    1. [MATTINGLY] James Mattingly about 1796
    2. William R Mattingly
    3. Does anyone want to tackle a tough one? James Mattingly apparently arrives in Hempstead County, Arkansas during the 1820's as he appears on the 1840 census there with himself between 40 and 50 years of age; three sons between 15 and 20; and one male under age 10. His wife is between 30 and 40 and he has females - one 20 to 30; two 15 to 20; two between 10 and 15; and two between 5 and 10. By 1850 his wife is apparently deceased; James is shown as 54, Bradford 26; Valenia 23; Mary 21; Harriett 18; and George E. age 12. All but James were born in Arkansas (James was born in Kentucky) suggesting James was in Arkansas at least as early as 1824 but probably earlier. Mary A. Mattingly married John L. Reed on 7-25-1850 in Lafayette County, Arkansas. This appears to be the same Mary who was in the home of James during the census. On 2-15-1854 James aged 58, marries Louissa Harrison aged 18 (Wow!). The 1860 census of Sevier County, Arkansas shows a Velasy A. Mattingly, aged 35 (this appears to be Valenia). Also on that same 1860 census Bradford Mattingly is married to a Delilah, both aged 37 with no children. This is the last time I see Bradford (so far) but an Asa Mattingly served in Company "C" 1st Arkansas Battalion of the Union Army. On 5-26-1878, his widow, named as Delilah Brown, applies for his pension (Delilah's new husband was a witness on the application). I suspect this James, born about 1796 in Kentucky, was a son of John Baptist Mattingly who died in 1817. I also suspect Asa and Bradford Mattingly were one and the same. Does anyone have any thoughts or additional info or insight into this family line? I'm looking for evidence to support or destroy my suspicions.
