I have had conflicting thought about Raphael as a son of Basil and Mary B. According to the 1850 census Raphael was 14 years old giving a birthdate of about 1836. Basil died in 1833. I believe one of Basil's daughters, Mahala, married Washington Mattingly and tend to think Raphael was Mahala's child and a grandchild of Basil's. Still haven't found any concrete proof however. Mahala died (according to most researchers during 1835 but I don't think this is accurate as she had a daughter, Melvina in 1839 (married Thomas Russell in 1858)) and during 1850, Raphael Mattingly was living with Joseph B. and Mary Jane Spalding. Mary Jane was a sister of Mahala's. I'm still looking for Melvina on the 1850 census but have had no luck in finding her. I've seen some reports that state Mahala actually married a Dennis Mudd but I'm not sure I can come to terms with this. On 6-8-1858, a Mrs. Ann Mudd, daughter of Basil died. I suspect, but can't really prove, that this was Nancy Ann who was married to Andrew Jackson Mudd, per most sources. The 1850 census merely shows him as A. J. with a wife named Ann. Their marriage records name him as Dennis Mudd. Obviously there's a bit of confusion with some of the marriages of Basil's off-spring. I just love this stuff!
