I agree that the two Mattinglys, William and Leonard, are brothers to Helen Mattingly Braddock and all children of William C. Mattingly and Trecy Girten. And you are right about William C. Mattingly mentioning Girten land in his will signed in 1875: " I hereby appoint Robert A Spalding Executor of this my last will and also Trustee for my son Thomas & authorize him to sell my land & the coal privilege which I have under the Girtin land & to convey the title to the purchaser- Out of the notes now due me I want my debts paid which are few." But Ruth Heffington of Union County Historical Society says William C. Mattingly bought the land from James Girten. I have a few James Girten deeds where he, James Girten, also leased land to his son Charles in 1825 and mentions his son James and 3 daughters unnamed. Ruth Heffington also refers to a record mentioned in the District Court after the death of Charles Girten 1855: Girten vs Girten. She thinks it may have been a distribution of James Girten's lands/estate. However I have never been able to locate the record that she refers to. Ms. Heffington says the case may have been "kicked" up to the Circuit Court and the Circuit Court records have been removed to Frankfort for preservation or something and are unavailable. There it is again. No records.
