fe trail to homestead land in Farmington, New Mexico. (I have alot of stories of this adventure and their homesteading land, etc).
