    3. In recent weeks I've seen a lot of food for thought. Here's another serving. I'm a great grandson of Rose Ann Burkey nee Mattingly, who was a great gramddaughter of Henry Mattingly who settled in western Allegany County MD in the 1700s. He in turn was a great grandson of Cezar. That makes me 11th generation. That's meant only as an introduction. Since I've been here in St. Louis, I've learned much to my surprise that a fellow priest stationed here with me (till recently) is also of Mattingly descent. He gave me 11 closely-typed and heavily annotated pages that had been given him which show a tree of many Missouri Mattingly's going back to one Barton or Bartholomew Mattingly who came to Perry County MO from Kentucky sometime in the early 1800s and died in Missouri in 1833 at the age of 57. Born in 1776, he married two women named Cabron and died on 30 July 1833 -- I would presume at Perryville. These papers (source as yet unknown to me) claim that Barton was the son of Luke Mattingly who married Eleanore Thompson at St. Inigo's Parish in St. Mary's County, Maryland, on 11 Feb. 1772. "Sometime between 1790 and 1800 Luke Mattingly acquired a Spanish land grant for a track of land just north of Brewer (MO) but never settled it, instead assigned the ground to Clement Hayden and presumably returned to Kentucky." 1790-1800, of course, is before the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I am firmly convinced that these people are our relatives. But it is more a moral certitude than an unimpeachable one. From Barton forward the notes seem be very firm, although incomplete. Going backwards, however, I wish there was more precision, which might indicate a more solid knowledge. "Sometime" and "presumably" makes me wonder who was doing the presuming and when and on what authority. Maybe some of you have already chewed on this or would liketo do so. Fr. Blaine Burkey, O.F.M.Cap., born Cumberland MD, 30 Nov. 1935 (ordained a priest 1961)

    3. Hi Fr. Burkey ! Your posting is extremely interesting. I'd love to chew it over with you and would find the 11 pages of the descendants of Barton Mattingly etc. you have in your posession of GREAT interest since I do have a record of Luke Mattingly who married Eleanor Thompson Feb 11 1772 at St. Francis Xavier, St, Mary's County, Maryland. 3. I'm still chewing on the documents etc. that Judith sent me, but in the meantime I'd like to throw in something else I've discovered in Msgr. Mattingly's second book, re the Mattingly's in early America. On p. 228 he cites Fr. Walton's diary on the wedding of Luke Mattingly and Eleanor Thompson on 11 Feb. 1772 and adds "related in the second degree." This is significant and may be helpful at some point . It is canonical legalese for "first cousins." It would mean that, if Luke was the son of John Mattingly and Grace Brewer, then Eleanor's mother was either a Mattingly or a Brewer. This of course presuming that this was Eleanor's first marriage. If it were a second marriage, then either he father or her mother was a Mattingly or a Brewer. Nothing is ever completely simple in the Mattingly morass, is it? Thought I'd share that before sleep erases it from my consciousness. Fr. Blaine
